Twenty minutes wasn't much, even if the walk back and forth made it closer to fourty. It was something Toru was completely willing to do, especially for Kazuya.

"I-I'd really like to be able to walk with you... to and from school, o-or to other places, if you'd like. Er... wherever you'd want to go." An uncomfortable pause. "I... don't go out much. M-mostly, I stay in my dorm... b-but, I want to be able to leave it for you!" If there was one reason for Toru to be less of a shut-in, it was this.

He continued to eat, and felt relieved that Kaz was now eating, albeit almost suspiciously. Toru watched with a sort of affectionate amusement as the other boy puzzled over his taiyaki. "Kazuya-kun, y-you've never had taiyaki before?" How unusual. With his shyness and unexpected confusion at such things, Kaz almost seemed as if he, too, might be a hikikomori in some capacity. "It's a pastry with red-bean paste inside of it. I... don't really know why they look like fish, though, since they don't have any fish in them..." He was now veering into observations on par with those made in Fortunate Moon, that beloved 'anime about nothing.' "It's tasty, though! I-I think you'll like it."

Oh, so.. that was what it was? A brief redness came to his cheeks at that. He should know these things! Although, it had been.. how long, since he'd last eaten in a restaurant, much less outside his home..? He could remember a few occasions where he'd shared meals with Shirai and the assortment of other intimidating looking figures. He'd mapped out this location before for its quiet look, but he hadn't tested it.. Perhaps he should have beforehand, on an afterthought.

However, Toru's affirmative on his suggestions brought a slightly surprised, but clearly elated expression to his face. They could both try their best to visit new places, and to get out. It would be easier together, wouldn't it? "O-Okay! I'll try to find a few nice places, and then later we can choose which." At the finish of his sentence, he bit into the pastry. Despite its Fish-like exterior, the interior had a warm, rather unique center flavor. As it came in par with his liking, he began eating the array of taiyaki with a rather quickened pace, although he paused halfway into his third.

With the forever lower-bodyless taiyaki in his hand, he began to speak in a quiet voice, "Hey, Toru-kun.. It occurred to me that some of what uhm, Sagaki-san(?) said might have some merit to it.. I'm not sure how Aniki, or everyone else, will react to us. If he asks me directly, I'll tell him the truth, but to everyone else, I wouldn't. It might turn out badly, and I don't want that hardship to be on you. Please, can it be our secret?"

With Kazuya's words, reality came crashing back to Toru. This past hour or so had been great, for sure, but... life wouldn't allow for things to be this simple. Prejudice was a fact. The other people around the two students probably wouldn't be that thrilled about the bond between them... especially not parents or teachers. He hadn't remembered the obstacles to their relationship up until this point.

"Y-you're... right. It's probably safer for both of us n-not to say anything... the gossip will be bad enough, as it is. Um... f-for Satou-sempai and Yoshimi-chan... y'know, those two from earlier... I-I'll make some kind of cover story. A-and I wouldn't worry much about Sagaki-sempai; he's not the kind to spread rumors. S-so... o-of course, this can be our secret." He paused, and fidgeted with his napkin a bit. "B-by Aniki... d-do you mean Shirai-san?" Another forgotten worry was now revived in Toru's mind. "I... hope h-he doesn't ask... i-it would probably be more trouble for me..." Great. You go, reach out to him, tell him that you're not interested in guys, and now you're... well, you're together with one of his subordinates.

His hands locked together once more, the sound of stretched leather once more rising from the intensity of the grip which he seemed to be inflicting upon himself. Almost as if his hands were stress relievers in their own. While he knew he could keep a secret around anyone else, even if it meant blatantly lying and acting indifferent about Toru to do so, he could never do so to Shirai. But, if it came to that? He was fine with being scolded, struck and abused himself. He'd lived with that for awhile. But if Toru were to be harmed? His facial expression slowly shifted from one of hesitation to a cold, almost frightening (depending on your perception) mask of morbidity.

"If Aniki were to torment you, I would confront him about it, as I would anyone else. Please, Toru-kun, you don't have to worry about being harassed by anyone while I'm here. I *will* deal with any person that bothers you, permanently. You can trust me on that, okay?" His voice was a bitter, icy confirmation. Almost akin to the sound a blacksmithing hammer makes when striking a tempered piece of metal, so was the voice such a sudden change from the usual soft and quiet.

