School Trip, Day Two. (THE GREAT OUTDOORS)

Who: EVERYONE (npcs welcome)
What: Hiking, Meeting (Major Arcana Only), Setting up Tents, Cooking, MYSTERY FOOD X, King's Game, Sleepn (Possible bear-wrestling)
Where: IN A WOOD
When: Late May
Why: We like camping.

Aomori-sensei was waiting outside the hotel when everyone was awake, tapping a foot impatiently and looking at his watch. Ishino-sensei seemed somewhat nervous. He'd snapped at her when she'd tried to speak to him. He was always a lot more patient with the students and she'd hoped that finally going on this trip would improve his mood. She shook her head and smiled. It was her fault her colleague had to deal with all the reporters and so she had no right to complain when he was in a mood like this.

Tent arrangements:

Boys
3: Reizo/Toru/Akiyama
3: Kanaye/Yuuto/Kou
4: Gendou/Keiichi/Shin

Girls
3: Toshimi/Maeko/Shiori
3: Kojima/Renju/Mitsuko
4: Kiriko/Emi/Masami
4: Noriko/Misaki/Tori/Kozue

If Masami was put off by Kiriko's attitude, she didn't show it. Of course, it seemed like Emi was all too happy to go along with "supervising"... which would leave Masami with the task of actually setting up the tent.

Masami wasn't really an outdoors person, but she figured that if she could get on all her kendo equipment without help, she could possibly figure out how to set up the tent on her own... of course, some help would always be nice. Judging by Kiriko's attitude, there would likely be no convincing her to help out, and Masami wasn't sure how useful a middle schooler would be.

"OK, I'll see what I can do on my own. One of you two go see if you can get any help," Masami said as she began setting the stakes and the poles of the tent aside.

Kiriko reflected how nice it was to be paired with the more demure members of her class. With a faint smile, she turned to Emi.

"I think you're right. Who do we know that we could we sucker into doing it for us?"

(posting with permission.)

"They gave you one of the older tents, but the principles are mostly the same. The poles not only act as a frame, but also keep the fabric of the tent taught. The stakes and ropes provide tension to keep the poles taught. It's not hard."

Thomas stepped out of the woods on the side opposite the tents and crossed his arms. He looked over the three women, and made a mental check to find out details about the one he didn't know. But he was willing to risk her seeing him. He looked toward Kiriko.

"We should talk."

Tom's voice snapped her back to earth, which she did not completely appreciate as she had still not solved the problem of who she should get to set her tent up for her. Frowning, she turned to him, one hand on her hip.

"And why should we?"

"Thanks for the advice, senpai," Masami said. She didn't know much about Tom, but he seemed more knowledgeable about tents than anyone else in the immediate area. Judging by the way he had addressed Kiriko, maybe it would be in vain, but Masami decided to try asking for his help anyway.

"Might I ask for a hand in this? With your help, senpai, I should be able to have this tent set up pretty quickly..."

Kiriko glanced over to Masami and a lightbulb went off.

"Yeah, Sagaki, why don't you give her a hand? You seem to know a lot about it, it won't take long. Then maybe we can talk."

"Well no... I..,"

Tom's eyes glanced toward the trees blocking them from view, then back at Kiriko. And let out a defeated breath.

"Alright then."

He moved forward, then kneeled down grabbing the tent.

"Okay, the fly goes down first, then put the poles together, they shouldn't be hard to figure out. The stakes go last."

Emi was about to suggest that they had to know someone who was enough of a push over to do it. Or at least there had to be someone she could trick into doing it. Then Tom appeared. That was easy enough and she still didn't have to do anything at all.

"Good luck with that," she said with a shrug and a smile, taking a seat on the ground.

Tom rolled his eyes as he put the poles together and pulled them up into the right position. He nodded toward the other women.

"Hold these for me while I do the stakes."

He grabbed the stakes and quickly slipped them into the loops at the bottom of the tent, pushing them in with his foot.

When he stood up he grabbed the last piece of the tent, the fly that Justin accidentally mislabeled in a previous post, and slipped the last pole into it. He flipped it on top of the tent, and tied it in place, then finally grabbed the lines and quickly tied them in.

"You need to keep the lines tight, it keeps the fly away from the tent, other wise if it rains and the two get stuck together it'll leak inside."

Tom stood finally having finished the tent set up and looked at the other women, then finally his gaze fell on Kiriko.

"Now?"

She nodded, looking considerably more amiable than she had when he first arrived, and motioned him over. She didn't walk too far, only ten paces away or so, but it was far enough to put them out of earshot. When she stopped, she folded her arms over her chest and looked expectantly at him.

"Well?"

Tom paced back and fourth for a moment. He seemed almost... nervous.

"The meeting... didn't go well."

Okay that much was obvious. Tom sighed, crossed his arms and looked at her.

