Who: Gwendolyn Montgomery and Adrian Pucey
When: Thursday evening
Where: Adrian's
What: Jealousy rearing its ugly head
Warnings/Rating: NC17

Gwendolyn was annoyed. No, annoyed didn't quite cover just how she was feeling at the moment. One of her good friends went out to dinner with the man she was well, involved with. She was annoyed with Astoria, too, but mostly she was upset with him. After all, he should know better. It was not right at all that he should be having it on with her friends. He claimed to love her, so what exactly was he doing try to romance another woman and call her princess. She never got cute nicknames like that!

Marching up to his front door, Gwendolyn knocked loudly then leaned back a little to cross her arms so that she could glare at him properly when he finally opened the door. Adrian needed to know that he really should not be seeing her friends. The Weasley girl was one thing, and it was gross, but this was so much worse. When the door opened, she gave him her best annoyed look.

"So, how was it? Have fun with your princess?"

"I don't know." Gwendolyn said, looking down at her plate a she pushed the food around with her fork. She glanced up briefly and toward Adrian. "I came here to yell at you, to because I was angry with you, Astoria too, but it was easier to yell at you and then..." She shrugged. "I wanted to stay." She pushed her food about a bit more. "Maybe I like your company." Why did he always have to over-examine everything. Couldn't it just be okay to leave things the way they were?

He nodded. Maybe she liked his company? For the first time since he'd left for Hogwarts, Ade found himself feeling a bit choked up, like he might cry and he stood up, not willing to let her see how much her playing with him was affecting him. He took his plate to the sink and dropped it in.

"You do know how fucking unfair this is, right?"

Gwendolyn sighed as Adrian stood. She bit her lower lip, no longer hungry and sat back in her chair. "I know." She said softly, shaking her head as she stood. Maybe he was better off without seeing her at all. They shouldn't have started this all back up again and it was all her fault. She clearly couldn't give him what he wanted, and whilst for a bit she'd thought maybe he deserved it, but the most time they spent together and really after Christmas, she was pretty sure he didn't. Maybe she just wasn't made to love anyone anymore.

"You're right." She sighed and bit her lower lip to keep the tears that were threatening to form. She wasn't good for him, and all she was doing was hurting him. "You'll better off without me. I'm sorry - I'll just go." She added as she started back to the living room. What was the point?

Fuck! He blew it, again. Maybe she was right, maybe everyone was right. Maybe he didn't deserve her, after all, if he couldn't even get through one hour without starting the same old shit. Maybe, this time he should just be a man and let her go.

Like that was going to happen...

"I'm not, though, am I?" he said, following her into the hall. "I've spent the last six years doing everything I can to forget about you, but you don't leave. You're in me, and I wish I could get you out, because if fucking hurts, Gwen. It doesn't matter if you're here or not, it still hurts."

Gwen stopped as Adrian followed her. Turning around she looked at him. Despite everything that happened, and all of the years apart, Gwen still couldn't stomach the thought that she was hurting him. She cared about him, in an odd way, but she was sure that wasn't what he needed or deserved.

"I'm sorry." She said again, eyes welling up as she looked away for a moment. "I wish I could make it better. I wish I could just say I love you, Ade, but I can't. I don't think I can love anyone." The tears slid down her cheeks as she sniffed. "I've tried so hard to push myself away from those emotions. I didn't want to love anyone, because that just hurt too much. It was just easier not to get attached." She shrugged her shoulders and looked at the ground. "I'm broken, Ade, and I don't think I can be fixed."

When she was done, it hit him that it was all his fault. It wasn't about punishing him for hurting her, it was that he'd hurt her so much that she was still broken. That's what Pansy had been trying to tell him. He closed the distance between them, but rather than kiss her, he just wrapped his arms around her.

"Shhhh...it's okay. Don't listen to me, I'm just an arsehole, who drinks too much and can't just shut up and enjoy your company," he said.

When Adrian wrapped his arms around her body, she tensed for a moment before relaxing against his chest. Why was this so difficult? Why couldn't she just love him?

"I'm sorry." She whimpered against his chest. "I'm so sorry." Gwen repeated, her body shaking now. She should just let him go, but she couldn't. "You're not an arsehole. I'm just a cold-hearted bitch." She whimpered again, her voice muffled by his chest. She did care about him, that much she knew, and it was just hard to realise how much she was hurting him by not being who he wanted.

One thing was for certain; knowing Gwen was opening him up to more emotion than he'd ever had to deal with before. Love, rejection, depression and now, guilt. He'd taken the most perfect girl he'd ever met and turned her into someone that thought she was damaged beyond repair. He pulled back, looking down at her face, and cupping her cheek with one hand.

"You feel warm to me," he whispered. He wanted to kiss her but maybe that was the problem. Rather than trying figure out why they acted the way they did towards each other, they got distracted by their physical connection. Maybe he just needed to try harder to be who she needed mentally, not just physically. He had never really just been friends with Gwen, so he decided to try it. "How are you with drying dishes?"

Adrian's fingers touched her skin, and she looked up at him. At his words, she tried a smile, watery as it was, and closed her eyes, expecting a kiss. When it didn't come, she opened them again, a bit surprised. At his question, Gwen shrugged.

"Terrible?" She offered, not really sure that she was any good at doing the dishes, or much housework for that matter. Granted her mum had made them when they were little, but the last few years they'd had the house elves. She eyed the kitchen, then Adrian. "Is it payment for the meal? You cook and we do the dishes?"

He chuckled, and shook his head. She was so sweet, even if she did think she was a bitch and he found himself bending to place a rather chaste kiss on her forehead.

"No, I'll clean them, but if you still want to stay, you can help, or just watch," he said.

