School Trip, Day Two. (THE GREAT OUTDOORS)

Who: EVERYONE (npcs welcome)
What: Hiking, Meeting (Major Arcana Only), Setting up Tents, Cooking, MYSTERY FOOD X, King's Game, Sleepn (Possible bear-wrestling)
Where: IN A WOOD
When: Late May
Why: We like camping.

Aomori-sensei was waiting outside the hotel when everyone was awake, tapping a foot impatiently and looking at his watch. Ishino-sensei seemed somewhat nervous. He'd snapped at her when she'd tried to speak to him. He was always a lot more patient with the students and she'd hoped that finally going on this trip would improve his mood. She shook her head and smiled. It was her fault her colleague had to deal with all the reporters and so she had no right to complain when he was in a mood like this.

Tent arrangements:

Boys
3: Reizo/Toru/Akiyama
3: Kanaye/Yuuto/Kou
4: Gendou/Keiichi/Shin

Girls
3: Toshimi/Maeko/Shiori
3: Kojima/Renju/Mitsuko
4: Kiriko/Emi/Masami
4: Noriko/Misaki/Tori/Kozue

SETTING UP TENTS

Aomori was irritated about having to set up his colleague's tent but she had proven to be totally useless.

"There." He said, hammering in the last peg and turning to the students. "You all know how to put up a tent, right? Get to it unless you're intending to sleep outside."

KIRIKO'S GROUP

"Right then."

Kiriko had rolled her sleeves up, rushed over to the pile of school supplied tents and picked out the nicest one for her group, and had just finished surveying the campgrounds in search of the flattest piece of land. Having finally found a place she considered suitable, she dropped all of the materials in a jumbled heap at the center of the spot she'd claimed for her group, which besides being flat had a few trees as cover from the teacher's tent.

Kiriko dusted her hands together, smoothed out her skirt, and took a seat on a nearby rock.

"Hayashi-chan and I will supervise, you two can set the tent up."

Emi merely stood there with her bag as she watched Kiriko's impressive and efficient tent and placement choosing methods. She half expected the other to set up the tent herself, too, but instead she just plopped the equipment down.

There was a short moment with a fear of imminent labor. Thankfully, that was brushed aside with Kiriko's comment afterwards. She liked the idea of not having to set up the tent, but... as she looked over the other in her group, she wasn't entirely sure it was a wise decision. She highly doubted that girl would be able to do it. At least not correctly. The last thing she wanted was to have the tent cave in while they were sleeping.

"I dunno about that. Is there any way we can just talk some chumps to set it up for us?" She wasn't going to dirty her hands with the work if she didn't have to.

If Masami was put off by Kiriko's attitude, she didn't show it. Of course, it seemed like Emi was all too happy to go along with "supervising"... which would leave Masami with the task of actually setting up the tent.

Masami wasn't really an outdoors person, but she figured that if she could get on all her kendo equipment without help, she could possibly figure out how to set up the tent on her own... of course, some help would always be nice. Judging by Kiriko's attitude, there would likely be no convincing her to help out, and Masami wasn't sure how useful a middle schooler would be.

"OK, I'll see what I can do on my own. One of you two go see if you can get any help," Masami said as she began setting the stakes and the poles of the tent aside.

Kiriko reflected how nice it was to be paired with the more demure members of her class. With a faint smile, she turned to Emi.

"I think you're right. Who do we know that we could we sucker into doing it for us?"

"They gave you one of the older tents, but the principles are mostly the same. The poles not only act as a frame, but also keep the fabric of the tent taught. The stakes and ropes provide tension to keep the poles taught. It's not hard."

Thomas stepped out of the woods on the side opposite the tents and crossed his arms. He looked over the three women, and made a mental check to find out details about the one he didn't know. But he was willing to risk her seeing him. He looked toward Kiriko.

"We should talk."

Tom's voice snapped her back to earth, which she did not completely appreciate as she had still not solved the problem of who she should get to set her tent up for her. Frowning, she turned to him, one hand on her hip.

"And why should we?"

"Ah...Okay Aomori-sensei."

Misaki picked up the tent and looked it over, it seemed good enough and she smiled at her group. "Okay so who'd like to help with this one? Um...I've never really set one up before, but if it's anything like a recipe then it shouldn't be too hard to follow the instructions right?"

"No, it can't be... well, not all that hard...?"