And, almost as if he had never been discussing the issue of 'dealing with problems', his voice rapidly changed pitch again. "Oh, after you're done your meal, would you like me to walk you back to the dorms? I've probably spent too much of your time already."

The sudden switch in Kazuya's demeanor was enough to send chills down Toru's spine. It was like watching one of those harmless little moe girls in an anime pick up an axe to kill the boy next door... but on a smaller scale. Still shocking, though. But he fast realized that Kaz was not to feared; he was there to protect Toru. The ones who should feel fear were the ones who'd cause him grief over his relationships.

Head bowed and fingers digging into one arm, he nodded in confirmation to the other boy. "I-I understand, Kazuya-kun... I trust you... a-and... er... thank you." Those last two words were barely above a whisper. To have someone to protect him... that was something new. Toru didn't doubt the strength of someone who could refer to Reizo of all people as "Aniki." Especially someone whose reason to protect the other was love.

But the ice in Kazuya's voice quickly melted away, melted by his own affection, so it seemed. The rapidity of the change was nearly, but not quite, distressing. Truly amazing how such a calm and loving person could, for lack of a better word, change personas like that. Toru smiled sheepishly. "Yes, I'd greatly appreciate that. B-but, please, don't think that you've been using up m-my precious time or anything... this is much more important than anything else I'd be using it for..." That being said, he still rushed to finish what little remained of his food.

He set about doing the same as Toru began to finish his meal, reflecting silently over the words spoken. Much more important than anything else he'd be using it for.. A small smile birthed over his lips at that. To think, through all of this, he was now valuable to someone. Valuable to the person he had grown to cherish most. What would happen in the following days? What would they face? It almost seemed as if those questions, that had not mattered days ago, were so important now. Now that he was with Toru. The urge to speak the three words rose in him, to say it in such a manner as if any other possibility was without merit.

Kaz's mouth opened, with the intention of saying those words.. But it seemed too soon. He'd already thrust so much of his emotions on his other. It wouldn't have been fair to say more, to burden him with that.. would it? "I should be thanking you, Toru-kun. You've done so much for me already. I owe you more than I could pay back in a lifetime."

This time, a smile came far easier than it had the last three. His face no longer seemed to resist the effects, and actually.. managed to pull off a blissful expression. Something happy. It was a foreign emotion in its own, but one that was so easy to embrace about Toru. He'd felt spots of belonging around Shirai and his gang, but this.. This was something on a far greater level.

"Y-you... owe me?" Toru said, a little puzzled. "B-but, all I did was... I-I just..." He had just accepted the love letters and responded to them. Was it that much, to the other boy? How deep did his need for affection run, exactly? Regardless, that affection was something Toru was capable and willing of giving. "I... don't want you to feel any debt to me, Kazuya-kun... Y-you did what your heart needed you to do. I... I did nothing more than accepting your letters."

But it didn't matter. Kazuya was smiling that rare, unusual smile of his again. The boy didn't seem to be much for smiling most of the time, so each instance was unique and of note... And he was smiling just for Toru, it seemed. That was the part that truly mattered most, more than anything else. That the otaku's own presence could mean that much to someone. "B-but... I'm glad, th-that I can make you this happy," he said, pushing aside his now-empty plate. "It makes me feel... w-well, th-that's not important... i-if you're happy like this, th-that's what counts..."

At first, he offered a slightly puzzled glance at Toru's inquiry at Kazuya owing him something. Of course he owed him. He owed him every fibre of his being for.. for accepting him. There was no greater thing any person could have done, and nothing that he would have wanted more. Just to be able to have importance to someone, and to have someone to value above all other things.

However, that Toru would be pleased at making him smile.. To cherish his ability to make him happy. Toru could do make Kaz's heart swell effortlessly, could he not? He had the reins of Kazuya's emotions in hands, and yet.. he valued it, instead of using it? It seemed an odd concept, but one that left an undeniably warm sensation.

Formally enough, he pulled a good amount of cash from one of his deep coat pockets, and left it on the table, and then slid out from the booth. It seemed more money than was necessary, but he appeared to be in high spirits as it was. "Thank you, again, Toru-kun. You're far more gentle with me than you need to be, but.. It's kind of you. Would you hold my hand while we walk back?" The gloved palm was raised tentatively, this time requesting the warmth that Toru's hand offered instead of his earlier attempt at offering.

