The mid-afternoon sun streamed in through a window of Altair's otherwise dark bedroom. Altair lay sideways on a chair on a patch of floor illuminated by sunlight, his legs dangling over one arm and his back resting against the other. The book open in his lap, The Dawn Rose by Suoh Min, was a new acquisition, and Altair turned the pages languorously with long pianist's fingers. It was an excellent read, the prose clearly written by the practiced hand of a master. The plot was suspenseful and intriguing, and the characterization was flawless. Even so, Altair was unable to concentrate on what he was reading. He felt restless.
Just then, he thought he heard the doorbell. Instinctively, he checked the time on the mantelpiece. It was just about time for afternoon tea, although Altair hadn't realized they were expecting guests. Still, the sound was enough to arouse his curiosity, and his book deserved to be read in a more attentive mood anyway.
With some difficulty, Altair swung his legs to the floor, put a bookmark in his book, and headed downstairs to the front door of the estate. The upstairs rooms had wood floors covered in thick carpets, but the stairs and entryway were marble. The heels of Altair's boots clacked faintly against the stone, the sound echoing through the corridor.
He paused on the landing. The butler, Fauntleroy, was greeting someone at the door of the estate. At first, the butler's body blocked Altair's view of their guests, but as Fauntleroy stepped aside to take their things and lead them to the parlor, Altair got a glimpse of a small, and very lovely young woman with hair like moonlight.