Kozue sounded entirely the opposite of convinced as she looked over at the instructions that Misaki was holding, her eyes shifting occasionally to the fearsome tent itself. She'd never been camping before, much less set up a tent.

"It's pretty easy. Promise." Noriko replied, unraveling the tarp. "This needs to be set up first, though, it'll be the base and it'll help keep the bottom of the tent dry." she shook out the tarp before spreading it out.

"Are there any pegs or bars for the tent...?" she asked as she stood up, looking to Misaki.

Misaki searched around in the bag and said muffled, "I think there maybe....ah ha! Here they are!"

She pulled them out looking triumphant...and dirty. Handing them to Noriko she grinned, "Now what's the next step? Kozue-chan, do you have anything with you we can tie to the tent so we know which one is ours. There are a couple that looks the same, just in case some third years play a trick."

Although she was suspicious as to what kind of trick (and what kind of third years), Kozue nodded, and leaned down to open her bag. She was completely content to do things like this, and let the other three girls take care of the actual tent-setting-up-work.

"Here," she said, after a few moments of fishing, "What about this?" It was a long, bright colored hair ribbon, one of the ones that Kozue had bought to theoretically wear during tennis matches. Since she never played, she never wore it, though. "We can tie it on the front pole maybe?"

Having come from helping some first years clean up the dishes after supper, Tori knew she was running a little late. Hopefully the other girls hadn't already set up the tent! She'd feel so terrible if they did! Picking up the pace, Tori ran into the clearing where the group was still thankfully setting up the tent. Dropping her bag next to the other girls', Tori rolled up the sleeves of her uniform and grinned.

"Sorry I'm late!" she apologized. "Let me know what I can do to help, alright?"

Nevermind she knew nothing about setting up tents. But it couldn't be that hard! And besides, they could all figure it out ~*~together~*~. It'd be a real friendship-building exercise.

"Well ok then! Yuuto, you get the pegs. Kou, you get the hammer. I'll get the place and tent!" Kanaye said before dashing off towards the school tents. He grabbed a decent one before running back and putting it down, then laying beside it and waiting for his tent-mates.

Kouchisei had been staring at the tents when Kanaye spoke. They were an unflattering pile of synthetic fibre and poles and... did he really have to sleep in one? With Kanaye? In close quarters? Maybe if he hurried up and slept he wouldn't be subjected to awkward questions.

He returned with the hammer, holding it with such an expression it seemed he'd been considering using it on Kanaye's head.

...Tentsharing. Not that it was a particularly bad idea, considering the students had to share hotel rooms the night before, but the difference was that it was three bodies squished in a relatively small space and somehow, Yuuto wasn't in a mood for that.

Yuuto came back with a set of pegs in his hand, looking at the other two curiously.

Nodding at his two tent-mates, he smiled. "Well alright then, we have everything we need!" he said, suddenly jumping up and posing. Seconds later, however, he faltered. "Now all we have to do is figure out how to put it together..." Kanaye said sheepishly. "Either of you know how to put up a tent?"

"No."

Kou had a puzzled expression - he seemed to have no idea. The only things he knew were that the poles acted as supports and the material had to be waterproof. Neither of which he was sure of.

"I take it you do?"

Reizo's nerd brigade
[info]some_other_dog
2009-07-29 01:52 am UTC (link)
The yakuza boy frowned down at the paper he’d gotten earlier. It listed tent assignments and bunkmates, and he was unsure of how to take his placement. It was either a blessing or a curse to be bunked up with the two biggest nerds of 1-B, but he was leaning towards the former. They’d both scare easily, and maybe he could do something to get back at the taller one for wanting to see his special bits in his creepy ass dungeon.

He hmphed aloud and went about collecting the supplies. 20 minutes later or so (he took time out to disappear in the woods for a cigarette break) he was walking back towards a corner spot he’d selected with a bundle of poles and tarp in hand and two nerds in tow behind him. Once he reached the edge of the woods where he intended to set up camp he dropped the supplies down unceremoniously and looked back at the two expectantly.

“Survive tonight and you two might earn some social points at school.”

Toru gave Reizo something that could hardly be considered a glare on any standards; his heart was barely in it, for the most part.

"You're making us do all this?" He nudged the tent supplies with one foot. "Don't you think this job is more your line of work? I mean, we're just two weak nerds, right? I'm surprised you have faith in our ability to lift these..." His lack of enthusiasm for the whole trip and situation was quite apparent. Just his luck to get stuck in a tent with Reizo.

