School Trip, Day Two. (THE GREAT OUTDOORS)

Who: EVERYONE (npcs welcome)
What: Hiking, Meeting (Major Arcana Only), Setting up Tents, Cooking, MYSTERY FOOD X, King's Game, Sleepn (Possible bear-wrestling)
Where: IN A WOOD
When: Late May
Why: We like camping.

Aomori-sensei was waiting outside the hotel when everyone was awake, tapping a foot impatiently and looking at his watch. Ishino-sensei seemed somewhat nervous. He'd snapped at her when she'd tried to speak to him. He was always a lot more patient with the students and she'd hoped that finally going on this trip would improve his mood. She shook her head and smiled. It was her fault her colleague had to deal with all the reporters and so she had no right to complain when he was in a mood like this.

Tent arrangements:

Boys
3: Reizo/Toru/Akiyama
3: Kanaye/Yuuto/Kou
4: Gendou/Keiichi/Shin

Girls
3: Toshimi/Maeko/Shiori
3: Kojima/Renju/Mitsuko
4: Kiriko/Emi/Masami
4: Noriko/Misaki/Tori/Kozue

"I wonder when Kiriko-chan and the others will get here. I'm a bit worried that a teacher might have stopped them." Misaki pointed out and took off her sweater and motioned for Kozue to get up.

"Here you can use this so your skirt doesn't get dirty Kozue-chan."

Renju hated the outdoors. She hated hiking even more.

Her feet were aching and her calves sore by the time she'd finally found something remotely resembling a path. She'd lost her map somewhere along the way, and what was supposed to be a brief side trip to check out some interesting-looking plants had ended with her spun around and with absolutely no idea which way to go back. Unable to keep still and unwilling to call for help, she'd set off in a random direction--she'd run into someone eventually, right?

Now, she was no tracker, but it was pretty obvious that someone had come through this way recently, so she pushed onward till she came to the edge of a clearing, and...

"... oh." She cleared her throat lightly and pulled her jacket tighter around her, her eyes flicking around the group. She was going to have to ask one of them for directions back, but most of them she didn't know, and the couple she did--was that Shirai-kun over on that log? She hung back in the shadow of the trees, chewing on her bottom lip nervously.

Kanaye stared at the new-comer. It takes skill to fail so badly as to find this place. And yet, here she is, randomly walking into their little group. Kanaye started to panic. He has been seen in the company of Tom and Reizo. His image will be ruined! Quick, damage control!

"Well~, Renchan~" he said while walking over in the most seductive way he could imagine. "Fancy seeing you~ here. Do you...need something? Something that I~ can take care of?" he asked huskily as he stood in front of her and smiled pleasantly.

Maeko sighed, raising her hand to her face.

"Stop being weird, sensei. It's embarassing being around you."

She recognised Renju from her class and stood up to approach the girl herself. One person had walked into the meeting. 'In the woods somewhere' still was doing better than the supposedly private resturant room.

"Is everything okay, Sonozaki-san? You're kind of out of the way here, are you lost?"

Chuckling a bit, Kanaye simply smiled and turned to Maeko. "All right, Maechan. It was just a bit of fun!" he said giddily before backing off and once again addressing Renju. "Sorry if I made you uncomfortable, Renchan. It's my way of greeting people. Seriously though, Renchan, you need something?"

For a long, agonizing moment, Renju's brain simply locked up. Did he really say that? To her? Was he really getting at what it sounded like he was getting at?

"I don't... er... that is..." Finally, her mind managed to latch onto the one thing he said that she could actually deal with. "Please don't call me that, Satou-senpai," she wrenched out between gritted teeth, regaining her composure.

Hearing a familiar voice behind Kanaye, she peered around him to find a much more welcome face, if a less familiar one. "A little lost, yes." She adjusted her glasses and ran a hand through her hair. "I'm sorry to intrude, Akuba-san, Satou-senpai. I've misplaced my map, you see..."

Kanaye stared, doing some thinking of his own. On one hand, he needs to be nice. On the other, annoying Renju is fun. Decisions, decisions...
Compromise! Flirt with her. "Oh, but Renchan, someone as cute as you not being called -chan? That would be a travesty! I could not stand for that!" he exclaimed, posing dramatically.

After about a second, he stopped and smiled at her. "Seriously though, Renchan, that's a problem. You want the directions back to camp, then?" he asked, putting his arms on the back of his head. "Or do you plan on going somewhere else? We're talking, but I'm sure one of us could accompany you." he said, smiling in a way that, in no uncertain terms, made it obvious who would be the first to volunteer.

The whole outdoors thing didn't really suit Keiichi that much, but nonetheless, here he was. The school didn't look kindly upon ditchers, not to mention that Ikeda-san had wanted to have a meeting.

And so he walked into the part of the forest where the meeting was to take place, only to find...

