"You know, none of the stories painted you as a prat, Black." If Jamie could stop grinning, his words might have come out more serious.

Still, the image of the past that was being painted for him seemed very...well, grim. And there were probably other points he should address first, but the bit about Sirius had Jamie frowning in a second. "Wait. Why would you want to hex each other? I mean, okay, I get holding grudges, even if I don't hold them about school quidditch games. But, not against my brother. I'd be the first to hex someone into oblivion for going after Al or Lilu." Was that why Dad had never talked about Regulus? Some sort of grudge and he was on Sirius' side?

Sighing, he shook his head. "You may be right about the traits. Although, my Uncles Bill and Percy could sound like Ravenclaws, too, and they were both Gryffindors. Society changed after the war. The most prominent families weren't primarily from the old families that mostly fed into Slytherin. They were still there. But, my Dad, his friends, their families, they were running the country. They determined the things that were important in society." Whether they could see it or not. "But, they weren't Slytherin, they didn't do things because of tradition but because they were trying to change the world. So, we grew up with different outlooks."

"I didn't know there were stories about me," Regulus said very seriously. He knew what Ron had told him, but he didn't think that was for public consumption.

Regulus thought that it was a joke for a moment, but apparently not. "How much time do you have? Because explaining might require a long time, but my brother and I have barely spoken since he sorted in Gryffindor and certainly not once he left the house. He adopted your father and that was the end of it. Now- well, he insists on not calling me by my name, so I hex him for that, but should he start, I'm sure there are nine years worth of reasons to hex him, and none of them have anything to do with Quidditch."

He shrugged. "I cannot comment since I don't know them, but there were plenty of Weasleys even in my time. They were Gryffindors, even when they were smart." He snorted. "Oh yes, and what a smashing job they have done, killing everyone. Maybe they should have listened to those old families and then this wouldn't be happening. On the other hand, I wouldn't have the pleasure to remind my brother that his side committed genocide. Your aunt makes Bella look like an amateur."

"My dad would talk about you sometimes when I was a kid," Jamie explained with a tiny shrug. "You were one of the Slytherins, like Professor Snape, that he would use as an example of why Al shouldn't be afraid of ending up in Slytherin." At least before drink and paranoia had caused him to backslide. And how much of that had been about Draco Malfoy, Jamie wondered now. "Sometimes he'd bring you up when he was telling us about Sirius, the brave younger brother Sirius had lost in the first war."

Shrugging again, Jamie smiled sadly. "How much time do you need?" There were a lot of names and titles Jamie had been given by dint of being Harry Potter's kid. But, the title of 'older brother' was the one he considered sacred. "Dad's stories generally skipped the part where there was...bad blood?...between you two. But, if being sorted into different houses was the start of the problems, then, yes, we have very different ideas about what those houses and their traits mean. Al is my brother and no decision from a stupid hat is going to make me turn on him. There's no one I'd rather have at my back. Although, as an older brother, I can say that we tend to tease our siblings out of affection. Stupid, yes. But, we wouldn't do it if we didn't care."

Jamie chuckled. "Fair enough. Uncle Bill was a cursebreaker for Gringotts, same as me. So, definitely some Gryffindor traits there," he admitted. His uncle had really been the man Jamie looked up to when he needed an example of how to be a big brother, or when he'd stopped being able to look up to his own father. "Uncle Percy's just dead brilliant. More like Al." He couldn't help rolling his eyes. "It wasn't just the older families that disagreed with the experiments, you know. And a lot of those older families were also the ones pushing for the Ministry to do something about the low population growth, a large part of which was caused by your generation trying to wipe each other of the face of the earth during two wars. Yes, Aunt Hermione was the Minister and, unfortunately, she signed off on the experiments the Department of Mysteries wanted to run. But, she was also under a lot of pressure from the old men in the Wizengamot to do something or they would. The experiments were a terrible idea. Laws that would have forced marriages and births of unwanted children were just as bad. The only good option was to do nothing yet and try to find another solution and no one was opting for that on any side except for my generation who would have been the ones to have to live with what both your generation and theirs fucked up."

"Your father has no idea who I am or what my relationship with my brother was like, so I'm not sure what he could really tell you that it was true," Regulus said, a little annoyed that Potter would use him as an example of anything. "I'm also sure that my brother didn't really care that I was dead. Good riddance was probably the words running through his mind."

