Another letter? Oh me oh my!

It might have been a good, or bad day for Ishinomori Toru, for it was on this day that another gift was placed upon his shoebox. Like the one before it, there was little attempting to disguise the placement of the offering of affection. In fact, it would have been difficult not to notice the array of color and attention that this gift demanded.

A mixed bouquet, was this day's placement atop Poor Toru's shoebox. It appeared that two types of flowers had been arranged, and placed in equal quantity in the medium-to-large bouquet. The first, a pallor of soft white, Gardenia petals burst up from the mass of cut work. The second, a deep violet, almost a stark contrast to its partner in crime, Gloxinias erupted up from the depths to give all a chance to pay them a glance. But, it was not just a gift of flowers this day, no, for like the fateful first, it was accompanied by a letter. With the same writing, the same painfully large text, and in the form of a poem.

“Am I in too deep?
You seem to colonize my sleep
Invading territories in my dreams
Creating a fortress within my realm

Reality camouflaged by your hallucination
An army of you marching in my delusion
Patrolling round and round my distraction
Guarding my mind from any foreign invasion

Firing with bullets made of roses
Launching rockets full of infatuation
Dropping missiles, blasting love
You have taken me to a place high above

Showing me heaven in a battle field
Tranquil whisper in war proves surreal
Paradise within the jungle no more concealed
Love once tangled by vines has now been revealed

Emerging from clouds of smoke grenades
I seek shelter under your company's shade
Risking awkwardness as I step further ahead
Swearing upon my rifle, as I surrender to fate

Triggering me to pour out my confessions
Those three words, aimed at your direction
Targeted towards your classified location
Detonating silence, combusting all my emotions”

Beyond the overflowing poetry, was a small, barely noticable sticky-note attached to the edge of the parchment.

'I'll give you a hint, for only you to uncover. Of my name, the first letter you could discover. In the area between I and S, no less. Do you have a guess?'

Toru stared long and hard at his shoe box when he approached it. More specifically, he found himself staring at the bright array of white and purple flowers atop it and the poem nestled among them. Flowers? Really? He hurried to remove the things before any more people saw. Granted, it really was too late, since practically half of 1-B was in the vicinity.

Then he read over the poem. The flowery language and awkward rhymes were just as horrible as in the first one, and Toru found himself wondering Who goes to the trouble of writing something like this for someone? Especially me?. And as the poem progressed, he mumbled "Sounds like whoever wrote this plays too much Steel Cog Plasma..."

He finally reached the sticky note. It took Toru a moment to understand it, as his grasp of English was admittedly poor. "L-let's see... I, J, K, L, M, N, O... P... Q, R, S..." Once he considered that, he made a groan of despair. "Th-that could be anyone!!" But still, once person came to mind strongly. He scrawled Are you Misaki Aoi? on the back of the note and put it back in his shoe box.

Toru walked away, deeply confused and carrying a large number of flowers.

A reply arrived, almost too quickly. Perhaps someone in the vicinity had been waiting? Either way, it was quite difficult to pick out anyone in particular.. For the flush of students was that of any normal wave. People could make multiple rounds, however. But someone had left and gone, now. For in the place of the sticky note was a second. A single, large word printed on the surface.

"No."

However on the first note, there had been a number of quickly and crudely scrawled letters, and even more hurriedly pen strikes over the letters that were meant to be knocked out. It left only two letters. K & R.

A message was left below, and almost impossible to decipher in the amount of speed it had been written. Clearly, the writer was nervous/paranoid of being spotted.

'Second hint, but the last one for today.'

Toru sighed in relief when he noticed the new sticky note. Though he hadn't caught the culprit, at least he wasn't being bombarded by awful poetry this time.

"K and R... Starting with one of those letters...? Th-there's nobody with those initials..." He began to mentally list people. Kiriko, Kozue, Keiichi... no, not them, they've all got good reasons not to be writing these... Kanaye... Kiyoshi-kun... Reizo...

He blushed. There was no way any one of these people would write him a letter! At the same time, it was probably one of them. So Toru wrote the first thing that came to mind, a damning question if ever there was one, on the back of the note in response.

"Are you a boy or a girl?"

The response was placed as hurriedly as the one before, a sticky note placed as a member of the now-trio of post its. The writing on it was as hurried as it was before, the person having done so obviously rushing to finish at a relentless pace.

"You'll find out this Friday. I'll offer no other clue. Be patient, and the mystery will unfold."

One final thing accompanied the message. A hurriedly sketched heart.

He took this last message, read it, and stuffed it in his pocket. Toru's heart felt as if it was tearing itself asunder, for more reasons than one. What on earth was this? He'd never thought of himself as a romantic. After all, he hadn't felt attracted to anyone in so long, what with the 2D fetish. This feeling was a new one, far stronger than anything he'd tried to suppress around Reizo. And it was making him almost ill.

