Sometimes, this island was like a drama sundae, with whipped cream made of twenty-something angst, sprinkled in passive aggressiveness and topped with a Songbird cherry. Sometimes, though, like that moment, as Nick and Sarah were on their way from the café to Frou Frou so Sarah could shop for a dress, it wasn’t so bad. Hanging around with his little sister was safe. Comfortable. Regardless of the tons of punches and all-in-fun insults, it was like hanging out with his sister was a breath of fresh air.
It was hard for Nick. When people were cruel to Lexie, or really anyone who he loved, if he heard about it he always did what he could. Even if it meant that later on down the line, he had to show up at AJ Swafford’s door and beat the living snot out of him, he’d do it. He was a firm believer in defending what was right against assholes like Swafford, and quite obviously, betting on Lexie’s love life, especially when she was finally happy, struck him as anything but right. So, he did his job as a friend and attempted to instill the fear of god in the douchebag. Wasn’t his fault that he didn’t have the sense god gave a peanut and decided not to listen. It’d bite him in the ass later.
“So, I tried to warn him, but I don’t think he listened,” he explained to Sarah. He’d carefully left out any details about Emma telling him or anything else about where he’d heard, just that he’d found out and what he’d done from there. “Pretty sure this is gonna rear its head again in the future, but I’ll deal with it then.”
Pausing, he turned to look at her from his place in the driver’s seat. “You can’t tell anyone, okay? I wasn’t supposed to but I can’t keep secrets from you.”
