"I'm sorry to have to tell you this sir, but--"
Ten words.
Ten centimeters away from the fuse box.
Gravity could have taken cared of the rest, pushing his fingers against the wires within the box and shorted the fuses to turn off the lights and the generators. Then a touch to the oil truck next to the gas station, switching from parked to drive in less than a minute, heading straight for the garage that was still surrounded by crime scene tape.
Ten minutes ago, the little town where Karl and Alyssa had been holed up in would've been gone by now, engulfed by fire and wreckage and making it all just a bad memory, a bad mistake.
But ten minutes ago, it was those words that had him in the car and flying down the interstate towards the hospital.
He could manage to obliterate a small town single-handedly, erase cities from maps, and destroy countries from history books - but to save a mortal life was completely out of his hands.
And to imagine that the one life that he couldn't save was his partner's at the end of the mission - it was too much to be called blatant irony. Mortals had the habit of blaming everything horrifically ironic as the work of the Christian god, but as a god, himself, Karl didn't believe in the "Almighty".
Gods were gods and he didn't appreciate especially that God frakking around with his partner's life.
Once the car was haphazardly parked, Karl ran through the automatic doors with "EMERGENCY" pasted on them, a huge understatement for what was going on.
