Hello. I’m Mark Darcy.

Apparently I am here to stay for an indefinite amount of time. (Join the club, I know.)

I'm Abigail but most call me Abi. Not that there's many people here, honestly. A new face is always welcome.

How long have you been here, Abi?

Oh god, uh... a few months maybe? Days bleed into one another here since there's really not much in the way of fun. I should've kept a calendar or some chalk at least.

How are you coping thus far?

Like an inmate? Lovely.

About as expected, I think. Definitely topping the list of ‘strangest places I’ve woke up’ though.

I'm being dramatic, I know. It's not that bad once you get used to it.

Really? Hadn't cracked my top three. If you need anything, don't hesitate to call on me.

Stockholm syndrome, great.

Now you’re just taking the piss. I don’t know that I need anything as such, but what on Earth do people do around here all day?

Only 8% of kidnapping victims actually experience Stockholm Syndrome. I might actually be in the 8%, fuck knows.

Good to know someone's got a sense of humour apart from me. Eh most day it is slow and boring and kinda shit but we get these weird Doctor Who doors to other worlds and I think I might legitimately be insane.

Well, yes, but it is a very slippery subject on which to get an accurate statistic. I've already seen the (perceived) inability to escape, isolation... well, it's space, so yes. The other conditions are maybe rather overly intense and personal questions for someone I just met digitally. So we'll stick with fuck knows.

That is not often said about me. Makes me worry about just how dour everyone is about to be. Right... other worlds? Like what? And it's fine, if you're insane then so am I. Or it's mass hysteria.

It's all very Kubrick up here, to be honest. You do get the impression that it's zoo-like but if I am an exhibit here, it's a happy one. At least so far, might go on a rampage or something one day and they'll shoot me down with planes from the Empire State Building.

Mass hysteria, I hadn't considered that. It might explain the door to a world from Star Wars that just happened. And Cuba twice, those were awesome. Not sure how I'd fare if a door to the Alps opened up. Life's an adventure and all that bullshit, but I hate the cold.

Christ, that was a lot of pop culture referencing in one paragraph. I'm glad you're happy, even if it is a bit mental.

Okay, you're going to have to run that one by me again - a door to a star wars world? What, is it like a theme park? Or it just reminds you of a Star Wars?

Oh, come on, but skiing is great, and the views are like a Christmas card, and you get to warm up again in a chalet with hot chocolate, or wine.

Not sure I'd call a movie from 1933 pop culture exactly but I get the meaning. We keep waiting for people to go insane through lack of stimulation but it's apparently not happened yet.

No, I mean a world from Star Wars. A real version of a fictional planet. Told you, fucking amazing and insane.

Not a lot of skiing in Boston, last I checked. But I can definitely do the chalet in the snow with a hot toddy. Leave the skiing to the experts who don't break their ankles walking down stairs normally.

And the Kubrick. How'd you know I didn't mean the Peter Jackson one? (I did not.)

Right. Okay. What the fuck? And where is this Magic Door?

That's the best bit anyway, arguably. Where would you like a door to open to?

1968? Yes, very modern, incredible contemporaneous. Nobody ever means the Peter Jackson version, do they? You can't top the original.

Honest to God, my sense of direction is so poor that I am not entirely sure. But I tend to just ask for help when one opens and I soon find my way. We really should try and map this place.

Oh fuck. Shanghai, Taiwan, Sydney, Oslo, Paris. Fuck I'd love to go to Paris. Home. Maybe one day. Just not skiing unless I can get messy drunk and make snow angels.

I would pretend to know anything about actual pop culture, but I’ll save myself the embarrassment, I think. Sorry. I know that would’ve been a laugh. This is when I need Bridget

Okay, do you mean you and me ‘we’, or some other person should map it and give us a shout when they’re done? I hope it’s the latter, because as much as i want something to do, I don’t think an cartography is going to be my ‘thing’.

Ah, you’ve got the wanderlust. I think I’ve been spoiled of Paris what with the tunnel. I would like to see more of the others in a less stressed state. If that’s a thing that ever happens. As for the snow angels - who’s going to stop you? Well, except security I suppose. They might. Health and safety gone mad.

Only if it were funny, then I'd laugh. But you got my references and that's honestly more impressive than some people round here.

Oh fuck, no, I would make a really shit cartographer as well, zero patience and no sense of direction. I meant the hundred or so people currently inhabiting this place. You'd think we'd have one by now.

Maybe, hard to not when you've never been able to afford to travel anywhere your entire life. Is Paris as good as I think it is? And nobody can stop me from making drunken snow angels on the Alps. I am proud to uphold the reputation for brash, obnoxious Americans in Europe.

Really? That's a bit of a worry, but I'll take it.

You would. Someone should definitely do something about that. Not me - but someone.

Paris is definitely worth a visit. A lot of it is people trying to sell you plastic Eiffel towers, and it's really very busy, but you know, it's Paris. Nice to see the Monets, take a walk along the river, eat a baguette, that kind of thing.

Oh, good, I'm glad someone's got that covered, it's a reputation that it would be a real shame to lose. I'll tut loudly and drink tea, uphold my end of the stereotype.

It's likely more of a comment on my sense of what's funny than anyone else's humour.

Is it really touristy? My vacations were usually spent working so I'm kinda bored with the massive amounts of free time. Maybe it doesn't matter if anywhere is touristy anymore. Nice to know your culinary adventures include baguettes though. Next you'll be daring and try a croissant.

The American reputation is proudly earned, thanks. Though I'm meant to be programmed to hate the English since I'm from Boston and my ancestors likely chucked all your tea in the river.

What do you find funny? Or is that too broad a question?

It is really touristy, yes. Or at least, there are parts of it that are really touristy, as you'd expect - Eiffel tower, Louvre, Arc de Triomphe, that kind of thing. But you can look at the tower from a distance, it's nicer that way. It's a huge place, there are lots of parts that aren't total capitalist nightmares, too. A croissant? You're wild! What a thought!

Oh my God, and you say it without even flinching. Think of the tea!

I love a clever pun, don't you? Though, as a brash and obnoxious American, my humour also goes to the lewd and bawdy. What about you? I think you're more of the West Wing type.

In my mind, areas become tourist traps for a reason, though. It doesn't make them any less beautiful just because a hundred other people think so too. Though one of the best - and only - vacations I went on was to Washington D.C. and I stayed out of the political landscape, literally.

Never think of tea. Think of coffee, steak for breakfast, and the stars and stripes of old Glory. We won in the end, after all.

A clever pun is good, but I’m not very good at thinking of them on the spot. It’s a real talent, I think. I don’t know what West Wing humour would be like.

No, I agree with that. It’s not that I think places have to be completely rural or secret to be worth something. I’d be a pretty crap Londoner for a start. It’s more... not being able to just enjoy the sights, because someone is forcing a snow globe in your face, or taking your photo and then demanding you pay them for it, and so on. Busy with tourists, fine. Capitalist nightmare? Bit grating, but you deal with it. I’m quite good at looking stern enough for them not to ask.

What was so good about Washington DC? (That sounded a lot more accusational than I meant it.)

Depends what you mean by “won”, to be fair. Was the prize worth it, or a bit like ‘winning’ a prize at the carnival.
