it's my party and i'll cry if i want to...
Who: Kozue and the adoring public You
What: Festivities
Where: Bar Kidnap
When: July 21
Why: Because of presents and alcohol.

True to her word, Kozue had established herself in the VIP area of Bar Kidnap—still pretending to be blissfully unaware of the frightening or ominous implications of the name. She hadn't gone to much (or any) trouble to prove that this was a birthday party, however; she was dressed up, in an outfit a bit scantier than her normal going-out attire. She was sporting a green, sequin-covered minidress and a pair of heels of a ridiculous height. And her hair was even more carefully arranged than normal.

The VIP area was situated on a balcony, overlooking the rest of the club; from there, Kozue was engaged in chatting amicably with one of the older girls from the tennis club, but her attention kept drifting to the entrance downstairs. More people should show up. There weren't nearly enough for the party to be genuinely successful. So, every few moments, she cast a nervous glance downstairs.

The club itself wasn't all that packed; it was a weeknight, after all, and if any of the actual grown-up patrons noticed the steady stream of highschoolers, they weren't making a fuss. And the bouncers had either been bribed very efficiently, or were under instructions not to care, either.

Kanaye had drunk way too much, and had decided to go outside to clear his head. He had got to a nearby back alley in case he needed to throw up, but was surprised to see the birthday girl here. He was about to make a "I thought there wasn't going to be any running out of here crying?" joke, but stopped. He wasn't THAT much of a dick. "What's wrong, Kozue-san?"

It took her a moment to look up. When she did, she scrubbed a hand across her cheeks, trying to make it look less like she'd been crying. "I broke my shoe," she declared, still crying, and pointing down to her high heel. Indeed, the heel of her left shoe had snapped clean off and was lying on the pavement beside her.

"A-and, Sagaki, he…" Another scrub of her hand across her face. New tears had shown up while she'd been explaining the shoe situation. "You didn't hear that?"

Kanaye nodded wisely. "Shoe breaking is a very serious thing. I can see how you can be so upset about it."

And then he blinked and laughed. "Oh, Sagaki said something mean to you as well? Yeah, he tried to break me and Maeko-chan up. And...we did." Kanaye became depressed again.

"But only for a few minutes!" he continued quickly. "Still, anything he says is complete BS. Ignore him."

She picked up the heel and very petulantly tossed it across the alleyway.

"You didn't hear it then. Well, it doesn't matter, the whole club practically heard. Everyone will know before very long. He. He called me a-a-a stupid slut and said that we were only friends because he wanted to fuck me and since I wasn't putting out there was no point to us being friends anymore and everyone heard it," she babbled, breaking for a breath and then stopping, unsure what she was even supposed to be saying.

Kanaye blinked. "Um. Ok. Why do you care? Just don't hang out with him then. You're too nice to have to deal with him. His opinions don't mean anything."

She shook her head. "I don't know! Because the whole school heard it? Would you like to be called the easiest girl in school at your own birthday? Well. Easiest boy?" She shook her head and hiccupped, and then continued crying, although less than she'd been before. "And—besides—oh, I don't know. I really don't."

Kanaye nodded. "Oh, I'm sure I have been. Hell, it might have even been on my birthday. If I had gotten mad or sad about everything someone said about me, I wouldn't be able to move. Remember that rumor about me molesting you? That sort of stuff happens ALL the time. You get used to it. Relax, Kozue-san. What people say mean nothing. It's alright."

"No, it's…" She slumped slightly. "I'm really stupid because I thought he was my friend. And I fell off my shoe and I don't know if my ankle is hurt, and everyone saw it all."

Kiriko noted Kanaye's presence as she approached the scene. She greeted him with a silent nod, but one that was nonetheless a little more courteous than usual. It was nice of him to have come out after her - not that he necessarily had any good advice to give.

She smoothed her skirt and squatted down with Kozue.

"Hey, don't pay attention to that asshole."

She canted her head and smiled, and the gesture looked a great deal more sincere than was usual for her. She extended one of her hands to lay it against Kozue's shoulder.

"He's not worth ruining your birthday over, right?"

Kanaye returned the nod. "Ikeda-san is right. Tom's a douche. Honestly, he seems to be trying to annoy people. First me and Maeko-chan, then you..."

Kanaye tapped his feet. "Maybe whoever he was asking for advice for rejected him? I don't know if that would make it more pathetic or less..."

"You think Sono-" she stopped, realizing that hey, maybe that was privileged information, but then remembered that Tom had just told her they couldn't be friends because all she was good for was a fuck and a boost to reputation, so she forged onwards. "Sonozaki-senpai rejected him? I guess."

She took a deep breath, hiccuped again, and then looked over at Kiriko; she managed something smile-like at seeing such genuine, supportive emotion from the other girl. "I guess you're both right. I should get over it. But…" Oh, there we went, back to plaintive sad mode: "Look, I fell over when I got out here and the bottom of my shoe completely snapped off." She lifted her foot to demonstrate.

Kanaye blinked. "Sonoza...You mean he was asking about Renju?" Kanaye couldn't help but laugh. "I can't imagine that ending well. It'd certainly explain things."

Kanaye walked over and looked at her foot, sighing. "See, this is what I was talking about. Never wear heels when you're getting drunk. You break one, and BAM! So much money wasted." Kanaye sighed.