"And what do you mean by 'survive tonight?' Are you planning something?" This was matched with a look from Toru that may have at one point been intended as defiance, but was now something entirely pathetic. He looked over to Kiyoshi, hoping his classmate would have some kind of objection, too.

Kiyoshi was tired. He'd missed lunch, he'd spent two hours lost in the woods, he'd been chased by a bear, and he was pretty sure that he was having an allergic reaction to something he'd brushed up against in the forest. This is the stage where civility and decorum start to fall away, where men show what they're really made of without the stability of everyday life to hold them back.

Kiyoshi, being Kiyoshi, gave a submissive little half-nod and gathered up the poles. The thought of forming some kind of outcast alliance with Toru flitted through his mind, but he pushed it aside; it wouldn't reflect well on him to complain too much, and he was too tired to start what would probably be a losing battle with Reizo. Instead, he started sorting through the - stakes? supports? foundation? - poles, then realized that he didn't even know what he was looking at. "I, uh, don't really know how to set up a tent," he admitted, pretty much resigned to the fact that he was going to be stuck setting up at least half of it whether he knew how or not.

“No plan, I’m just worried you two might explode if forced to sleep on the ground,” he said, smile razor thin. He swept a look over the two boys and the supplies they were bound to struggle with and turned back towards the wood they were setting up beside. He disappeared behind a tree, peeked back around it to scan the grounds, and reemerged with a cigarette hanging out of a corner of his mouth. He’d taken care in selecting a patch of campsite that he could exploit to hide his cigarette habit, after all.

“Experience’s the best teacher,” he rumbled after a puff of smoke, eyes flicking here and there in search of a teacher until he seemed satisfied and he relaxed. He looked from boy to boy, lingered on Toru long enough to be uncomfortable, and then back down to the guts of the tent.

“You’d think two brainiac nerds would be able to put together a simple tent,” he mused distantly and leaned back against a tree.

"Just because I've never been camping before doesn't mean that it'll kill me," he retorted. It was a pretty weak retort, truth be told, because that smile of Reizo's could qualify as a murder weapon, and it had definitely just killed Toru's remaining confidence. He turned back to his fellow victim, who was confusedly going through the tent poles.

"I don't know either, but I suppose we're stuck in this situation..." Toru whispered to Kiyoshi, one-third resentful and two-thirds resigned. With this sentiment in mind, he began to set up the tent as best he could (which is to say not well at all), haphazardly sticking together poles, stakes, and tarps in a way that he dearly hoped would form a semblance of a tent. Every now and then, when Toru assumed Reizo wasn't looking, he'd glare at his back irritably, willing the yakuza boy to either fall down dead from a surprise lung cancer attack or have a sudden change of heart and help out for once. It unsurprisingly did not work, and the otaku uncomfortably noticed that his glares at Reizo were beginning to last just a little too long.

The obvious smell of cigarette smoke still lingered on Shin, but despite that he dutifully wandered over to Gendou and the second year he recognized as Ito. Though he wasn't intending on being a huge assist with setting up the tent, he figured he might as well show up and pretend he was doing something. Like... keeping track of everything. Yeah. Who knew when someone could just swoop in and steal their bags? Or their poles? It'd definitely be better if Shin watched their stuff.

Wishing he had a cigarette to fiddle with, even though he had just finished one before coming over to the group, Shin pursed his lips thoughtfully.

"So~" he hummed to himself, wondering where to begin. For Ito's benefit, he introduced himself. "I'm Matsumoto Shin, a third year. And don't worry, guys: I'm willing to take on the dangerous task of guarding our stuff while you two set up the tent."

Here, he grinned cheekily. So much for making his performance believable. And here he was thinking he'd actually try to convince them!

Gendou was already trying to figure out how to get Ito to do 90% of the work, and it only helped when Matsumoto came over. Smiling brightly he welcomed their tentmate.

"Ah Shin-san, how are you doing this evening," he banntered then grinned in a way that should have sent warning to Shin that nothing good could come of having Gendou as his tent mate. "Ah...I see, well then...you better be able to lug things around. Since you're going to be so kind as to watch our things, and well we can't have you wandering off to fetch stuff for us, you'll just have to take it with you. Am I not right Ito-kun...Yes perfectly right."

He tossed Shin the tent, "There, you can start by opening it up. I will read directions, then...after Ito-kun, puts the poles in the right spots, you can put the tarp up. Now would you be so kind as to fetch the nails?"
