Iorek Byrnison

WHAT: Lyra's Search Party

It had been a long night

Iorek spent the night in the forest, not wanting to make much of a fuss. While Katniss had told him of Pickman House, the door looked small and the building did not seem like it would be very comfortable from the outside. He was a bear, not some human in cloth filled rooms. So he had dug himself a cool ditch by the ocean water to nestle in for the night. But the nights in Dunwich were very active. He did not get as much sleep as he would have liked fighting off creatures Katniss had warned him about. Luckily he was much too big and his hide too thick for the vampires to be much worry, but they were annoying to his slumber. At the very least, the breeze from the ocean at night had been some relief to the very warm environment he had found himself in. [[This is going to be IC/OOC for the people searching for him, and a thread for Lyra and whoever wants to speak with the Bear.]]

Finding Iorek - Lyra

Lyra had been searching for what felt like ages. There were many wooded areas he could be in, and eventually Lyra had given up. Iorek wasn't a normal bear, he lived in the snow near oceans and there were very few trees there. What was the likelihood he would stay in the forest only? Plus, it'd be colder next to the water.

So, the ocean it was.

Lyra didn't have trouble finding him on the beach once she'd been there. "It's really him, Pan!" She practical squealed, emotion clouding her voice and a sudden rush of tears prickling behind her eyes. She wiped them away, annoyed at them, before running towards her bear.

"IOREK! King Iorek Byrnison, my dear, wake up!"

One black eye opened at the sound of Lyra's voice. His tongue licked his lips a few times before he yawned wide, lips extending and tongue curling slightly. "Lyra Silvertongue, are you back from the Land of the Dead already?" He stretched his limbs as he adjusted his position so his head was no longer on the ground but his body still lay in the dirt hole.

"Or is that where Lord Asriel has sent us with his whole in the sky?" As much as Katniss had explained to him about the town, he still believed it was Lord Asriel's fault and that it all had something to do with the different worlds merging in some way. Why else would the locals be so oblivious to him as they were?

It was really him. Iorek was really here, and Lyra couldn't help herself. She threw her arms around his great wide neck and buried her face into his fur. She cried softly, the sound fortunately muffled. Still, she couldn't hide the tears when she finally let go so she could answer his questions, wiping her face quickly with her hands all balled into fists.

"Neither - oh Iorek, there's so much to tell you. I don't think we come from the same time." She was obviously older, three years or so older than he had seen her, if not older than that, since she wasn't entirely sure how long it had been since she went to the Land of the Dead. "It's all over for me, has been for just about three years. I haven't seen you since - since then, really."

“Come from the same time?” Katniss had tried to explain as much as she could to the bear, but there had been a lot and most of the focused had been on being one of many that came from a different world and are trapped in the small town. Iorek did note that she looked older though, humans showed their age so visibly, but she still had that youth he remembered in her.

“So you made it out with your friend, Roger, then?” Iorek searched Lyra’s expression for any subtle hints to the lifetime he had missed- of her journey. He knew she was as determined as any to get something done when she put her mind to it. It was very much like her father in that way, even if Iorek did not much like the man.

“Are the artics frozen again?” He asked, as his desire to not be in the himalayas had been greater than his desire to smash Asriel’s face into the dirt for his deeds.

"Yeah, we came from different times, well, some people here who have other people form their worlds with 'em, are from different times." It wasn't hard to explain, but it was hard to wrap her head around it sometimes, even though she'd been here a while. Hearing Iorek ask if she made it out with Roger, the pain hit her face for a brief moment, before she smiled - both sadly, and a little proudly. At least she knew where he'd come from, then. Probably right after they'd left and she went into the Land of the Dead.

"We cut open a window from the Land of the Dead to a different world, so I did find Roger, but he couldn't come out, not really. When he did, all his atoms flew apart - like the way our daemons sort of fade and spread apart? That's what happened. All his atoms split up and joined the world, and that's what happens when you leave the Land of the Dead, but you get to become part of a beautiful world there." She tried not to think on it much - not because she was afraid, she knew what to expect of Death and she was fine with it, but she didn't like to get too close to thinking about everything that had happened after that.

She nodded her head though, at his next question. "Things were gettin' back to normal, yes, you returned to Salvbard."

"He has rejoined the cycle of life then," Iorek nodded. He understood that humans became sad with death. He had seen it enough in his time in exile. But to be able to witness her friend go back into the world around them seemed like it would make her feel better for it. The Life and Death cycle was an honoured process amongst the Panserbjørn.

"Ah, that is good to hear. At least my people are back amongst the good snow." He shook his fur as if to respond to the weather around them. "It is too warm here. I do not like it."

"It was awful, Iorek. I -" She glanced guiltily at Pan, he pointedly looked away from her, and wandered off a little bit away. She sighed, looking briefly devastated at the ground. "They was all trapped there, in the Land of the Dead. They was sad and trapped and these great winged creatures were scarin' them all the time, but we let 'em up, Will and I, we did, so they could rejoin the cycle. Everyone from every world was stuck there. Humans, anyway." As far as she could tell, she hadn't seen any bears there. Maybe it was different for them.