Toru walked away silently, vowing to play a good H-game when he got home.

With another day passing, there was yet another something laid out for Toru on his shoebox. It appeared that this Secret Admirer was making a job of it to offer something, a clue. But this time there was no large poem, no magnificent display of flowers and bursting color. No, this time there was but one thing.

A card, prepared with all the affection that one could hope for. Laid out on Toru's shoebox. Half-open, and with a message and one more surprise attached. A ever-so-carefully pressed flower lie in a wrap to preserve it from harm. The wrap itself had been paper-clipped to the edge of the letter's side. The flower within sprouted a single ring of crimson petals, while it's dome-like center puffed out as the heart. A zinnia.

If one were to glance upon the message, and this would require actually approaching the gift this time to analyze it, they would catch a glance of words prepared in crimson ink.

'Like the sunshine in the morning, may this brighten your day, and remind you that you're thought of in a very warm way. I've a sign for you, another lead. There's a meaning in every flower, birthed from each seed. If you can decipher what each flower conveys, their secret creed, you'll have earned an answer. Write the language of each flower, and any question but my name. Think hard, for you'll only get one. But I'll be truthful to you, like the inevitability of the rising sun.'

Toru felt infinitely better about the increasing subtlety of the gifts in his shoebox. For once, it wasn't massive, embarrassing poems or huge bouquets of flowers. A simple note and a simple flower to match decreased his embarrassment significantly from what it could have been.

But of course, this simple flower was a mystery to Toru. He'd never been in Ikebana Club, nor had he any other experience that would give him a clue about flower significance or even species. The best he could manage was recognizing that there were three different types. So he took the card and the flower back to his dorm, and immediately set to work on research. Never before had the Internet been helpful to him in this way...

It didn't take him long to find the meanings once he'd identified the three types of flowers. Gardenias, gloxinias, and a zinnia..., he thought. The site said those mean 'Joy,' 'Love at first sight,' and 'thoughts of friends...' Toru sighed. Those didn't help him at all; in fact, they sounded like Misaki, who was the first person eliminated from his guesses. Still, he wrote the meanings on the back of the card, and below them, a question: "What year and class are you?"

The next morning, he put it in his shoebox.

And in time, a reply came. It was a large piece of parchment that arrived this time, wrapped over the top of Toru's shoebox like a cocoon. On the very crown of the wrapped box, were the written words. 'Second Year. 2-B.' And accompanying it? A pair of swooping green, palm leaves, taped ever so delicately beside the message. Beside this, was a second message. 'Congratulations. You got it right! Palm leaves, in flower language, represent victory.' A sketched heart was dashed next to the message, and a simple signature.

"Second year, 2-B," Toru read aloud once he picked up the parchment and leaves. That removed a lot of potential senders. Who was in 2-B? Maeko, Masami, Renju, Keiichi, Kouchisei, Toshimi... then there's that Kazuya guy and Noriko... From the earlier clue, Toshimi, Maeko, and Noriko were eliminated. This left him slightly flustered; only one of the remaining candidates was a girl. And unless Renju really was his secret admirer... well, Toru had to come to grips with this at some point or another. On a piece of notebook paper, he quickly scrawled out a response:

"So, now what? Should I just wait until Friday? I'll meet you here then, if that's what you want."

Like all the other replies, this one came with an almost unnerving amount of haste. Someone could have gone for a exodus to the nearest restroom and returned, to find a reply. And this time? There was not just a letter, but something else too! The person seemed obsessive with this gift business. Surely they must have some reserve of money for love-gifts. In any case:

This time there was a pristine gaming magazine, still in its plastic mint-condition wrap. It seemed to be the latest, in fact, and could have been bought this morning from the condition it was in. Attached to it, was yet another flower! This person surely liked to converse with flowers. Five petals of white adorned the tied five jonquils, the centerpiece of the flower was cups of golden, feathery soft hearts.

A map was also attached, stapled with the flowers to the magazine's plastic wrapping. The map seemed to be that of a nearby park, hand-drawn by the looks of it. A single bench was circled on the outskirts of the park, amongst a grove of trees. A private place? On the side of the map itself was written, 'Friday, I'll be there early. Bring the flower, I'll have one to match, so you'll know it's me. Do you know who I am?' A smiley face was drawn next to that. Ever one for the positive reinforcement.

It really puzzled Toru that the reply came so quickly. Was his admirer lurking just out of sight or something? But the gift was quite a welcome one. Another magazine, this one in mint condition, along with more flowers and a note. He'd have to read it when he got back to the dorms. And the flowers...? If Toru remembered correctly from his research the previous day, they stood for returned affection.

Yet, neither of those gifts was the important part. The map was. Toru recognized the park indicated on it; the outskirts of it were visible from his dorm, after all. Toru privately vowed to be there as soon as possible.