"Sonozaki-senpai? Really?" Huh, that was a surprise. She took a moment to play the scene out in her head... in the most malicious way possible. Her attention was returned to the scene when she felt her friend's shoulder shake under her hand.

"Oh..." she examined the broken shoe for a moment, then looked back to Kozue with the kind of smile she was far more used to giving. "I guess it's a good thing the shoes I bought you will look really cute with that dress then, huh?"

She was busy taking shallow, measured breaths, trying to get control of the whole crying-and-hiccuping thing. When Kiriko spoke, though, Kozue blinked for a moment and then smiled, even more genuinely than before. "You got me shoes?"

At least something was looking brighter.

Kiriko laughed and pushed back up to her feet.

"Wait here, okay?"

In about a minute she was back, with her giftbag placed on the pavement between them. The bright ribbon and decorations looked wholly out of place in the back alley, but it was certainly more cheerful. She wrapped her arms around her knees and propped her chin up on them, waiting for Kozue to open it.

"I brought your purse so you can fix your makeup up before you go back inside, too."

Kanaye was still there. "Well, that looks fancy. It makes my gift look...actually, it's probably on the same level as my gift. You'll probably like it, Kozue-san, if I judged your taste correctly."

Kozue grinned between the two of them, continuing to feel better and better; her buzz, however, was massively dampened, no matter which was she looked at it. Now she was just kind of miserable-tired-drunk, and that was no fun at all.

"Oh? The giant box? Did you buy me a person or something?" She managed a laugh after that, before picking up the gift that Kiriko had brought, and beginning to unwrap it carefully. "And thanks for bringing that. I know my face looks awful, my mascara must be all over the place." It was, too. "Thank you both, really."

Kanaye laughed. "No. Just a crap load of dresses. I think there's, like, 10? And they're all hung up, so no wrinkles. I had to guess on your measurements, so if they're wrong, just tell me and I'll get them refit for free. My mom gave me some help, and she seems a lot like you. I think you two would like her, really."

Kanaye shook his head. "You don't really look that bad. I don't get why girls wear makeup. It seems kind of...superfluous. Most girls are pretty enough without it."

"Don't mention it." She smiled again. Her mascara was all over the place, but the damage probably wouldn't be too hard to fix, and some hunch told her that Kanaye would not be completely useless when it came to repairing makeup.

Trust to material goods like presents to really patch up Kozue's mood; she smiled even more, and hiccuped once but seemed to have stopped actively crying for good by now. "Dresses? Wow, and…" And now the box was open, and she withdrew a completely adorable, feminine shoe from within. "It's—Kiriko-san, it's wonderful, I love the flower thing on the front!"

"Thank you so much! I love them!" She couldn't keep from smiling, now, it seemed, as she started the process of getting her feet out of the now-broken heels, and putting on the second pair.

"My mom did mention your mom, actually, Satou-san—and thanks." It was quickly becoming Kozue's favorite word; at least her favorite word was no longer 'my shoooooooes'.

"The colour's a bit off for your dress, but we can re-do the makeup so it matches and it will be fine, right?" She was delighted that her gift had gone over well - and even if Kanaye had out-bought her, surely the circumstances under which they were presented would add bonus points, too!

Not that Kanaye could possibly outdo her in matters of taste.

Kiriko got to her feet and extended a hand to Kozue.

"It's a shame about your old shoes, though. You should go drink it off, I think." She grinned.

Kanaye nodded. "You should come over to my house any time. Well, not any time, but even if I'm not there, my mother will be. She's taking a break for a while. Trust me, she'll LOVE you. You could probably come as well, Ikeda-san."

He nodded happily. "And I can present your dresses to you! It's all amazing."

Once the shoes were strapped on, Kozue took Kiriko's hand and pulled herself to her feet. Oh, yeah, that ankle was going to swell; she winced a little, but decided that Kiriko was entirely correct and the proper response was more alcohol. "Yeah. I'm going to go wash my face in the washroom and then it's time for … I don't even know, whiskey or vodkas or something really strong."

She turned to look at Kanaye, and nodded, with a smile: "You know? That'd be wonderful."

Iburi’s alleyways were never known to be particularly safe, or clean. The city was positively bursting at the seams with street vermin of all sorts, with the most noticeable and notorious walking on two legs. Still, rats weren’t the only animals to watch out for in the back streets if you kept your ear low to the ground, and maybe that wasn’t why it was so surprising when one of them came strutting out of the shadows and into the light, the jagged scar on his mouth just as striking as the bright red fur-lined coat he wore.

“Ooh, that sounds nice senpai,” he said, chomping down on his cigar and flashing them a bright, toothy grin. “Wouldn’t mind visitin’ your place.” And taking an inventory.

Then he regarded the girls, mostly Kozue, with appraising, curious looks. “You should really use a mirror, Kondo-chan. Even pros make mistakes sometimes."

Then he frowned, gave his head a quizzical tilt, and asked them: "What're you three doin' out here?"

Kanaye looked at Reizo and smiled. "I'm sure my parents and the armed guards stationed there would LOVE to see you, Shirai-san."

He shrugged. "Tom was a douche, Kozue ran out here, we came to prevent her from doing something stupid. It's the way things work, yaknow."