"Sonozaki-san," he stammered, looking around at the group and trying not to panic. "Hello! Fancy meeting you here..."

Shiori wouldn't exactly call herself directionally-challenged, and yet she wouldn't deny that she could be considered that. Wandering around town as much as she did, though, she had somehow gained the awesome ability to set off for an unknown destination and magically be able to find it after getting lost along the way. Which was how she was able to stumble upon the group without really knowing exactly where she was.

"Hey everyone!" she greeted, glancing around to see who had shown up yet. Blushing lightly when she realized Keiichi was there, she wondered where to sit. Satou was hitting on a girl that Shiori vaguely recognized, Akuba was helping the same girl, and... ah! Kondo and Aoi were both there too! And Shirai! Beaming, Shiori skipped over to sit on the ground by the first years. She didn't care if she got dirty - all it was was dirt, after all. It would come off.

It was then that she noticed another person.

"Oh! Sagaki-senpai! You're here too?"

When the girl arrived Tom put his book away, and watched the others handle it. They seemed to know her. He sat in his spot, ready to slip away at a moments notice.

When Shiori called out he almost rolled his eyes, but instead nodded quickly, and then pulled his hat down over his eyes further.

Noticing the new arrival, he smiled a bit at Renju, saying "I apologize for this Renchan, but..." quickly before dashing off to Shiori's side.
He totally isn't conspicuous. At all. Really. He's like a ninja in his stealthiness. He makes Ryu Busahaya look like an amateur.
"Shichan! Glad to see you~! Yeah, Tom's here. He decided to practice his stalking skills with us." he said before dropping his voice into a whisper. "He's quite bad at it, but let's humor him, ok?" he said before grabbing her and dragging her over to Renju. "Renchan, this is Shichan. Shichan, this is Renchan. You may have already met, I don't know. She's lost."

Interlopers were a problem. One he’d almost expected. Kanaye making an ass of himself and not shooing them away immediately.. Well, the former was another thing he’d come to expect, but the latter was certainly not. He’d given Kanaye a bit more credit than that. Undeserved, he decided as he stood up, flashed a hand over the bottom of his trousers to dust off any sticking moss/bark, and made his way over to the gathering crowd.

The grin he flashed Renju was humorless. His eyes were too wide and there were too many teeth bared; menacing was perhaps too kind a word. One strong hand found its way around the back of Kanaye’s neck and the other clamped down on one of Shiori’s slender shoulders; the white-haired boy peered down at Renju over his comrades shoulders.

“Senpai,” the grin grew wider as he started, “I’m sure you’re plenty capable of finding the path again by yourself.” The smile melted and twisted into something feigning apology and helpfulness, “But if you can’t, I could help you. I’m afraid everyone else is just too busy with our planning to wander..” He looked surprised at himself at the ‘slip‘, and let out a hollow chuckle. “Me and my mouth!” he tutted, then leaned forward to speak closer to her, voice dropped low enough to be furtive: “We’re just working on something for the school. Mandatory. It’s all very hush-hush, so we’d appreciate it if you forgot all about this.”

It may have been the tilt at the end of the statement, or the way his hand tightened into a death grip around Kanaye’s neck and produced visible pain as he spoke so casually to her, or the pervading earthy smell of damp, loose soil -- the perfect sort for graves -- that lent significance to his suggestion.

He showed her another hard, humorless grin.

Misaki noticed the look Reizo was giving Renji and quickly got up. "Sonozaki-sempai, I'm sorry for all of this. You'll have to forgive my classmate, he's a bit um...tired...from all the walking. Er...if you would like I could help you get back on the path...oh but I bet you want some lunch first right?"

Kiriko wasn't there yet, and they would need to start after they had eaten so there was no harm in this. Right? She smiled at Maeko to see if it was okay, and ignored the look that Reizo was probably giving to her.

"He's right, though."

Kiriko stepped forward from the path, apparently having arrived just in time to hear Reizo's speech. Her eyes flickered darkly over Reizo, specifically his hands which looked rather painful on her teammates. She looked quickly to Renju, pretending she hadn't seen anything questionable at all.

"You'll have to leave, Sonozaki-san." Kiriko stepped forward into the clearing and half-turned back to gesture at the path she'd just emerged from. "The camp is back that way, you can borrow my map if you want. If you need it, someone -" her eyes flitted over Reizo, Kanaye and Shiori, all clustered around her. She turned her head and nodded towards Keiichi, instead. "- can escort you."

She gave them a wide berth as she made her way over to Keiichi, taking her map out and handing it to him. "If you could go quickly, it would be best. We're already behind schedule."

He'd just gotten there two seconds ago, and they were already kicking him out?

The scene was already admittedly ugly, considering Reizo was trying to strangle Kanaye and the group itself was frazzled by the arrival of (yet again) an interloper at their meeting.

