Three key quotes that everyone should know and take to heart. Because there are far to many people who think themselves smart, or 'wise', on this island, yet close themselves off to learning anything new about anyone or anything.

"The fool doth think he is wise, but the wise man knows himself to be a fool."
-William Shakespeare

“To know that you do not know is the best. To pretend to know when you do not know is a disease.”
-Lao-Tzu

"The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing."
-Socrates

They all three say close to the same thing. And all three men knew what they said to be true about themselves.

My question is, are you going to die the fool? Or will you become wise before you die?

It's simply a plea for people who consider themselves wise to open up their minds, and stop shutting doors. Or realize the attempt to open one door doesn't mean they have to slam another shut after setting fire to the bridge behind it less than a month after the bridge had been built.

I don't consider myself wise or important, I'm just trailer trash from south Alabama. But I'm just... Running into a brick wall while trying to do right by other people. It's hard not to just write the 'brick walls' off as a lost cause, and knowing they'll be gone tomorrow. Tomorrow being any day that isn't today, rather than... You're smart I don't know why I'm explaining that part.

I might contract a wall with a bunch of good quotes on it. You've been around a long time, haven't you Mister Gray? Would you mind helping me collect a few?

I don't really care what you consider yourself, nor do I think the State you're from has any weight on the definition of your character. What I do think, is that you're using quotes that mean "listen" to speak.

And the only brick wall I see here is yours.

Coming from a man that doesn't seem to see very far from his own nose, I don't see how you would even see my brick wall.

Have a good stay here Mister Gray.

Your response to someone who dares disagree with you is to dismiss them entirely - how are you doing anything but proving me right?

"La la la - not listening!! GOOD DAY TO YOU" is pretty fucking evident of an unwillingness to listen to others if I've ever seen.

And all I suggested was that you shouldn't generalise about where you're from, or judge others - lest you be judged.

Well.

Now she can raise her hand when she's asked if she feels personally victimised by Dorian Gray. I was only trying to suggest that listening is a better tactic than misrepresenting quotations to disprove your own argument.

Actually I dismissed you the moment you got here. You see, I've read portrait of Dorian Gray. I only answered you in attempt to be polite. And learned that I was correct in dismissing you.

I simply decided the opinion of someone as two dimensional as you are, unworthy of my time, because you've been here all of five seconds and you're already reading between lines that aren't there. And you think yourself witty in doing so.

And I offered you a good stay, because I have no reason to speak to you any farther.

Darling, it doesn't surprise me that you misinterpreted my book like you misinterpreted those quotes - if you don't understand the complexities of living without perceived guilt or accepted remorse; of hedonism and the importance of being earnest and living for pleasure without impediment or judgement - I don't know what to tell you.

It rains on the moral and amoral alike - it's learning that there is no difference that's the real trick, and until you do - as those quotes said, you know nothing.

Basing your opinion of me on what you thought was true it, officially the highest form of intolerance and ignorance.

Actually I didn't misinterpret your book, or the quotes, you're just reading it that way. Because like so many people you see lines that aren't there. And then look for the things between them.

I see no point in arguing with a man that either doesn't have the ability, or the want, to feel guilt or remorse. It would be like talking in circles, you might enjoy it but it gives me a headache, and I feel rather stabby when I get a headache. If not bitey, clawy and bonecrunchy.

Also, I don't feel the need to explain myself to someone who's been here five seconds, someone who either doesn't know or doesn't care about the plight of the rest of the island. So lets put things simply, you're not my tea and crackers, sweetheart, and lets move on. If you were, I would have talked to you before now. I'm neither saying your way of life is wrong, or that you need to change it, I'm just saying I'm not interested.

...Yet you expect someone else to explain themselves to you or you call them out as a jackass and a fool -- and tell me you know me better than I know myself. How is that anything but the same willing ignorance you're complaining about in others?

Again, reading things into what I say really gets pretty boring for me. Nowhere did I say 'explain yourself'. To anyone. Nor did I claim to know you better than you know yourself. But I will tell you, you're coming off pretty foolish considering you don't know what's going on.

Tell me, Mister Gray, this feminine thing you do, where you put information into other peoples words that isn't there: Is it something you always do? Or am I simply lucky?

No, I just dislike that all the coy attempts that have men trained to see things that aren't there. Especially when they really aren't there. To me The means The, and it should stay The. There shouldn't be kittens hiding in the letters. It makes talking to people harder than it really should be.

It's The Picture of Dorian Gray. You're thinking of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. It's an easy mistake to make. But harder if you've actually read the book. Either way, allow me to make an important distinction: while the picture was two-dimensional, that doesn't mean that the individual depicted was.

In any case, you would be wise to note that your argument has devolved into the logical fallacy known as an Ad hominem attack, presumably because you didn't like his point, but found yourself unwilling or unable to counter it with logical arguments or salient facts. But I suppose in your defense, it would be difficult to argue against it, as you have now repeatedly demonstrated that you are quite unwilling to hear what he has to say, and seem to think you already know better. Than Dorian, yes, but also than the specific people whom you think are not sufficiently open-minded, by criteria you have yet to disclose.

