Effie was taking advantage of the warm weather, and sitting out on the porch of the house with her pillow on her lap. Her feet were tucked up on a stool, as she still had lingering nerves about whatever those metal skittering things had been returning, and she was certain those had been responsible for the damage to her threads. Such a little thing, in appearance, but so much to her. The box of threads was at her side, another box of bobbins next to it, and she was trying to wind pairs to start the next pattern.

Trying. The thread came to an abrupt end again, and she swore fervently, very Glaswegian and thoroughly unladylike, before glancing up and blushing hard, eyes widening as she caught sight of the person passing on the street. "Oh, I'm that sorry, ye'll forgive me, please, for saying such?"

"Oh, ye didna," Effie assured her. "Truly. Only I know 'tis soon, and...I havena family nearby."

Very soon, and she didn't like the thought of people gossiping about how soon, and even if her family was close, then, well, she wasn't sure how much help Catherine would be. After all, Catherine hadn't children of her own yet.

"Oh." Hattie finally realised why Effie was upset. "I'm sure no-one who knows you would think badly of you!"

"There isna a great many folk who do know me," Effie pointed out. "I dinna mean to upset ye, Hattie, for truth."

Hattie smiled ruefully. "I'm only upset because I upset you! I'm sorry, Effie. Though actually, I think a fair few folk know you through your trade, even if not personally. They won't think badly of you, I'm sure!"

"I dinna think they'd dare," she said, with perfect honesty. "Jonathan wouldna let them."

"Of course he wouldn't!" Hattie declared loyally. She patted Effie's hand. "You'll be fine."

Effie nodded, and looked down at Hattie's hand, biting her lip. "I'm frit, Hattie," she confessed.

Instantly, Hattie was all protective and motherly. "Frightened?" she cried. "Oh, Effie - what of?"

Oh, stars, where to even start. "Tis so much. So much than can go astray, and then...hae ye seen a birthing?"

"No, I haven't, I'm afraid. I know there are things that can go wrong, but... Effie, Mr Ibis will look after you! And the doctor too!"

"I have," she said, a little blankly. "I didna grow up with wealth, and there was always some woman in the tenements..."

Hattie winced very faintly. "I'm afraid my childhood was rather different. We were much further from our neighbours and I've never been close to anyone who was having a baby." She squeezed Effie's hand. "Was it... Was it often bad?"

"Twas very loud," she confessed, gripping Hattie's hand firmly. "We had...there was a family to each tenement, and lucky if we had two rooms. Everyone knew each other."

Whether they liked it or not. "Tis much quieter here."

"Goodness," Hattie said, rather blankly. "It must have been a godsend for you, being invited to LeChance!"

"I didna come direct," she explained. "My sister was matched, and we pooled our savings... lace sells better here than at home, and there was a dressmaker I'd had business with in Boston."

Effie shook her hand, hands folded together in her lap. "Catherine is still in Glasgow, wi' John James. Are your family still in..." she paused, frowning, trying to remember, "Hertfordshire?"

"Yes, apart from Electra who moved away when she married. Oh, what a shame that none of your family will be able to be with you for the birth of your child!"

"Yes, I don't suppose it's practical, really," Hattie agreed sympathetically. "That's the downside to having moved here, I suppose. We will all have to rely on our friends rather than our family - well, and our spouses, of course!"

Effie smiled softly, hand unconsciously smoothing her skirts over the faint curve of her belly. "I dinna think Jonathan would be wanting to see me that way."

She blushed dark. "I shouldna' hae raised the matter."