She frowned at his comment about the heat. It was pretty warm here, and she knew with all his fur it would be much worse for him. "There are places inside where they put on this thing - air conditioning, I think they called it, and it makes it colder inside than outside. Maybe that would help?"

Iorek listened to her explain, nodding his head sagely at her descriptions. The Land of the Dead was a human place. Bear spirits where one with nature in a way that they were returned to the earth from where they were born as their armour would fall as well and be absorbed there. Humans had too much worry to just go into the cycle of life that they had to have a stopping place to accept it first. But it was still a cycle and Lyra's work obviously helped restart it.

"Air conditioning? Does it make snow?"

The clouds parted letting the sun hit Iorek and he let out a deep bellowing sneeze. In an instant his form blurred and changed into a human male. His eyes wide, he patted his body. "This again," he growled, the sound almost unnatural for the human shape but perfectly Iorek's growl. "This land has cursed me."

"It forces cold air into a room. I dunno where they get the cold air, but it's like a little vent and cold air blows through it and it feels nice." She explained as best she could, as she was not well versed in the sort of technology they had here that didn't relate to food or fun. She knew the names of most things now, but how they did what they were supposed to do? Not so much.

Before she could attempt to convince him more to find somewhere with air conditioning, the bear sneezed - which was already very weird in itself, but then he -

Lyra screeched and nearly fell backward. Who was this man, who stood in the place of the armored bear? Her armored bear? Of all the things she had seen so far, this was the most bizarre. Perhaps it was because it was happening to Iorek, whom she knew and loved dearly. The very large man before her with very long hair made her give pause. He was almost as intimidating as the bear.

"Iorek? Are you - did you just sneeze and turn into a human?"

Dressed in seemingly grey boxers, Iorek's armor shifted with him becoming a coat of plates. Leather and metal with a simple studded design that reflected the design of his bear armor, the armor looked like a tight tunic with no sleeves. While the muscular human body might have looked uncomfortable in a more modern design the armor fit his form perfectly, as it did in its normal form.

He let out a huff. "This has happened once before. Last night as I was finding a place to sleep." His voice was still low but in a more human range where emotions might be able to be heard.

"Yes, I seem to have been cursed by this world. Sneezing gives me this horrible shape."

"It's - it's not a horrible shape, could be nice." She replied, though she wholly disagreed with her own words. Not that there was anything wrong with his human shape, but he was not a human. He was a bear. This was wrong and she did not like it. Iorek Byrnison, King of the Armored bears was not a human, nor had he ever tried to be one or pretended he was one, like Iofur.

She patted his arm gently and then took a step back. He was just as intimidating in this form, however, and quite tall. Not as large as his bear-self, but tall. He towered over her a great deal.

"Maybe someone'll know some magic here that'll help you get to how you always was, stop the sneezin'. I dunno, there's lots a magic people here."

She was being kind. He understood that much and that their definitions of horrible might be different. It could be nice in human terms but he was not a human and therefore it was horrible. The strange magic even affected his armor- his soul- it was an invasion of his very being and he did not like it one bit.

Iofur would have been jealous, of course, but that did not matter because the human wannabe was not there.

Iorek's nose scrunched at the feel of her hand in his arm. Not in that she was touching him but I'm the fact that the arm was bare. No fur. It felt weird. Even if it was cooler in the summer weather.

"Are there witches here? They might be the only ones that could figure out this curse."

"Yes there are witches but they ain't the same as our witches." She replied, removing her hand and taking a look first towards Dunwich, before she turned her attention to the sea.

At least they came from a place that already had a lot of different worlds. "But there's lots of 'em so maybe we can find someone who can do somethin' about it, I dunno."

Since he was in human form, maybe a trip to Pickman was in order now. "Do you want to go see Pickman, put some... clothes on your human form and all that, so if it happens again you can be ready? There's also food, and it's colder inside there."

"Pickman is the human housing. The girl, Katniss, told me about it. Though I believe it was in courtesy. We did not think I would be able to fit through the doors. I did not bother to look into it for myself as the first send perfectly fine and I could smell the sea from the Joy area I had landed in." He had not paid attention to the name of the human park.

He sighed, a sound still familiar but much more human in the form.

"If it is colder. I would like to see it. But I do not wish to constantly be in a human home. They tend to fill it with useless things."

"It is colder in there, I promise. And, you ain't gotta put anything in your room if you don't want. It's not like a house, not really, it's like a... it's like a big building with a lot of small rooms inside and each room has things in it the person - or bear, or whatever - living inside it wants to put in there." She tried her best to reassure him, just wanting to be helpful.

"There's also a forest in there, with lots of trees that can shade you so you won't be so hot, that could help too. We'll figure... all this out."