Keiichi looked at Kiriko for a few long seconds, before taking the map from her. In his mind, the damage was already potentially done. After all, if Renju knew enough of the people there, figuring out a way that they would all get along -- it made no sense.

Something would clearly be wrong -- though Keiichi doubted she'd be able to figure out what.

"Alright then," he finally said, forcing the bit of annoyance that he was feeling down and away. "I'm pretty sure I know the way even without the map. Shall we go, Sonozaki-san?"

Wow. Kanaye knew that Reizo was an asshole, but he was trying to choke him to death? And even worse, he was grabbing Shiori in much the same way, AND he was threatening a helpless young woman! Why, Kanaye could not stand for that!

So he kicked Reizo in the foot. He doubted that he could actually do much in a fight with the younger boy, but at least he could stop him from killing them. "E-eh, Reizo? Would you mind not killing me? I know it's how you solve your problems, but I'd rather keep my head, thanks."

Noticing Kiriko's opinion, Kanaye mentally facepalmed. Did they not know how suspicious they were acting? If Kanaye was in Renju's shoes, he'd immediately go back as soon as Keiichi was out of sight. Ah well, not his problem.

All of a sudden, there were people. Renju had started to correct Satou-senpai again exasperatedly, then left off to greet Ito-san (a friendly face she was glad to see), but then Satou-senpai had grabbed Wakanata-san--when had she gotten here?--and brought her over to introduce her. She managed a nervous smile and fussed with her glasses again. "Yes, I think we're already... acquainted..."

She trailed off as Shirai-kun appeared behind Satou-senpai and Wakanata-san. If her eyes could get any wider, they'd pop out of her head. Her heart felt like it was beating a mile a minute, and that smile was almost enough to make her fight-or-flight insticts kick in.

But when she saw his hand clamp around Satou-senpai's neck, something came over her that she hadn't expected, and that the logical part of her brain started to loudly berate her for. With a deep breath, Renju drew up to her full height and stared Reizo in the face, a small bead of sweat trickling down her brow. It was about as far from intimidating as you could get--she had to crane her neck to look up at Reizo, who even leaning down had at least thirty-some centimeters and fifty kilos on her, and her glasses gave her eyes an almost owlish look. The overall effect was more cute or comic than intimidating, really; the only thing that could have made it any worse was standing on her tiptoes, but even she realized how silly that would look.

Right as she was about to speak up in protest, however, some of the others descended upon the group, saving her from what would undoubtedly have been a terrible mistake. "I was just about to leave, I assure you," she said stiffly. "I don't want to impose on any of you, including you, Ito-san." She inclined her head slightly towards him. "I'll return the map as soon as I get a chance, so if I may..."

Kou walked through the forest, carrying a satchel in his right hand as he considered his next move. He had snapped images, bravely escaped the terror of the onsen, and found solitude on this trip. The others wanted him to come to this meeting. Well, when the 'team' needed his help and would otherwise pester him, they would get it. He liked getting unpleasant things over with quickly.

He smiled and hummed. He could have helped, but he knew turning up late meant there'd be less awkwardness... and less work. He did not want to help Reizo - someone who walked all over his feelings and enjoyed it.

The woods he was in were a sanctuary. He always had enjoyed walking. through forests at the base of mountains. But this meeting was… He had never associate with people, not before, not now, and he wasn’t interested. But he couldn't leave them in Paradise with all the danger it involved.

He looked into the clearing. A classmate was standing on the balls of her feet, her presence taller, and others were watching her display from the fringes of the grove. That was Retsu, and he knew she shouldn't be here. He knew things wouldn't go off without a hitch. They should do. He liked to get the job done.

"Hmn. What's going on?" He touched the bridge of his nose and put his satchel on the ground. "Why is Sonozaki-san here?"

"She got lost," was Keiichi's immediate reply to Kou, with a nod. "Welcome, Oubai-san."

He turned back to Sonozaki-san, fully intent on walking her back. "Really, it's no trouble at all. I can walk you back to camp. Wouldn't want someone to be alone in the woods."

Really, it was also an excuse for him to get away from the group. Right now, he wasn't particularly pleased with most of them, particularly the son-of-a-yakuza who was trying to run this like it was a meeting of the Yamato-gumi.

Keiichi clutched the map a bit tighter. Why did they all have to be so...unreasonable?

Reizo wasn’t sure what had just happened. Misaki had bumbled over in her characteristic annoying, blithe way she had, invited the girl he was quite plainly telling to go away to stay for lunch despite it being a waste of everyone‘s time, and then Kanaye had developed the incredible idea to stomp on his foot. All this happened while the small, bookish girl he’d been intending to scare off developed a backbone and goggled up at him ineffectually. It was like a Chihuahua staring down a mastiff.

