And here I thought I moved into the part of town where gunshots weren't a real regular thing.

Nobody is getting me out of this apartment without my mattress. I'd like to see them try.

Well that just isn't right. If my life's falling to shambles, I should at least have decent camera angles. Ones from above come to mind, so I don't develop a second chin out of nowhere.

If you invested, they wouldn't have to. But I get the impression you would be a difficult client, with your mattresses and your disbelief in stocks. I don't want you. I like them unquestioning, docile and grateful, when I work.

Surprise second chins would be cruel. Sepia toned, to remove the unsightly bits.

I'd show up with heels and a gun, and you'd have no one to blame but yourself.

Sepia tone would make my double chins look jaundiced, and that's just adding insult to injury.

See, that's precisely why I don't want you as a client. You'd be difficult. And if you showed up with a gun to my office, the security detail would have you flat on your stomach and hands behind your back in no time at all and the heels would be ruined.

Really? I've never lent sepia tone that much of my time to consider it.

You might like my kind of difficult. Plenty of folks have told me it's endearing, once you stop wanting to strangle me for it.

You must not be a pasty white southern girl who's got to pay attention to things like lighting.

That seems to be a contradiction in terms. Much like coffee prior to dawn, but we seem to be having a day for those.

I'm black and I'm from New York. Lighting doesn't feature greatly on my list of concerns, it has to be said.

Being a contradiction works real well for me. You always straightforward? Because some folks would say that guns and heels are a contradiction.

I'm just going to sit on over here and be jealous of your skintone and lack of double chins. You're not my favorite person right now, even if you share my feelings on Lifetime.

I'm usually what they might call straightforward. The gun was a precaution. The heels are me.

I've never been told of people being jealous of my skin-tone, before. Lifetime is a bond we cannot break, March H. Even if your pasty white ass looks bad in sepia.

Heels are never straightforward. Flats are straightforward. Heels say something about a woman.

Don't forget my chins. Don't you go on discounting my pain with your good skin.

Flats are clunky.

Oh, I'm sorry. Your pasty white ass and your double chins. Are we established yet? Can we abandon the attempted rendering of Lifetime bonds?

Flats say you don't care how your ankles look.

I suppose so, providing you don't go crowing about your better attributes in future. I got enough trouble with the creases around my eyes that resist every lotion on the market.

Flats are useful. They are exceptionally useful. But they're not remotely attractive unless you are Audrey Hepburn. And no one is Hepburn.

Oh. You care about that sort of thing?

You just like crushing my dreams, don't you.

And I'm southern. We pretend not to give a damn, but don't let it fool you. We give every last damn we got to give.

I am known for my ability, it has to be said. Dream crusher. It's on my business cards.

And I'm from New York, where no one gives a damn and they let you know about it and they mean it. But I've never found an ointment that does things what they say they will, for wrinkles.

I don't have a slogan on mine. I should add one abut having ankles like Audrey Hepburn.

There you go, crushing my dreams again. Let me guess, all your clients got themselves a pair of balls on them?

You'd be the only woman this side of 1950 that did.

Either on them or they have them. Ninety percent the former.

Men wouldn't notice. They don't look that low, as a rule.

How's that work for you?

It depends who you want to notice. Men aren't the only ones who look.

I make it work.

I don't have that subscription package.

Finance is dominated by old, white men. As are the clientele. You make it work. Whether they notice your ankles or not.

Cost savings, or you making a statement about the penis-to-breast ratio on primetime?

And they're all near blind, so you go with heels because they can see them better? Red for the same reason?

If I were to make a statement, it would be the Gettysburg Address. I'm not home enough to warrant expensive TV packages.

Neither. I like heels because I like heels. What they like (or see) I don't care about. What about you, March H? Heels or flats?

Gettysburg? You're going back real far to look for that statement.

Depends on my mood. I'm fickle, even if my wrinkles aren't.

If I'm in the mood for statements, I want to be prolific and undeniable. It's an excellent statement, why reinvent the wheel?

I would never have guessed you for fickle. You absolutely radiate stability, practicality and predictability.

You're just saying that to get my business. How ornery would you get if I dropped by for a consultation after Christmas, and still kept my money in the mattress after?
