Someone must know something about birthday presents for preteen girls. Is a tablet a good present to give a fourteen year old for her birthday or is that asking for trouble?

I totally hate to break it to you, but 14 = teenager.

I didn't either. I think for my 14th birthday I got a sweater. I'm afraid she'll break it. I'm not even sure why she wants it.

You can't break a sweater. Well, not like a tablet.

It...depends. Tablets have most the same functions as a computer and are less of a financial commitment than a laptop, but their size means they are more fragile and easier to lose.

They're wonderful for reading books when you're out and about, though. And iPad has interesting translation software if the girl you intend on purchasing it for is studying a language.

Hmm. She's a voracious reader, maybe one of those e-readers would please her.

I wish I could get her interested in learning a language! I want her to learn Russian to speak with her grandparents godparents but Russian is boring because the grown-ups speak it, or something.

It is easier to carry around a Kindle than a pile of books. That isn't to say I'm a person who believes ebooks are the future and print is a dying industry! But a bag can only hold so many paperbacks.

It can be difficult language for English-speakers, but it's not a dull one.

Can't really go wrong with electronics these days. When my younger brother was 14 I got him a E-reader, the 'rents said that they didn't quite lose him as deeply into the world of video games as they would've if I had bought him an XBox.

I should have got him the XBox though, I would've borrowed it.

That's the second suggestion of an e-reader... hmm, there might be some merit to it. It does seem like it might be a better gift for a kid who loves to read already. How much trouble can you get into with a kindle, anyway?

Fourteen-year-olds in general are sort of always asking for trouble. Especially girls. At least if you get her a tablet, you get to be the cool dad/uncle/sperm donor.