On another piece of paper, he replied: "I'll meet you there, and bring the flowers, too. I think I may have some ideas of who you are," and placed it where the previous gift had been.

Another dazzling quick reply, this time with no more than a note. Perhaps the Secret Admirer was trying to space out his gifts? Either way, there it lay. The script left lying in its usual place, the ink still damp on the paper.

"Do you? I look forward to it. Our hearts will find each other when we meet for Love can guide its way blindfolded."

(( This is an OOC Note. I do have the time tonight if you wish to unveil me. But it's up to you and everyone else. Take a vote? ))

THE GRAND UNVEILING SHALL COMMENCE IN FIVE, GENTLEMEN
(Anonymous)
2009-10-06 01:01 am UTC (link)
It was that Friday. The day that the Secret Admirer had vowed to reveal his or her identity to Toru. It was a day chosen for, well, the end of the week. Something to relax into, wasn't it? A day that someone could feel relieved, for the weekend awaited. And for Toru? Well, one could only guess at the apprehension rattling throughout his body. What were his feelings? Who did he expect most? Did he really want to do this? He could turn back now.. Not having to face the reality.

However, the reality was quickly closing. The rustle of footsteps over leaves, the figure that moved down one of the two stone paths leading into the small glade. It was a long, dark walk and it would be difficult to pick out the person at a distance. But there they were, a shadow moving closer towards the solace that the grove provided. The looming cover of the trees above, with only a single spot of sunlight to provide sight. Click. Click. Click. With each movement of the figure, his or her footsteps made a sharp sound against the tiles.

Only moments away now. Would Toru be ready to face the person that had sent him letters for the entirety of the past two weeks? Were Tom and Kanaye prepared to handle the identity? Is Yoshimi somewhere around here? Is this just some joke? DOES REIZO HAVE EVERYONE'S LUNCH MONEY? WHO IS THIS PERSON AND WHY ARE THEY TAKING SO LONG TO UNVEIL THEMSELVES!?

Toru's ears picked up on the footsteps. They rang out far louder than the suspicious noises in the bushes Oh, hey there, Satou-sempai, or anything else. In fact, it was as if they were the only thing Toru could hear. The suspense, the waiting, the longing. It was all finally paying off. He would finally meet his admirer.

Because it was Kazuya. The slim, almost scrawny figure appeared in the dim light that the sun provided. At first note, the coat that he wore, black as it was, didn't do much for sight. It was difficult to pick him out amongst the shade with such a thing on, but the pale essence of his skin and the the surprised look on his face. It was an appearance of meeting something that he had never imagined to. His lips were slightly open, white teeth glinting from beneath the pallid petals. His hair brushed across his face for a brief moment, dark locks swept back by a small gust of wind. It was a moment of utter, utter silence.

One that seemed to last a year, before Kazuya's stance adjusted. Had he been expecting Toru? Was this the person that everyone had waited for? In his hand, he held a book. The surface disguised by the shadows, and the grip of which he held it near his back. The first words were spoken with a soft, almost murmured voice.

"Ishinomori-kun?"

Not a word could escape Toru's lips as Kazuya approached. This wasn't what he'd expected. Not in the least. He had assumed it was someone on the team. Someone who he'd spent the past months around. Not the distant, quiet upperclassman he'd seen around the school but never even thought of talking to. The wind swept past both of them. It was dead silent, until Kazuya spoke.

And Toru stood. He stood, dropping the flowers that he'd meant to carry the whole time, and moving forward slowly, almost glacially. He felt his heart beating like the whirring of an overtaxed processor against his ribs.

Finally, he moved one foot forward. It came down with a sound like a marble chess piece on a marble floor, such was the silence. Toru paused for a moment.

Then, "A-arai-sempai?"

Yoshimi gasped at the revelation, struggling to stay focused enough to hold her camera straight. Arai-san was so tall, dark, and handsome. And Toru-kun was...well, conventionally he was one out of three, but one out of three wasn't so bad. And the contrast between them... they'd look beautiful together. They'd be the prettiest couple in the whole school if they started dating! And that stupid gossipy girl would admit that Otakun didn't belong with Scar-tan after all!

She was so excited with this revelation that she didn't notice her branch creaking ominously until - SNAP! - it was much, much too late.

The best one could hope for in a smile crept across Kazuya's features. It was a moment that he'd been expecting for two weeks.. Yet it seemed like years. When he'd see Toru here. At first, he'd thought that this other wouldn't show.. That he'd find reason to be afraid of revelation. Yet now here it was, and.. He couldn't read the emotions that swept across Toru's face.

When Toru moved, he began to move forward as well.. In his free hand, hidden behind his back, was a Jonquil. The one he'd bought, the one he'd preserved lovingly. Hoping to be able to present it to Toru in this moment alone.. However, life is not some perfect paradise or tale. And the end of all of his plans came with the very abrupt snapping of a branch.