Toru quickly followed Kazuya out of the booth, not wanting to feel left behind in any capacity. As soon as the other boy's hand was proffered, he grabbed onto it with his own, not caring who saw at this point. "Of course... o-of course I will! It's... the least I can do, Kazuya-kun." It was pleasant, to hold his hand again. Even with the glove in the way, Toru could feel the tiny amounts of human warmth radiating through. He doubted he'd ever get tired of this new experience. No matter how close you got to a character, the closest you'd ever come to holding hands was holding the controller.

With a kind look in his eyes, he faced Kazuya. "Shall we go... Kazuya-kun?"

"Let's." The best that one could hope for in the remnant of a smile remained on his face. This was just.. well, he really had no words for it. Simply enough, as he and Toru exited the store in the direction of the school dorms.. There was a bliss in him. His grip tightened about the one that was his everything's hand, just enough to convey the affection he felt running through him like the roaring rapids.. His heart pounding, like the very crashing waves that the rapids inflicted.

For all that was in him, he simply felt that this was right.. That no one could have crushed what they had, that their love was the one thing invulnerable to any word, any action.. That it could never be dented, scarred, or mangled in any way. While they might endure pain, their love would forever hold. It was a comfortable moment, and he felt as if there was no need to say anymore. That they could simply walk, and enjoy the fact of each other's presence.

Walk he did, hand in hand with Kaz, no longer afraid. It felt as though nothing could interrupt, nor threaten, nor even come close to affecting them as long as their hands touched. Toru now finally felt in control of the beating of his own nervous heart, which had been pounding ridiculously since Toru left the dorms in the first place that morning. The tighter squeeze on his hand by the other boy caused him to smile even more.

Was this love? He hoped so. He really did. "W-we're really lucky, huh?" he said, quietly, half to himself and half to Kazuya.

Anyone might have seen them, walking in hand and hand.. Clasping onto each other's fingers like it was the most perfect fit. It was still sunny outside, and the streets were quieter than they usually were. The only sound he could hear was their footsteps and their breathing.. And that's all he would've wanted. There were few moments in his life that he could have recounted as happier.. And fewer moments yet where he felt so relaxed. It was as if the world had managed to go completely right, for just a few minutes.

Of course, the silence was cut gently enough by Toru's voice. They were lucky.. He couldn'tve asked for anything better.. He was the lucky one, was he not? Kaz was barely more than adequate for Toru, and that Toru would settle for him? It was something he could hardly pay back in a lifetime of service. Two lifetimes. No, a hundred. An uncountable number.

"Can things stay like this for a little longer?" He asked a question in return, but did not say it directly to Toru. More or less, he was still facing forward while he spoke. Perhaps speaking to himself, the air, or even anything that might've been listening.

If anything was listening to Kazuya's simple request on that quiet street, it was Toru.

"I hope so." The response, to a question that very well may have been rhetorical, was soft, but clearly audible in the silence. "I-I'll do whatever I can to keep things this way, Kazuya-kun." With this statement, he grasped Kaz's hand tighter in his own, assuring himself of the other's presence with touch, and attempting to assure Kaz of the fact in the same action. He just wished that this happiness could last longer. Forever, perhaps. So he didn't have to think of anything else anymore. None of the trouble, worries, or suffering. Just himself and Kazuya.

At first, he was startled by the response, and the pressure returned on his hand. He'd asked any higher power to just keep things as they were. To keep the happiness in his being, the settling sensation.. To just make it permanent. But, he didn't need the help of any deity, did he? He had Toru to help him make that a reality. They could do it: together. But that time was drawing to an end. The school was fast approaching, and the time of their had walk seemed terribly short.. But it was enough, wasn't it? For now. They had so much more time to spend with each other in the future. They couldn't use it all up now, as much as Kaz would've liked to.

And so, upon reaching the gates that resembled the entrance to both the school and the dorms, he paused. It was here he'd have to part with Toru, wouldn't it be? Gone for a day.. The best they'd be able to do after this would be to talk over texts.

So, in those final moments together, Kaz grasped both of Toru's hands in his. As if he were handling the most delicate of things, so did he hold Toru's digits.

"Thank you, for everything. For spending the morning with me, for understanding, for sharing a meal with me. You're the most important thing to me in the world, Toru-kun. I want you to know that. When everything is a mess, and your emotions betray you. When everyone else seems to be fighting, just settle on that simple truth. I'll always be here for you." Now, his left hand rose from Toru's adjacent, and gloved fingers slid across this dreamlike person's cheek. Cradling his face as softly as the leather might allow. He said nothing more, but simply gazed at him, then. There was no smile, no hint of an emotion, simply the presence of touch.

