RP: Ron & Peter
Who: Ron & Peter
When: 11 April, after lunch
Where: Outside the Great Hall
What: Awkward conversation

Things were slowly getting back to normal, or at least as normal as they'd been before the castle fucked with their minds, but there was still a lot to deal with. Ron hadn't had to reach out to Jamie, as he'd let Hermione Obliviate him, but Ron knew that something fundamental had been damaged in any relationship he might have had with his nephew. He was going to have to figure out how to at least mitigate that damage, but he wasn't sure exactly how to go about it. It was something he was going to have to actually sit down and think about.

He also needed to track Duke down, take a look at the club and make sure the security was adequate. He trusted the castle to an extent, at least with regards to keeping anyone from unauthorized Apparation into the castle, but there were still precautions that needed to be put into place if the boathouse was going to be used as a club. So, that was on his list among a dozen other little things. Not as many as Hermione and Harry had on their lists, but enough to keep him and his little department busy.

Thinking about Duke brought up the other announcement that had been made. The memorial for Cassandra. It was something he'd given thought to while he'd had Peter's memories, but at the time he'd figured no one else cared and hadn't done anything about it. Now, he wondered if he should have but maybe it was for the best that he hadn't. This way, they could all pay their respects to her as themselves, and not as someone else.

And speaking of Peter...Ron had been avoiding him to an extent since they'd regained their memories. Not necessarily on purpose, but not not-on purpose either. That couldn't go on forever, so when he spotted the other man leaving the Great Hall on his own, he decided to catch up to him.

"Hey, Peter. Mind some company for a bit?"

"Not at the moment. Roxanne and I are going for a fly later, but at the moment I've got nothing else on," Ron said, settling into step beside Peter. "And, I wanted to check-in. I'm not going to ask how you are, because well, I sort of know how you are. Just...if you need to talk, I'm here."

Ron was not good with talking about this sort of thing, and it was very awkward with Peter in particular for a number of reasons. Having the man's memories was only the most recent. "It's good, that we're going to have a memorial for Cassandra."

"No, you don't," Peter said, with a chuckle. "Just because you had my memories, it doesn't mean that you actually know, the same way I don't know what Padma is going through at the moment. We have ideas, conclusions based on the memories and who we are, but not who the other person is, and thank Merlin for that. I'd be terrible if we became photocopies of each other."

He put his journals and hands in his pockets and looked at Ron as they walked. "Are you rushing to talk to the person that had your memories?" he asked, although from observations people seemed to avoid the ones who did have their memories.

Peter nodded. "It is. She deserves to be remembered by the real people and not whoever happened to have the right memories. but in the end memorials are for the survivors. I remember Mum going to my father's grave every year on the anniversary of his death. We honor the dead, she'd say, but really it just made her feel better."

"Okay, fair point," Ron said, and it was. He may have had Peter's memories, but he wasn't Peter anymore than Jamie was him or Peter was Padma. "And no, I'm not rushing but that's for a lot of reasons. I can leave you alone if you'd rather." He wouldn't blame Peter if he didn't want to talk; he certainly was in rush to deal with the Jamie situation. "It's good to be ourselves again, isn't it?"

Ron nodded in agreement. "That's what I was thinking earlier. It was something I'd thought about but I'm glad we're doing it now instead of then. It's the right thing, for her memory and for those who knew her." Ron hadn't known her well, but they were a small community, and her loss--along with the losses of Teddy, Glenda, and Cho--would be felt for a long time.

"Yeah? Care to share those reasons?" Peter asked with a grin, before shrugging. "I think that in the end we're all avoiding each other for the same reasons. We all keep secrets, even from our best friends, and I don't mean the sort that gets you killed like in the war. No one wants to show who we truly are and now there's one person that has a pretty good idea, without really knowing. It's- disconcerting." He nodded. "It is, even if it'll take some time to forget what we know."

Peter was grateful that things happened, because he would have been upset if he hadn't had the chance to say goodby properly. "It is."

