[As 'Nightcrawler']

There is a vast community here, I see, of many types of people. I wish to know what you think about forgiveness. When it can be offered, that is, and what it means to give it. Whether it can help the person who forgives as well as the forgiven. I know what God says on this matter, but I would like to hear what man says, as well.

It's interesting, that he would confess for punishment.

His guilt clearly weighed on him. I think to be punished was a relief.

What if one is afraid of punishment?

Mein freund, there is no cure for cowardice but bravery.

You call it cowardice?

To fear punishment when you know you have done wrong? Yes, cowardice is what makes that fear. But it is also natural. Every sinner fears the fire.

I feel like it would be hard to live like that. In cowardice. One would always feel as though something is waiting around every corner.

It would be. I could not bear it, and so I understand why the man I knew chose to turn himself in. I do not think all crimes need be punished by the state, and punishment does not guarantee forgiveness. But one way or another, such debts are paid in the end.

This conversation hit a bit closer to home than I was initially prepared for, that is all.

I am sorry. This was not my intention.

Nothing to apologise for. You've simply shown me a different way of looking at things, a way that I needed.

I do not believe it makes the thing all better, as you say, but it is something. No one can bring that man back from the dead. But punishment can at least give the man who killed him his chance to atone.

I don't think it's anything. What's he doing to atone? Nothing. Sitting there, eating tax payer money.

No one is. But I will protest that there is more to it than 'sitting there'. Very few things are worse than being denied your freedom.

Big difference than here and now. We're not even free in our own heads.

What's "Nightcrawler" from?

It is what they called me when I was young, when I was with the circus. After that, it simply stayed with me. I joined a group of people who had all made names of their own, rather than go by their given names, which had little connection to who they were as individuals. Nightcrawler is not the most flattering, but it is fitting enough, I suppose.
