[Private to Liam R.]

Our agent kept asking about you during lunch. It was very uncomfortable and a little damaging to my ego.

[Public]

If you had a quiet person in your head, or are unaware that you have one at all, how do you decide when to go through the door? I assume it'd be because you were bored and couldn't sleep.

[Pause.]

I'm teasing you. And, now I've upset Faust. Stop pouting, I can see it through your words.

You might be lying. [If writing could be pouty, hers certainly is.] I can't tell with her. I can feel what she feels, but that's it. Faust will tell me the truth once I see him.

Are you so certain that all men except him are untrustworthy?

So, you can't talk to her either.

I thought the Beast was too, but I changed my mind. I'm pretty sure he isn't trustworthy with other people, but I'm not trustworthy with other people either.

No. Not like my Olive.

A couple months ago you would have known I was teasing you. I blame the Beast. There's no point in letting an abusive, oversized dog make you feel terrible.

I miss her, too.

I don't like this new place much. I thought he would have asked me back by now. He hasn't.

Why can't she just come back?

Have you tried talking to his Vegas side? I'd offer you Faust. Faust would offer you Faust, but I doubt he'd be able to talk some sense into the Beast. They're too different.

She got herself into some trouble. Maybe she'll be back one day once it's passed, but I wouldn't count on it. [...] The new girl seems nice enough. Witty. You like witty.

I have. He doesn't like me much. He thinks I'm silly and selfish, and maybe he isn't very wrong.

Yes, but Olive adored me.

Silly and selfish aren't terrible qualities to have.

If you're looking for someone to tell you how to get over her absence, I'm not the man to do it. I wrote her postcards even when I knew I'd never see her again. Then, when I did find her, I realized that even if we were still the same kids we had always been, she had changed so much more than I had and there wasn't a way I could understand the why and how of it.

[...] I'm sorry. [...] This new girl. She'll like you well enough if you give her time.

That depends on who you are. Snow hates silly and selfish. Does Faust like the mundane world?

No, I'm just angry at her for going. I don't like it when people leave, not after they promised never to go. I can be terrible to those people, just to make myself feel better. I'm not very nice a lot of the time.

Why didn't you change? Didn't you know how?

Do you think Faust is the kind of man who gets nervous very often?

She had to leave, Rose. It was life or death. Be terrible to someone who left you out of selfishness, not their own life.

Do you know how to change?

No. Or if he does, I'm sure he pretends well.

I know, but I can't help being angry. It's just there.

I don't. Blue says I do, and he gave me books where I do, but reading isn't helping it happen any quicker.

Fabletown makes him very nervous. He made the mistake of picking people to worry over in a town that isn't familiar to him at all.

I'm angry, too. Not at her. Not really. Just, angry she's gone.

The only man I've seen change is Faust, but that's only because he had everything taken from him.

I want to go home.

Maybe if we run the new one off, Olive will come back?

[...] I don't know if that counts. I was well behaved in the middle of nowhere, with the merchant, but I was me again just as soon as I got around people. If he had everything back, would he go back to being the same?

Describe your home for me.

Don't be childish.

I think the opposite is true for him. If he truly had nothing. No friends, no magic, nothing, he'd go back to the way he was before. But, he cares about you. He wants Quasimodo to find happiness. He likes meddling with serious people like Snow.

Somewhere that isn't this town where there is nothing green, and where everyone looks down when they pass on the street. Everything is cold here, with schedules and it's almost like being prisoner with all the rules about magic.

I can't help it. I'm childish. I would do it, if I thought it would work.

Snow needs meddling more than anyone I know. She's always been serious, but she was happy and serious once. I know it sounds odd, but it's possible. She needs someone to make her lighten up. So does Quasimodo. Why is he drawn to those people?

I don't know if you can ever find that place, but you know this town is temporary. At least for Faust. He hates it, too. More than he's hated a place since his own home.

Being an adult is fighting urges like that. In case you were really concerned about changing.

It's either because no one helped him when he was lost like they are or he simply likes to fix broken things. He reminds me a little of a preacher. Do you know what that is? A man of god who spends most of his time sitting down and talking things out with people because heaven isn't going to do anything for them.

He wants to go home too?

I'm not sure you're right. I've known plenty of elders who do hurtful, hateful things. Maybe they just think about them more before they do them.

I don't know preachers. I don't think Faust likes to think about himself very often, and thinking about other people makes that easy. He never talks about himself. Have you noticed? I talk about myself all the time. I notice right away when other people don't do the same thing.

He wants a place he can practice magic. Somewhere pleasant.

Age doesn't indicate maturity, most of the time.

Perhaps that's why you two get along so well? And, I don't think he likes himself very much.

I'm not sure I'd describe the castle as pleasant. Would he? And you're right about age. I'm hundreds of years old, I think. At least that's what Snow says, though I don't remember it being that long. If I haven't matured by now, I don't think I'm going to. I think I missed my chance by not leaving after the war.

I like him. I can like him loudly enough for both of us.
