Effie was taking advantage of the warm weather, and sitting out on the porch of the house with her pillow on her lap. Her feet were tucked up on a stool, as she still had lingering nerves about whatever those metal skittering things had been returning, and she was certain those had been responsible for the damage to her threads. Such a little thing, in appearance, but so much to her. The box of threads was at her side, another box of bobbins next to it, and she was trying to wind pairs to start the next pattern.

Trying. The thread came to an abrupt end again, and she swore fervently, very Glaswegian and thoroughly unladylike, before glancing up and blushing hard, eyes widening as she caught sight of the person passing on the street. "Oh, I'm that sorry, ye'll forgive me, please, for saying such?"

"I don't think I've met Mr Warren," Hattie realised. "And I know who the tailor is but I've never really talked to him. I..." She grinned. "I suppose I've been a little preoccupied with someone else lately!"

"Mr. Warren is new to town," she told Hattie. "No' so new he's not wed, already, and to the doctor."

She smiled, recalling that she really did need to make time to see the doctor, but when she felt so well, she didn't feel the need for it. "I'm thinking the preoccupation's a fair common one."

"Well, I think I should have them all round so I can meet them properly!" Hattie said enthusiastically, already starting to think about which cakes to bake and how many seats she'd need and whether she had enough crockery, and when would be the best time for such a party...

"Perhaps a Saturday afternoon, do you think? So many of the Beloveds are at work during the week, even if I'm not."

She nodded. "Oh, aye, a Saturday sounds grand. And with most folk not working, they should be free. Would ye be thinking of inviting the Ascendants of those who've wed?"

"Oh no - that would have to be a full-blown dinner party! No, I was thinking Beloveds-only. So we can sit and gossip and catch up on the news and not have to guard our tongues," she said wickedly.

Effie laughed. "Oh, I dinna guard my tongue with Jonathan, and ye just heard how much I was guarding my tongue this morning, though I'm thinking I'd be more careful around others, aye. Could be the end of the month would be enough notice?"

"Yes, I think so. I'll send out invitations! And I was only joking, really, about guarding our tongues. I just meant, it's a different sort of atmosphere when it's just Beloveds than when there are Ascendants there too."

"Oh, aye, that it is." Effie nodded. "Can I be helping with the invitations? Or plans?"

"Oh, goodness, no! The invitations won't be a lot of work, and planning what to feed people is something I enjoy too much to want to share!" She grinned. "Though you could perhaps help me make a list of people to invite."

"Of course!" Effie agreed. "Did ye wish to be inviting every one at the hotel?"

"Er... I don't know if I'd have room for that many people!" Hattie admitted. "Our house isn't enormous. I think perhaps just the people I know, or my friends know. You know, so I could invite Mr... Warren, was it? And the tailor - oh, Nordstrom, that's his name! And Sadie, and you, and Missy and Ben, and - er - Mr Belgrave and Mr Rickard... Oh, who else is there?"

"Oh, yes! That would be where I'd heard his name, then - when the Banns were called. Well, he should certainly be invited, then! Who else? Oh, well, I'll just put on the invitation that anyone can bring a friend, that'll solve the problem of anyone I forget or don't know!"

"Mmmm." Hattie thought a moment. "Well, maybe I'll just ask people to let me know if they're bringing someone, to make sure they can all fit in our house!"

"Usually I'd say tis something to look forward to in the winter dark, but, well." Effie gestured at the brightness of the day, and hitched off the thread, picking up another bobbin. "Tis not like home, nor like Boston. I canna tell if tis ever cold here."

"Well, there are still more hours of darkness, aren't there?" Hattie said reasonably. "But yes. It's certainly a lot better for the spirits here, with so much warmth and sunshine!"

Hattie screwed up her face. "I don't think it does rain so much here, though, does it? Isn't that why there's all that desert out to the east?"

"If it doesnae rain, though, how will the crops grow?" A Scots lass was very familiar with the relationship between Glasgow's plentiful rainfall and cheap goods at market.

"I don't know. I suppose we'd have to ask someone who's been here a bit longer, or came from not so far away. I'm afraid plants aren't really something I know much about. It's a little worrying, though, isn't it?"
