rp: the wind under our wings (or something like it)
Who: Bryony and Marcus
What: Flying!
Where: Flint Manor
When: Sunday, March 8 2005, early afternoon
Rating: These two are always gong to be SFW

Perhaps one of the good things to come from his mother being admitted to St. Mungo's was that Marcus didn't need to scout out a place for Bryony to fly with him, or worry about charming them so that they would be unnoticed, the way they'd done during their childhood. The acres surrounding Flint Manor gave them more than enough privacy, and the only ones who knew what they were doing were the house elves, so Marcus wasn't worried about any repercussions from Bryony's mother discovering her hobby.

Standing on the front lawn at their appointed time, he was trying - and failing - to get Rakey to stop fussing over him. Only after a few long minutes spent reassuring the elf that he was in fact eating and sleeping on a regular basis did she leave him to his own devices. Shaking his head with a fond smile, Marcus looked up at the sky, tracing the clouds and watching the leaves on the trees dance with the wind. There was s light breeze, but it was warm enough that he didn't think they would experience any difficulties - all in all, a perfect day to be on a broom.

Hearing the honesty in Marcus' tone - and seeing it across his face - Bryony beamed at him. The reality of the situation would take some getting used to, but anything that made Marcus happy was good in Bryony's book. "How long has it been?" she asked, not because she thought she had any right to know earlier, but just because she was curious.

She'd have known - even if he hadn't said so - that he had no experience with this. Nor did she, save for watching her sisters date, which didn't seem a sensible comparison at all. She felt a slight pang at the thought that she would never get to experience it; a belief she'd held for years, though never spoken aloud, and another when she wondered if there would come a time when there was some one more important to Marcus than herself. Her pleasure in his happiness easily overrode the shamefully selfish feelings that she didn't allow herself to dwell on. "I'm so happy for you!" she said, without the least trace of bitterness.

As usual, seeing Bryony smile was a lot like standing in the sun for the first time again, the warmth of it suffusing through him, and he returned the expression with a small smile of his own. Marcus could feel a hint of a flush to his cheeks at the question, and he ran a hand through his hair absentmindedly as he said, "About a month and half." It still felt like a dream at times, that something as good as what he had with Roger couldn't possibly be real. That feeling wasn't helped by the fact that the majority of the time, he was almost crushingly aware that he had no idea what he was doing.

"Thanks," he responded, smiling at her, albeit still a little tentatively. "I don't know if you'd want to meet him, but that can be arranged if you did," he offered with a small shrug. Marcus wasn't sure how that would go, his two favorite people in the same place at the same time, but he was willing to see, if either party had any interest. His smile widened a little as he added, "You know you'll always be the queen of my heart, though, no matter what happens." The endearment was one that had been born back before the war, when their engagement had still been a sure thing, and even though things had changed, the sentiment still rang true.

"Oh." Bryony was a little surprised by the answer - she'd thought maybe a few weeks - but she could tell Marcus was pleased, now that he'd got through the ordeal of telling her. "It must be going well, then," she guessed. She had literally no experience in this area, not counting her engagement to Marcus, but presumably if it had lasted over a month already it certainly wasn't going badly.

She flushed a little at Marcus' words, not sure if he'd somehow known what was going through her head or if it were pure coincidence. "Of course I want to meet him," she insisted. She wouldn't have pushed for it, of course, and there was no particular rush, but anyone important to Marcus was someone she wanted to know. She shook her head slightly, more flustered by the endearment than she'd usually be. "I doubt Roger would want to be queen anyway."

"I'd like to think so," Marcus said with another small shrug. He certainly thoughts things were going fine, though he still had a lingering nervousness some days that he was somehow going to mess everything up.

Nodding at her answer, he said, "Then we'll make sure that you do." He would have to figure out what exactly that would entail, but he figured that those details could be sorted out later. He smiled slightly at the shake of her head, and then laughed lightly at the comment. "Probably not, but I've learned not to assume anything when it comes to Roger." It had just seemed important that he let Bryony know how important she still was to him, even if life had taken them in a different direction that they had always thought.

Again, Bryony felt a welling of sadness that she'd never get to experience anything Marcus was talking about, but she quickly diverted her mind to other things. She was living away from home, she got to paint and learn from professional artists and she still had Marcus in her life - it was more than she'd expected when her father first announced that their engagement was off.

She lifted her broom until she was several feet above him, sensing that the difficult part of the conversation was over, and wanting to fly some more - to see if she could outdistance her own petty jealousy. "I'll race you to the kitchen garden," she suggested, turning in the right direction even before he had answered. He usually gave her a headstart anyway, since it was the only way to make it a fair game.

Marcus laughed at the challenge, as always allowing Bryony to pull away before taking off himself. Not that it much mattered - he always let her win, the one counterpoint to his usual mindset of having to be the best. He followed at what was practically a leisurely pace - even as the ground sped by below him, it was nothing compared to the way he flew during practice or matches, and it was relaxing, to be up on a broom without worrying about anything other than just flying.

Even with that though, he caught up with Bryony as the house came into view, and he slowed slightly allow her to stay ahead. Marcus wasn't sure if she was ready to land, or if she would want to do a few laps, so he waited to see what her next move would be, planning to follow suit no matter what it was.

For Marcus the pace was leisurely, but Bryony gripped her broom with both hands as she watched the ground speed past and felt the wind tugging at her hair, trying to pull it from from the ponytail. She slowed when she neared the garden, pointing her broom down into a carefully controlled dive before she hopped off and touched a hand to the kitchen wall to declare her victory. She grinned up at Marcus, squinting slightly against the sun as he came down to join her.

If only she could fly and paint and be with Marcus every day, she really thought she could be happy - if she didn't have to 'earn' those pleasures by first spending time with her mother and sisters. To focus her mind back on the positive, she looked around the familiar garden. It was looking a little less well kempt than she would expect - presumably because Philipa wasn't in residence to tell the house-elves what to do, and there was no one they needed to provide food for. She knew if she mentioned it, Marcus would add it to his list of responsibilities to take care of, so she kept quiet. Maybe she could get Tilly to send some messages, if only she could think of something to do with the vegetables that were being grown.

Grinning at Bryony's win, Marcus dismounted almost carelessly, jumping from his broom while it was still a few feet from the ground, glad that he managed to land in such a way that didn't require him to roll through the grass in an undignified manner. Not that it would much matter - she'd seen him in any and all states, so he wasn't nearly as concerned with keeping up appearances here.

"Great job," he said sincerely, proud the same way he always was whenever they flew together, knowing that he'd taught her that skill and that she'd honed it on her own. He could remember a time when this sort of thing had been the highlight of his day or week, and though things had changed, he was still grateful as ever to have her in his life. "Rakey will throw a fit if we leave without her getting a chance to try and feed us something, at the very least," he said with a small smile, nodding slightly towards the kitchen door - an unnecessary gesture, since Bryony knew the house almost as well as he did.