It felt as if things were over far too soon. There they were at the school, the final destination, where they would part. Where things would return to normal. He didn't want them to, but it seemed inevitable at this point. So Toru calmly let Kazuya hold his hands, thank him, bring a hand up to his face.

"O-of course, Kazuya-kun. I... really appreciate that. B-because..." He sighed. "E-everything is kinda falling apart. M-my teammates... I-I mean the people in the club... they're fighting. It's tearing them apart, and... I'm afraid that they're gonna leave me behind, b-because I don't have a side to take. S-so..." With bowed head, he addressed Kaz. "P-please. I-if you mean that... it'll mean more than anything else ever could."

This time, Toru took the initiative. That hormonal part of his brain, which had woken up excited to the first love letter and hadn't shut up since, pushed him forward, cheering all the way as logic, reason, and doubt were deposed from their thrones. With a simple and calm motion, he leaned in to the boy whose gloved hand caressed his face, and kissed him.

He had been a moment away from reassuring Toru that he would have never left him behind, that he would have always been available.. When the world seemed to freeze, for what was now a moment of terror and emotional conflict. It was a situation that was totally out of his control, but the hormones flaring through him told a different story. The quaking hand that had been at Toru's cheek now slid down to rest at his shoulder blade. While his left hand tightened into a fist about a clump of the overcoat. He wasn't sure if, for a moment, to desperately regain the control control over the situation.. That he should push away. However, he doubted the more dominant side of his emotions at the current time would have allowed him such audacity.

Instead, he leant in to the kiss for as long as it might have lasted. Where every other sound seemed to be cut off, where ever other sense was now dulled, only one nerve seemed to record what was occurring. The documented curves of the lips that were against his own, what it felt like to experience his second (and perhaps first, depending on definition) kiss, and how it all seemed to click in perfectly. The last piece of the puzzle. The last moment of their day together. Was this the end of the fabled perfect date? He'd like to have thought so.

It was as warm as the hug they'd shared upon first encountered. As powerful as the words exchanged together. And as striking as the time that Toru first told him he'd care. But, it was something else, too. It was almost the finishing touch, the final thing which pushed a beautiful thing into the category of masterpieces. Kaz wasn't sure if it was right, wrong, or anything in between. But he would have done any feat a thousand times simply to feel the same way as he did now: complete.

Toru was slow to finish. Allowing his own lips to linger on Kazuya's, he felt as if he was an explorer who had finally reached his destination in a far-off land. Though he could only gaze across the vista he stood at in the hopes of exploring in the future, he had seen more in this one journey than in his entire life back in his home country. With time, there surely would be more discoveries to be made. Once the extended metaphor drew to a close, he slowly pulled back from Kazuya, face unreadable but infinitely kind.

"Th-there. I... I..." Toru couldn't finish the sentence. "You... l-looked like... y-you... er... needed that." He probably did. Truth be told, Toru needed it just as much. He pulled further away, now blushing. "S-sorry... that... I-I probably shouldn't have... b-but... I'm not sure when I'll g-get to see you next, so..."

No fantasy could last forever, unfortunately. As much as he would've liked for the moment to go on for ages and ages, it had to end. Although he was reluctant to draw back, he could at least relish in the last few moments. The memory of the touch. His eyes opened to half-lids, regarding Toru with a gaze that was eternally soft. Gentle. No words could have come to appropriately describe what had just happened. No words burst in his mind to tell Toru. But, as the stuttering teen tried to explain and apologize, Kazuya raised both of his hands to cup Toru's cheeks once more. To hold his head in the most delicate of manners. The thumb of his left hand briefly stroking the flesh it touched.

No words were spoken, then, but a smile told the entire story. Kaz leant in, ever so that their noses might touch, and then drew back once more. His gloved hands departed the warm skin, and he turned to walk away. Long legged strides pulling him farther and farther away from Toru, away from the school. He was headed home, now. He hadn't trusted his voice to properly relay words, and he hadn't trusted his mind to say anything that would have fit.

But, they'd see each other again, and this was only their first day. As he lifted his hands to look at a last time, there was a space in between each digit where Toru's fit perfectly. Another day.