Gwendolyn found herself smiling slightly as Adrian kissed her forehead., It was a sweet gesture, one she wasn't really used to receiving.

"I'll help." Gwendolyn agreed after a sigh. "Just have your wand at the ready, I can't promise I won't drop any." Gwendolyn said, giving him a small smile.

"Okay, then," Ade said, keeping his arm around her shoulders as he led her back to the kitchen. He let her go to collect her plate from the table, where it still sat, and then grabbed the salad bowls, too. "Will you grab those glasses, beautiful?" He placed the dishes in the sink with his own, then flicked his wand to banish the scraps to the bin. Another flick saw the water start to fill the sink, and a swish and flick levitate the pan from where it sat on the stove.

"My mum is quite good with charms for cleaning plates and stuff," he shared, as he pocketed his wand and plunged his hands into the suds. "I'm not so good, regrettably, so I have to do most of it the old fashioned way."

Walking back into the kitchen with Adrian., Gwendolyn followed him to the table, picking up the glasses at his request. Pausing briefly to finish off the wine, Gwen then brought the glasses back into the kitchen before going back to fetch the wine bottle and a few stray pieces of cutlery.

"Is she?" Gwen giggled at the image of Jessamine doing housework. "I wouldn't have thought she'd know them well. She's probably an amazing witch." She said as she leaned against the counter. "Where are the towels?"

"There was a time when we didn't have much money," Adrian said. Most of his father's assets had been frozen after he'd gone to Azkaban so for a few years, life had been a bit of a struggle. To Ade, it was mostly just a hazy memory. "She is pretty amazing, yeah, and she has tried her best to train me. Alas, I failed her! There in the bottom drawer, there on the left."

"There was?" Gwen's head snapped up at the mention of that. Why didn't she know? She almost found herself telling him that it was the same when she was younger, but clamped her mouth shut before she had a chance to reveal that. "How awful." She managed finally, frowning.

"It's not too bad, at least you know how to do all that." Gwen said, waiving her hand over what he was doing in the sink. It was impressive in a weird, and not entirely envious way. Moving to the cabinet, she bent down to retrieve the towel so she could help with the drying. "Though I do think learning the spell is more useful."

What Gwen has said about being broken had flipped some kind of switch in him. It was almost as if he had stopped worrying about whether she was ever going to love him again, because maybe, just maybe, like him, she'd never stopped, but she'd gotten so use to burying those feelings that she didn't know how to stop. He'd have to wait to see if that were true, but he knew the first step would be getting her trust, and he couldn't do that if he weren't honest with her.

"Yeah," he said, rinsing off the plates and placing them in the drying rack. "My dad was one of his supporters and anything he had was frozen after he got caught. We didn't have access to his money until after he died, when I was six."

Gwen nodded in understanding. "Daddy too." She said, sounding more than a little proud as she picked up the plate. It took her a moment, to angle it, and the towel, but she ran it across the front of the plate. She didn't want to talk about their being poor, but she didn't mind talking about her father too much. "Bet that was really hard on you and your mum." She gave him a sympathetic look and frowned slightly. "She seems happy now though."

"I don't think I really realised it the the time, so she was good at hiding it," he said, with a shrug. "It's only later, you know, when you think back that you remember little things. Like there was no presents for my fifth birthday." As much as he didn't like to admit it, his mother was happy, and he knew it was because of his step-father. It was the reason that they tolerated each other. "She is. He might not be good for me, but he is for her, so that's what matters. We've never really gotten along, though we haven't actually fought, either, because we both love her too much for that."

"Oh Ade." She said softly. Poor little Adrian. She knew exactly how sad it could be when thinking back on it, though she preferred not to. Picking up the next plate, Gwen concentrated as she tried not to droop it and dry it at the same time. This was all taking much longer than expected.

"That's good. I am sorry you don't get on though. Will doesn't get on with Alastair much either, but he tries to tolerate him for mum's sake too." She said as she set the place down on the counter on top of the other one.

He washed both glasses and placed them in the drainer before moving onto the salad bowl. After that, it was just the pan and the cutlery. He retrieved another towel, and helped her with the rest.

"I'm glad I've gotten my sisters, though," he said. "I might not like their dad much but they're family, you know?"

Adrian was definitely much better at this than she. Having dried the few plates, she started on the bowl, and he was soon catching up. Gwen nodded in understanding. "Yeah, I know what you mean." It was the same with Damien. Or, rather had been before he'd been killed. Gwen frowned briefly as she thought about her baby brother, but not wanting to talk about it, she forced a smile. "Your sisters are lovely though."

Once they were done with all the drying, Adrian started to put things away, moving around where Gwen was standing and trying not to let the innocent touches affect him.

"After the way they were around you at the party, I'm glad you still think so," he said, shaking his head. He didn't want to tell her that his mother had asked about Gwen in every owl he'd received from her since Christmas. "Mum sends her love, by the way."

"That's okay, I didn't really expect them to like me much." Gwen said with a shrug, moving out of the way now, so Adrian could put things away, as she wasn't sure where anything went. "Does she?" Gwen said a little surprised but pleased. She had really liked Adrian's mum, and it hadn't been at all nerve-wreaking to talk to her. "Well say hello for me the next time you speak to her."

"I don't think it's that they don't like you, Gwen," he said, closing the cupboard he had just placed the plates behind and grabbed the wine glasses. "She'll be happy to know you're still speaking to me. She, at least, loved you. Did you want another glass?"

Gwen was pretty sure that they didn't like her, but she wasn't going to argue the matter with Adrian. At the question, she nodded. "Red this time, maybe?" She suggested. "I loved your mum too, she's brilliant." Gwen said with a smile. "A lot like mine, but well, not my mum, you know?"