"They're complicated, and no. Not particularly. Sorry." He returned the grin because he wasn't particularly sorry about not wanting to spill his feelings to Peter and it seemed like Peter understood that. "Yeah. That's it exactly." Peter had put it better than Ron could have, but that really was an accurate read on the situation. "I think we will forget eventually, or at least kind of. There's no room for two sets of memories in one person's brain, and sooner or later the other person's memories will fade. Right now it's still fresh."

Ron knew there was a lot more he should, or could, say, but he'd never been good at that. It was why he loved Harry and Hermione so much. They could have this sort of conversation without saying much of anything at all. It was perfect.

"You going to be okay? We can, uh, still do the greenhouse if you want to. I know we don't need it anymore, but that might change in the future."

"Sweet Merlin, and here I thought you were about to tell me your deepest and darkest secrets. I guess this isn't the beginning of a beautiful friendship," he teased. "I agree in part, because these memories are never like the real thing. Sure we have these facts, but they don't come with the emotions that made those memories stand out. People tend to remember things that mean something, but without that connection-" He shrugged. "The part I disagree with is the room. People forget their own stuff. It's not like we remember every class or every assignment we did. It's not a matter of room as much as they mean little even if they happened to us."

He nodded. "Yeah, I will. I've been talking to Remus and Sirius again. I sent a message to James." Peter chuckled. "We really don't. I don't think any of us has any idea of what to do with the land. She was talking about rotating crops and this and that. We'd have no clue. Besides, I think we have better things to worry about."

He decided that maybe there was something Ron could do for him. "I never had the chance to get into the Ministry, not enough connections or name recognition, but I was good at strange magic and obscure potions. I want to see if Padma wants to work with me in trying to understand the castle's magic. Maybe we can't stop it, but maybe we can predict it, find ways to limit the damage. We can't just wait for the next thing to happen, or the next person to arrive or to be sent back. What if it's Voldemort that arrives next. We need to do something, and while I get that studying time magic is useless since we can't go back, studying a way to understand the castle's magic might become vital. You want to do something? If you agree, then talk to Harry and let us study it."

"Honestly? I've had enough of people knowing my deepest and darkest secrets. I think everyone has. As you said, people keep those secrets for a reason." Ron thought about it, then nodded. "That's pretty much what I meant about having the room, you just phrased it better." Which wasn't a surprise. Ron had never been very good with words. "Until then, I guess we just have to deal with what's in our heads. I suggest firewhiskey."

Ron did smile at that. "That's really good. I hope it works out for you." He didn't have to remind himself this time that this Peter was a different Peter than he'd known than the man who had betrayed Harry's parents, hidden like a rat for thirteen years, then aided Voldemort's return. It was becoming easier to keep the different versions of people separate. "Yeah, I've got no idea about that, so maybe it's for the best since I don't think anyone else does either." His mum might have, but not on a large scale.

"Actually, that's an interesting idea. I think we've all given up on the idea of going back, but we do need to know how and why people are coming here. We're working on a way to be alerted to new arrivals, but predicting and understanding it is beyond my abilities. If you think you and Padma might be able to do that, I'll talk to Harry." He didn't think it would take much convincing. "I don't know if useless is the right word. We need to be prepared if the castle brings back someone like Voldemort or Bellatrix. We got lucky with Greyback, and luck doesn't hold out."

"Not a speaker, are you?" Peter asked with a grin. If there was one thing that the Marauders could do, it was talk. They even had a map that talked and they had talked their way out of detentions plenty of time. "It's a little too early for firewhiskey, but I'll consider it for later."

He hoped so too, but he was taking it one person at a time. "Thank you. We'll see how it goes." Peter had surmised so. "It'd be a waste of time. On the other hand, we do have the spells now so if we need to build something, we can do it easily."

Peter certainly hoped that they had. "And why they are sent back. And why and how the castle can change our memories." Something in there piqued his curiosity. "How exactly are you thinking of being alerted? We were thinking about the map, but if you have any other ideas- It won't be the perfect solution, but it would be the first step, the easiest one." He was glad that Ron agreed with him. Maybe this would be easier than he had expected. "I've sent a message to Padma as well and see if she's interested. I'll let you know."