Potter sounded like he didn't believe the time required. "Years possibly, but then I'd be giving you the brief version," he said with his own smile. "Once again, your brother had absolutely no idea. I died at eighteen and my brother was in Azkaban. Your father, like every Gryffindor, thinks he's the owner of the truth, because anything that doesn't fit his view of the world is a lie." He knew for sure that houses didn't mean anything for these people. "Blacks are Slytherins. My brother decided that he wouldn't be, because he didn't want to be a Black. Then proceeded to spend his first holidays how great his new family was. Sirius relinquished any ties to my family back then, but used the name to his advantage. By the time I was sorted, it was either his new family or my family. I picked mine since I despised his and his conduct, and the feeling was mutual. We drew the line at hurting each other, but that's as far as it went." He didn't find the teasing a sign of affection either. "My name means something. If he can't respect that, especially considering that he kept his despite turning his back on all of us, then he's lucky that I'm not hexing him with anything lethal."

Regulus knew that life was never black and white and Potter's analysis was still an oversimplification, because nothing was ever simple in life but he still smiled. "Yes, but this is Sirius. Life is black or white for him, which means his side was in charge and they caused a genocide. If you don't drive the point home, then he'll blame the old families, because someone has to be the villain and it has to be the side is not on, which is why I remind him that it was indeed his side any time I can. Give him a week or two without anyone reminding him and every pureblood conspired to kill all muggleborns and that's how this came about. Who cares if it's true? As long as the 'truth' fits his vision of life, then it must be true. As you can see my brother isn't very different from your father."

Jamie thought the Black brothers' relationship sounded as joyful as his with his father. But, even his father had cared that Jamie died. "If that's true, then it sucks. Dad was never big on details. Probably, as you say, because he didn't know them." Or had drunk away whatever memory of them he'd had. "But, I had the impression Sirius said something to him, an older Sirius, that implied he cared," he explained with a shrug.

Chuckling, he grinned. "If the short version takes that long, I think we might need to move this conversation somewhere with less standing. And possibly steal one of Hufflepuff's comfy sofas so our tailbones don't get sore with that much sitting around and talking." Ouch. Jamie had a much better idea of the relationship between Regulus and Sirius, now. And, while he understood there were two sides to every story, Regulus' didn't sound good. It was still a strange thought to him, though, brothers so at odds. He couldn't imagine letting anything separate him from Al like that. "That's...I'll be honest, it's hard for me to comprehend how brothers could fall out so badly. It just seems very foreign to my way of thinking. I would pick my siblings over anyone, even our parents. I can't imagine despising them over anything. Still, and don't hex me, maybe it's time you let the past go? You're the only two of your line left unless you start looking at everyone's family tree to see where they intermarried. There isn't any Black family any more outside the two of you. If you let him leave you behind without a fight, what will you have left?"

Jamie let out a soft snort. He really hoped Sirius was nothing like his Dad, not the Dad he knew as opposed to Harry, now. "You'll have to tell me if that works any better than forcefully shoving grey areas under his nose. Because, with Dad, that's exhausting. I'm hoping Harry hasn't gotten that bad, yet. But, you looked like you were headed somewhere other than me, so I should probably let you go. I'd love to grab some time with you later, though, talk over your plans with the wizengamot and the laws you're working on. High level, just trying to get a feel for the positions of the new government if I'm going to be helping with the 'PR'." And, if he ever did convince Harry they needed a more unified communications strategy, he didn't want to be playing catch-up.

Regulus snorted. "My brother doesn't even remember what happened to us now and this is two years after Hogwarts and no Azkaban. Sirius has selective memory based on how he feels at the moment, so I would trust whatever your father heard even less. Sirius can't be arsed to ask the questions now that he has me right here to answer."

He smirked. "We could stand. Mother said it was wonderful for once's posture." And of course it was foreign to them. Regulus would have been surprised more if it were any different. "That's because you lived at peace and we were at war. Families, houses, they all meant picking a side in a war that was waiting for us the moment we left school. Not that it mattered for us specifically Sirius was intent on turning his back on our family and it would have only worked if I had gone along with him." He shrugged. "Sirius left me behind for your grandfather long ago. I've made my own way and I certainly won't trust him to change. He is who he is and that means in love with your grandfather to the point that no one else matters. As you've seen from this game, I don't play lost battles."

Since they literally could stand here and talk about Sirius forever, he decided to let it go. "It doesn't change reality, but it gets me great pleasure to see the pain in his face every time I say it, following by the anger, because he can't argue with me, followed by the inevitable, we should move past it, at which time I'm gracious enough to agree that I'll forget about their genocide until the next time we talk. It's much more entertaining than expecting him to use his brain." He nodded. "Of course, feel free to drop by, although you might have to find your own way to find pleasure, because you're job is about to get really hard. I'll see you around," he said with a tiny bow of the head, before walking away.
