Effie was taking advantage of the warm weather, and sitting out on the porch of the house with her pillow on her lap. Her feet were tucked up on a stool, as she still had lingering nerves about whatever those metal skittering things had been returning, and she was certain those had been responsible for the damage to her threads. Such a little thing, in appearance, but so much to her. The box of threads was at her side, another box of bobbins next to it, and she was trying to wind pairs to start the next pattern.

Trying. The thread came to an abrupt end again, and she swore fervently, very Glaswegian and thoroughly unladylike, before glancing up and blushing hard, eyes widening as she caught sight of the person passing on the street. "Oh, I'm that sorry, ye'll forgive me, please, for saying such?"

"I don't know. I suppose we'd have to ask someone who's been here a bit longer, or came from not so far away. I'm afraid plants aren't really something I know much about. It's a little worrying, though, isn't it?"

Effie bit her lip, and shook her head. "I dinna know enough about the place, I spery I should hae asked more but it was such a chance, I couldna refuse it." And didn't regret that she'd accepted, even with the oddness going on, since Lechance had brought her a husband, a home and, god willing, a child.

"Yes, I think that's the same for all of us," Hattie admitted. "I'm glad I came, though. I'd never had met Delphina if I hadn't - and all my other friends here, like you!"

"And I wouldnae hae Jonathan," Effie agreed softly. "Tis worlds away."

Hattie smiled fondly. "I'm so glad you're happy with him. He seems just right for you."

"He's wonderful," she said, without hesitation. "Absolutely grand." She paused, laying down her bobbins. "Hattie, can I tell ye a thing?"

"Of course you can!" Hattie assured her, laying a hand on Effie's.

Effie smiled, and turned her hand to take hold of Hattie's. "We're to have a bairn," she confided softly. "In the summer, I'm thinking, though the doctor hasnae yet confirmed it."

Hattie's eyes widened to huge circles. "Really? Truly? Oh, Effie! That's wonderful!"

"Truly," Effie confirmed, laughing and blushing. First she'd told anyone, and it just made it more real. "We were going to wait but, well. Seems tis easier to than not to, and Jonathan is so happy."

"I'm sure he is! Congratulations to you both! Oh, goodness! This is such exciting news! In the summer, you say?"

"Aye." Effie nodded, biting her lip on the smile that she simply couldn't control. "I wasnae sure but tis two months now and that means July or August, I'm thinking?"

Hattie did some rapid calculations. "Goodness, you two certainly didn't waste any time, did you?" She squeezed Effie's hand. "Is there anything I can do? You will let me know if there is, won't you?"

Effie blushed dark red at Hattie's comments about time, and rested her free hand on the bobbins, rolling the beads of the spangles nervously. "Tis God's will on the timing, I'm thinking, not ours." Though she'd certainly found great happiness in Jonathan's bed and arms... "Tis nature's way, that bairns often follow on the bedding." At least, between a man and a woman, from all she'd seen growing up, married or not.

"Oh, please don't be embarrassed!" Hattie begged. "I'm sorry, I spoke without thinking. It was not - it wasn't meant to be a criticism. I think it's wonderful! And you will be such fantastic parents."

"Tis no' a thing we can be choosing the timing of," Effie said softly. Save for abstaining and, oh, she was not wanting that. "No' matter what the contract might be saying."

"Oh, ye didna," Effie assured her. "Truly. Only I know 'tis soon, and...I havena family nearby."

Very soon, and she didn't like the thought of people gossiping about how soon, and even if her family was close, then, well, she wasn't sure how much help Catherine would be. After all, Catherine hadn't children of her own yet.

"Oh." Hattie finally realised why Effie was upset. "I'm sure no-one who knows you would think badly of you!"

Hattie smiled ruefully. "I'm only upset because I upset you! I'm sorry, Effie. Though actually, I think a fair few folk know you through your trade, even if not personally. They won't think badly of you, I'm sure!"

Instantly, Hattie was all protective and motherly. "Frightened?" she cried. "Oh, Effie - what of?"
