Intelligent rats sound good, until you remember that their intelligence means they can understand things like family and children, that they can feel love and grief and that they have the wits to know how to use their fabric bedding to hang themselves.

If I'd kept a better eye on them this wouldn't have happened

Don't apologize. It's unfortunately something that has to be faced in my line of work, but the ones my heart goes out to are those who feel that way themselves. You're not bringing up anything specific at the moment, don't worry, and I've gotten pretty good with self-care so that even if you did accidentally, I have supports in place.

That's just a day, Merlin, but I'm glad you said something about it. I know with me, it's not good to keep that kind of stuff inside, but I know other people deal with things differently than I do.

How about you? How are you handling it? What are you doing to take care of yourself? And sorry if the healer in me is coming out.

Okay. But please, let me know if you can't, okay?

I don't think a lot of people know that this could happen. I thought it better to warn anyone who might be in the same situation.

It's fine. I'm fine. I think I might be better off looking for a different line of work though.

Thank you

I promise I'll let you know if that happens.

That's brilliant of you to think of that. I think we sometimes forget that animals are intelligent creatures too, even those who aren't bred to be highly intelligent.

Are you sure? If that's what you want, then go for it, but this is very recent - will you take some time to think about it? And make the decision when you're less emotionally charged?

My pleasure - that's what friends are for.

Thank you

I don't think anyone would expect them to have progressed to the point where they would do something like that. I should have known better

I don't think I'm the kind of person who should be in charge of the welfare of anything unable to take care of itself.

Oh You're a good friend Ernie

I think we tend to misjudge animals in general. I've heard of dogs and ducks who take their own lives in other ways, so it's not unique to intelligent rats - they probably just have more advanced methods at their disposal. And no matter what Hermione says, it's not always something you can just prevent.

I'm sorry you feel that way. If you ever want to talk more about it, and any options you want to look at, I'm here.

I try, and you make it easy.

It wasn't pleasant. And I suppose not. I should have thought about it though, I knew they were in a bad way and I left the hammocks there Just feels like I should have paid more attention.

What kind of options?

Well, thank you, but I don't think I can take the credit for your kindness.

There's always options in life, it all depends on what you want to get out of it. What do you like to do? What do you do well? What places are there openings? Options everywhere.

What I meant was that it's easy to be kind to someone deserving and accepting of it. Trust me, it's difficult to be kind to someone grouchy and belligerent.

Oh. I get what you mean. I'll let you know? It's kind of you to offer.

Yeah, but I get the feeling you would be anyway.
