"Is it something with famous dads," Jamie asked, "that they suck at emotionally supporting their kids? Scorpius' dad being the exception. Mr. Malfoy always seemed like his world lit up when Scorpius was around." Maybe Harry dating Draco Malfoy would be a good thing. He could learn a few things from him. Shifting, he put a companionable arm around her shoulders. "I'm sorry he said that to you."

Sighing, he squeezed her shoulders briefly before dropping his arm. "I stopped telling my Dad how I feel a long time ago when all I got in return was another lecture on doing the right thing or being grateful I didn't have to go through what he did at my age." He huffed softly. Much as he hated it, he knew he was a lot like his father. He tried not to be. But, he wasn't always successful. "I'm that bad at this, huh?" It was a rhetorical question, of course. He knew he closed himself off, kept people at a distance. It made sense, from a safety and privacy point of view in the public eye. But, it had also been the reason they broke up four years ago, the reason he never got serious with anyone.

"Thanks for being a friend, Savannah." Especially with their history, he knew a lot of people wouldn't give him the time of day in her position, Potter heir or not.

"Nah, it's just something with dads," she said, laughing. "Men aren't the best when it comes with emotions and maybe he's that rare unicorn who actually knows how to deal with what he feels. There are some exceptions to the rule." She sighed. "He wouldn't be my dad otherwise, but thank you. It's... well, better than making sure he's still breathing while naked and smelling of sex. My family is way weirder than yours."

Savannah didn't need to be told that one. "Jamie, you stopped telling anyone how you feel a long time ago and I'm not surprised considering that his view on life is: suck it up and move forward. You've learned that lesson really well. It was one of the things that drove me bonkers when we were together. You were polite and considerate, but it was cold, more like you were playing a role. I would have preferred seeing the ugly side of James Sirius Potter, because that would have been real." She chuckled. "Love, you're as bad as he is, but I can't see him taking the first step, not when he feels he's in a middle of some new war and I'm not telling you this because I want him to be happy, but because you will never be at peace until you come to some kind of acceptance."

She nodded. "Of course. You always meant a lot to me, and I want you happy, even if we aren't meant to be happy together."

Jamie laughed. "And we're back to the failings of all men," he teased. There was something different in the way Malfoy interacted with Scorpius, though, so maybe she was on to something. Merlin knew none of the men in his family were any good with emotions. "You might have me on that one. I can honestly say I've never had to deal with naked, post-sex Dad."

Jamie worried he'd learned a lot of lessons from his father well. Sorting out his baggage from what he'd picked up of his father's was going to be an even weirder task than trying to find a relationship with Harry. The ugly side of James Sirius Potter? Would he even realize that side himself if he saw it? He'd spent so much time building the Golden Boy to distract the world from the mess that was their Saviour. "First steps, huh? Well, I guess I am the Gryffindor," he said, echoing Harry's words from that first night. Suck it up and move forward might have to apply to learning to deal with the emotions connected to his dad, too.

Deciding they'd talked about his issues with his dad long enough, he flashed her a mischievous grin.

"Right. Enough maudlin thoughts for now." Dipping down and using a quiet charm to steady her before she could get her own balance, he picked Savannah up to swing her up onto his shoulders. "We have a win to celebrate and brag about, I hear."