"Alright, so the cracks in your team are obvious."

He ran his fingers through his hair, and stopped pacing, and looked at her.

"They trust you, they listen to you. Do you still wonder why I made you the President of the club?"

"It's not my team," she protested. "And Shirai pointed out just how well I'm keeping the group together."

She sounded horribly bitter about the whole thing and was chewing the inside of her cheek while staring moodily off into the distance. It wasn't that she didn't want the responsibility, but it just sort of annoyed her that people only seemed to defer to her whenever they needed somebody to blame.

"What are you talking to me about it for?"

Tom quirked an eyebrow.

"Even after Shirai's display when you told them to disperse they did. You took control when you arrived. Hell if you had arrived sooner you could probably have prevented the whole..."

Tom cut himself off. His voice had gotten more and more excited as he spoke, there was almost... admiration in his voice. His hand went up to the back of his neck.

"I just... I think someone needs to take control, and guide them. A leader needs to be respected as well as liked.

And Shirai... if he continues on the way he's been going on, he may become more of a danger to your team then an asset. And by your team I mean the group you belong to, not the one you're in charge of. I think..."

He shook his head.

"You don't care what I think."

Kiriko's eyes narrowed. It was less that she disliked what he was saying and more than she disliked the way he was saying it.

"If I didn't care at all, I wouldn't bother to engage you at all. I don't see what you're getting at right now, though. Don't beat around the bush. What do you want me to do?"

Tom turned back and looked at her.

"You should be in charge. If you stepped up they would accept it, they would listen to you. Even Shirai would listen. The responsibility already hangs on your shoulders.

I really, really don't want to be in charge of your group. I don't..."

He let out a breath again, it was a sigh. His left arm reached to wrap around his right arm, and he looked away slightly.

"I don't even... belong here. I don't do this whole... thing."

He waved his hands, the pauses seemd to come as he was trying to find the right words, and failing.

"The point is; the important choices... we don't get to pick when they come, the opportunity to stand never comes when we ask for it, it comes when we need to stand. The others... they have already placed the responsibility on you. You can chose to accept it, or try and shake it off."

He let out a final breath, and definitely didn't look at her with his final remark.

"I would listen to you."

Kiriko's eyes narrowed only further. He seemed to be yammering on about leadership, but he was acting like boys usually did when confessing an ill-concieved crush and her immediate, instinctive reaction was to cut him down as quickly and efficiently as possible. She knew that wasn't the case - what he was saying had nothing to do with that - but what he was saying sounded like just as much of a waste of time.

"So what?" she snapped. "I'm not just going to declare myself the leader now because you think it's a good idea. That's something that should be discussed with everyone. You don't want to be in charge of our group? The way I remember it, that's not how you acted - and the only thing you ever said about it was that you don't really need us, like we were lucky to have you along no matter how much you disturbed everybody else.

"I don't care about how you feel about belonging. I'm not running a damn counselling service, Sagaki, don't try to drop your baggage or whatever on me. You say you'll listen to me? Fine: Stop acting like such a creep."

She glowered at him. Who was he to talk to her about shirking responsibility?

"You're just in all of this for a laugh, to make yourself feel important, right? I don't think you're anyone to be talking to me about important choices."

She huffed and flicked her eyes over him, still glaring, but folded her arms over her chest and stood silent for a minute, chewing the inside of her cheek. Perhaps, objectively, it had been a slight overreaction, but she couldn't really bring herself to care. She didn't understand what he was playing at and it left her far more confused and annoyed than she already had been post-meeting.

"We'll talk about leadership tomorrow, Sagaki," she concluded.

Tom's expression remained neutral. His original expectation of Ikeda was accurate. He didn't need to pretend as much when dealing with her, or keep her at arms length. With how much she hated him, she would do that herself. He felt thankful that most of the persona users felt that way.

"I said I didn't need you, because... well... just as much as none of you need me. I left you in Ishinomori's dungeon because I thought you were all capable. I don't think you're team is any worse then I am and I wanted to make sure... I needed to make sure that none of you thought I was going to rely on you."

He took a step back from her, and looked away.

"As far as my motives... I'm doing this because..."

Tom ran his fingers through his hair, and looked genuinely sad for just a moment. But the moment past. Tom could open up some, but he was still unwilling to let anyone see beneathe the mask, and Kiriko certainly didn't care.

"Because when when I don't speaks up good people die, and bad people get away with it."

Tom waved his hand dismissively, and turned around.

"Whatever, it's not important. You want to talk tomorrow, then the talk can be had tomorrow."

"Spare me your knight-in-shining-armor complex. For all I know, you are 'bad people.'"

She didn't wait for anything more than that, but rather pivoted on her heel and stormed over to where her group was, slipping inside the tent to inspect and ensure that it had been set up properly.
