Forgive me if this is too personal a question for such a public space, but: has anyone else experienced a change in their dreams after arriving here?

Maybe you need to dream more, to see how it feels when it stops being surprising.

Yes, but not messages from anyone specific. They grow from our connection to our homeland, to the will of our ancestors and the spirits which surround us. I don't know if that makes sense. This isn't my first language, and so much of it really is about connection, and intuition.

It sounds like magic, though mages ought to be wary of contact with spirits in their dreams or otherwise.

I don't think it's just magic, because when I was cut off from my magic, I could still dream. Magic is a Kordalan's birthright, and the spirits surround us whether we listen to them or not. Spirits of air and fire, of rock and metal. A priestess could tell you better. What is there to be wary of?

Where I came from, demons would seek to tempt, trick and make deals to come across the fade and into our world. They tended to pick mages for their targets so they might possess their bodies and do harm.

Oh, how terrible! That must be so frightening for them. There are no demons in Kordala, but people from outside feared magic anyway.

Magic can be terrifying, I don't blame anyone for fearing it, especially those who have it.

I have never had any reason to be afraid of it. The same can't be said for my enemies, but that is no fault of mine.

Having that much power and knowing what terrible things could happen to the people around you if you didn't have control doesn't frighten you?

If I lived in the place you come from and thought a demon might possess me and do harm to the people around me, I would probably be very frightened, I agree. But in Kordala, the people who have done the great harms are those without magic.

One does not need magic to do great harm where I come from, but my calling is to help those with magic not harm themselves or others.

How do you do that? Do you fight against these demons before they can cause harm?

We do fight demons, yes. We also help mages learn to be strong in the face of demons. We keep them safe from physical threats and if needed we can counter, dissipate and block magic.

That sounds admirable. It is all with their agreement, I take it? Forgive my suspicion, but in my homeland, 'keeping safe' wasn't always as it seemed.

Most agree, especially as our protection not only guarantees food, shelter and a community but also training in their magic. But there are cases where persuasion is necessary. In the most extreme of cases we may have to sever a mage's magic, but it is usually a last resort. There have been difficulties recently, however.

I see.

The men who kept me in a cell told me that I was lucky to have food and shelter too. And my life, given that the rest of my family were slaughtered. They waited until two years into the occupation before they started severing magic. We were being difficult in fighting back.

I'm sorry you've suffered, but your situation and the situation of the mages who were under my care were different.