Which was, more or less, his original point.

Actually no, I was thinking because there is a 'Portrait' a painting, rather than a photograph that it was the 'The Portrait of Dorian Gray'. I read it sixteen years ago, I imagine there's a little room for error. I've never read A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. He might be interested that said painting is actually here, by the way. It's been here since November, or that's what Cutler's notes say.

Unwilling would be more truthful, I had a very strong, and very long argument typed out. But part of me remains the lady my grandmother tried to teach me to be, so rather than argue with someone pointlessly, I simply decided it would be easier and less of a headache to simply bow out, simply because he felt the need to read into what I was saying rather than read what I was actually saying.

I'm not your typical woman, Mister Stark, I say no when I mean no and yes when I mean yes. Fine is still dangerous territory though.

And as for the 'Specific people whom I think are not sufficiently open-minded', I have had fingers pointed at me in the very worst way possible. In the way that meant almost sure death, once I got tired of being stubborn and trying to escape it. Good or bad I'm not going to point fingers or list names, on pain of death, because it was done to me. The people who aren't sufficiently open-minded, know who they are, if it was your business, or his for that matter, you would know who they are. And if what I said made others think I was speaking to them, or about them... Well that's hardly my fault, especially if I haven't bothered to speak, or share words with them in any form.

Where is the portrait? I would like to pick it up and put it somewhere safe.

But don't you see what you're actually saying? You're not saying no when you mean no and yes when you mean yes. You're saying, "anyone who doesn't realize that they know absolutely nothing is an idiot," while also saying, "I know enough to tell certain people that they know nothing, and that they should behave differently." You're saying everyone is an idiot, but holding yourself above this as someone who knows that others are idiots.

You actually have bothered to speak and share your words with them. With a passive-aggressive, indirect callout in which you pointed fingers at everyone but yourself. The way you said this, and the things you've since said to Dorian, indicate that you have no interest in opening your own mind.

You stated, explicitly, that you wrote Dorian off the moment he got here, without even speaking to him, based on something you read in a book. What is that, if not prejudice? You can say that it was a book about him, and you'd be correct, but that doesn't mean it tells his whole story. It doesn't tell you who he is now, or who he's trying to be. You also made some pretty broad statements about women, men, and people from your home state in defending your point.

The only person in this post who has been making unfair judgements, Miss Walker, is you.

Now why would I tell you something like that?

Actually I'm saying exactly what I said. I'm not spelling something out that's not there. I'm not raising myself up above anyone. I'm not even saying "they" should change. The only thing that may be written in the original words that isn't exactly there, is the plea to open their mind. Not one single person that answered this post was in my mind when I wrote it.

I said the first young man was, but that was a blatant lie, because he gave me reason to attack him. As he attacked someone I happen to care about, someone one that did little to him besides state that she spoke a language that he didn't. I felt the need to be a bitch, and knock him down a peg or two.

I never said anywhere that I wasn't closed off. I know I close myself off. Once you're here a little while you'll understand a little better why I do. But, I will say, that Mister Gray said himself that he was a man that lived without guilt or remorse. Why would I want to share myself with someone like that, let alone want to learn anything about him? I'll be the first to admit that I'm often a glutton for punishment, but I'm not that much of a glutton. I'm not going to put myself out to someone who is more likely to reticule me, as he has done when I simply tried to release myself from conversation with him, for my trouble.

There's not a soul in this place that judges themselves more harshly than I do. In fact Elladan, and Mister Gray both chided me for doing just that. I wasn't defending myself I was simply stating what I see as fact about myself. I don't see myself as wise, what wisdom do I have to impart to do so?

But as through with him as I tried to be, I think I'll depart from conversation with you, as well. You both will read into things what you wish to, no matter what I say. I could be saying something as simple as the grass is green, and I'm sure there would be some quarrel with it. There's little point in trying to change an opinion that wont be changed, and so I'm not going to talk in circles with you anymore. Have a good stay here Mister Stark.

It doesn't matter why you close yourself off. The point, really, is that you were being closed off while encouraging others to be open. Now you're telling me that you have reasons to close your mind, but that doesn't matter. Everyone who closes their mind thinks that they are right to do so.

I understand that you are a mutant. Mutants have gone through hell, and I get that. I won't comment on your experiences with that except to say that I know they were hellish, and I'm sorry you had to experience them. But your bad experiences don't make you immune to being shitty in the same ways. Magneto being a classic example.

And you still won't address the issues. All you're talking about is why I should trust your word, and why I shouldn't trust his. None of this supports any argument. You're not even arguing with me, really. You're just telling me you can't be wrong because your life was sadder than his. I mean, my dad didn't love me. Does that mean I can never be prejudiced or wrong about anything because something shitty happened to me once?