He hadn’t been stunned in a long while, but there it was. When had he become someone they thought they could openly defy and walk away unscathed? It was true he wasn’t busting as many heads at school as he used to, but there was no need-- people barely looked him in the eye in the halls anymore.

He glared at sidelong at Misaki, turned his dirty look back to his tiny senpai as she turned to ask for the map, and finally let go of Shiori.

And then powered Kanaye’s face into the trunk of the nearest tree with a satisfied sigh. “Oi, Satou-kun,” he said, grabbing a fistful of the older boy‘s hair and tugging his head back sharply, “It ain’t nice to stomp on people’s feet.” The tree was wide and stout with bark just coarse enough to make it hurt when Kanaye’s face was forcibly ground against it. “I mean, what if somebody went and did that to you and crippled you? Our soccer star unable to play? That’d be terrible.”

“Wouldn’t that be terrible?” he asked the group as a whole, looking over his shoulder at them. He frowned at Kanaye and finally let him go as if finally realizing he couldn‘t speak and have his face grated against a tree at the same time, and cocked his head at a pensive angle as he puffed away on his dwindling cigarette. “Any of you got any ideas for our senpai on how he can keep that from happening?”

Oh, I think I know," he started, all semblance of humor draining out of his face, "you stupid fuckers learning that I’m not your fucking buddy."

There was no immediately obvious change in her facial expression as she watched Kanaye's face collide with the trunk of the tree, but she somehow appeared disturbed by what she was witnessing nonetheless. She waited a few seconds before she spoke, looking away from Reizo and the scene happening around him.

"Let's go back. Meeting cancelled." She spoke stiffly and quietly and moved towards Misaki as she did so, intending to steer her out of the line of fire before she could say anything. She'd caught the look Reizo shot her earlier and she wasn't certain that her friend knew better than to try for a lecture right now. "There's no point like this, we'll do it some other time."

She looked around to the rest of the group, waiting for either dispersion or some sort of agreement.

Kanaye couldn't really think. He was too busy getting ground against a tree by a yakuza member who was previously choking him. Apperantly, it was a scary enough sight so that absolutely no one did anything about it. And THEY wondered why he was annoying to them? Reizo is quite scary, he admits, but still, they could go get some help or something...
Flopping on the ground disgracefully he simply glared at Reizo pathetically and walked away, trying to find his dignity. He couldn't of course, but he tried.

Maeko watched as Reizo attacked Kanaye. It was different seeing it from an outside perspective and she felt like she should do something, but if she couldn't do anything about Reizo for the sake of all the people who visited the club to complain about him there wasn't much she was going to do for Kanaye. Served him right for being stupid. Only an idiot would taunt Shirai like that.

"Understood." She said, gathering up her things, not able to leave while people were still using her raincoat as a seat. That hadn't gone particularly well.

"You okay, senpai?" She asked Kanaye. She didn't sound particularly concerned, it was just to shut her conscience up.

Reizo had taken a new seat on the other side of the clearing and was eyeing them all with the lazy contempt characteristic of any top predator. He sat on a newfound log, hunched forward with one elbow resting on a knee and a lit cigarette dangling from the other hand, cherry red tip bright in the shade of the tree he was sitting under.

Apparently what he’d done to Kanaye had been effective. Most of them seemed to be milling about with the wind knocked out of their sails, and no one seemed to have the courage to look up and directly at his face any longer. The smile he showed the ground as he looked down to retrieve a new cigarette was sickeningly satisfied.

He watched them over the bobbing tip of his cigarette, sunlight dappling across him and wavering when the wind blew and rustled the boughs and leaves, eyes flinty and expression guardedly solemn. His lips were a hard line behind his cigarette, and sheets of smoke rolled out of the corner of his mouth and into the summer eddies.

Just another example to strengthen his theory.

“A real leader keeps order,” he said to the tall girl standing away from him as he flashed her a toothy grin, “keeps ‘em from getting themselves killed, keeps things diplomatic between the peons and the tyrants.” The grin faded with a sigh and was replaced with a derisive smile, “But you guys ain’t ever gonna have one of those. You won’t make it anywhere in your little game if this keeps up.”

Kiriko stood with her arms crossed around the centre of the clearing, trying to ignore Reizo's presence and ignoring the uncomfortable feeling blooming inside of her. She wanted to wait and ensure that everyone left without trouble before leaving herself - specifically, she was waiting to ensure that Misaki didn't pick this moment to engage with Reizo. She rubbed one of her arms.

She glanced back over her shoulder when Reizo speaked, blinking at him at first. Her expression settled slowly into a grave frown. Her eye dodged his - she'd meant not to look at his face at all, but found it difficult not to look at the mean scar stretching out from the corner of his mouth. She forced her gaze to meet his for a moment, and it didn't linger as she turned her head away, looking back down to the people filing away.

"I don't know why you're telling me that."
