Who: Gwendolyn Montgomery and Adrian Pucey
When: Thursday evening
Where: Adrian's
What: Jealousy rearing its ugly head
Warnings/Rating: NC17

Gwendolyn was annoyed. No, annoyed didn't quite cover just how she was feeling at the moment. One of her good friends went out to dinner with the man she was well, involved with. She was annoyed with Astoria, too, but mostly she was upset with him. After all, he should know better. It was not right at all that he should be having it on with her friends. He claimed to love her, so what exactly was he doing try to romance another woman and call her princess. She never got cute nicknames like that!

Marching up to his front door, Gwendolyn knocked loudly then leaned back a little to cross her arms so that she could glare at him properly when he finally opened the door. Adrian needed to know that he really should not be seeing her friends. The Weasley girl was one thing, and it was gross, but this was so much worse. When the door opened, she gave him her best annoyed look.

"So, how was it? Have fun with your princess?"

"There was a time when we didn't have much money," Adrian said. Most of his father's assets had been frozen after he'd gone to Azkaban so for a few years, life had been a bit of a struggle. To Ade, it was mostly just a hazy memory. "She is pretty amazing, yeah, and she has tried her best to train me. Alas, I failed her! There in the bottom drawer, there on the left."

"There was?" Gwen's head snapped up at the mention of that. Why didn't she know? She almost found herself telling him that it was the same when she was younger, but clamped her mouth shut before she had a chance to reveal that. "How awful." She managed finally, frowning.

"It's not too bad, at least you know how to do all that." Gwen said, waiving her hand over what he was doing in the sink. It was impressive in a weird, and not entirely envious way. Moving to the cabinet, she bent down to retrieve the towel so she could help with the drying. "Though I do think learning the spell is more useful."

What Gwen has said about being broken had flipped some kind of switch in him. It was almost as if he had stopped worrying about whether she was ever going to love him again, because maybe, just maybe, like him, she'd never stopped, but she'd gotten so use to burying those feelings that she didn't know how to stop. He'd have to wait to see if that were true, but he knew the first step would be getting her trust, and he couldn't do that if he weren't honest with her.

"Yeah," he said, rinsing off the plates and placing them in the drying rack. "My dad was one of his supporters and anything he had was frozen after he got caught. We didn't have access to his money until after he died, when I was six."

Gwen nodded in understanding. "Daddy too." She said, sounding more than a little proud as she picked up the plate. It took her a moment, to angle it, and the towel, but she ran it across the front of the plate. She didn't want to talk about their being poor, but she didn't mind talking about her father too much. "Bet that was really hard on you and your mum." She gave him a sympathetic look and frowned slightly. "She seems happy now though."

"I don't think I really realised it the the time, so she was good at hiding it," he said, with a shrug. "It's only later, you know, when you think back that you remember little things. Like there was no presents for my fifth birthday." As much as he didn't like to admit it, his mother was happy, and he knew it was because of his step-father. It was the reason that they tolerated each other. "She is. He might not be good for me, but he is for her, so that's what matters. We've never really gotten along, though we haven't actually fought, either, because we both love her too much for that."

"Oh Ade." She said softly. Poor little Adrian. She knew exactly how sad it could be when thinking back on it, though she preferred not to. Picking up the next plate, Gwen concentrated as she tried not to droop it and dry it at the same time. This was all taking much longer than expected.

"That's good. I am sorry you don't get on though. Will doesn't get on with Alastair much either, but he tries to tolerate him for mum's sake too." She said as she set the place down on the counter on top of the other one.

He washed both glasses and placed them in the drainer before moving onto the salad bowl. After that, it was just the pan and the cutlery. He retrieved another towel, and helped her with the rest.

"I'm glad I've gotten my sisters, though," he said. "I might not like their dad much but they're family, you know?"

Adrian was definitely much better at this than she. Having dried the few plates, she started on the bowl, and he was soon catching up. Gwen nodded in understanding. "Yeah, I know what you mean." It was the same with Damien. Or, rather had been before he'd been killed. Gwen frowned briefly as she thought about her baby brother, but not wanting to talk about it, she forced a smile. "Your sisters are lovely though."

Once they were done with all the drying, Adrian started to put things away, moving around where Gwen was standing and trying not to let the innocent touches affect him.

"After the way they were around you at the party, I'm glad you still think so," he said, shaking his head. He didn't want to tell her that his mother had asked about Gwen in every owl he'd received from her since Christmas. "Mum sends her love, by the way."

"That's okay, I didn't really expect them to like me much." Gwen said with a shrug, moving out of the way now, so Adrian could put things away, as she wasn't sure where anything went. "Does she?" Gwen said a little surprised but pleased. She had really liked Adrian's mum, and it hadn't been at all nerve-wreaking to talk to her. "Well say hello for me the next time you speak to her."

"I don't think it's that they don't like you, Gwen," he said, closing the cupboard he had just placed the plates behind and grabbed the wine glasses. "She'll be happy to know you're still speaking to me. She, at least, loved you. Did you want another glass?"

Gwen was pretty sure that they didn't like her, but she wasn't going to argue the matter with Adrian. At the question, she nodded. "Red this time, maybe?" She suggested. "I loved your mum too, she's brilliant." Gwen said with a smile. "A lot like mine, but well, not my mum, you know?"

Adrian nodded and put the white wine glasses away, and fetched out two larger red wine glasses. His mother had taught him very well, after all. He pulled a lovely Cabernet Sauvignon from the wine rack and popped the cork. He poured the glasses and handed one to her.

"Shall we sit in the lounge?" he suggested.

With the new glasses poured, Gwendolyn nodded and picked hers up. "Sure, we can have a bit of a chat." Gwendolyn said as she let Adrian lead the way to the lounge. She waited until she was seated on the sofa before finally taking a sip from her glass. It was nice, though now that here they were, she wasn't really sure what she should be talking about.

Walking towards the lounge, it hit him that they really didn't have much to talk about, and he tried to think of somewhere to start. They'd spent a lot of time together at Hogwarts, but since then, he'd really only been able to keep up with her life through the snippets he was able to read about. Maybe that would be a good place to start. One question he had wanted to ask for a while was when she'd realised the stage was where she belonged.

"Why acting? How'd you get into that?" he asked, finding it much easier than normal to focus on her face than the rest of her.

As she sat, Gwendolyn smoothed her skirt and toyed with the stem of her glass, as she tried to think of something to say. When he spoke, Gwen paused. She considered giving the stock interview response, the one that made her gush and go on and on about it. Instead, she decided to be honest. Maybe he deserved it.

"I'm not sure." She said, glancing down at her glass. "I've always thought the theatre was fascinating, you know? Being other people, taking on new roles, like an amazing, gorgeous chameleon. You know there's just something fascinating about being anyone you want to be. Plus, it just really seemed so much fun, like a career that you could just enjoy, So I thought WADA would be amazing, and it was, but in a different way than I expected. It's a lot harder than I ever thought it would be, but so rewarding to see all of that effort come out on stage. So many more people are involved in productions than you might expect, and it's just amazing to see how well we work together to bring those two or three, or sometimes four hours of pleasure to the audience." She paused to take a sip of her drink, though her face was already flushed with excitement. "And I will tell you I really love being recognised. It's so wicked to know that people know your face, like being the Minister but way better because you're not doing boring stuff."

It had been a while since Adrian had felt more like smiling than he did right now. Her excitement as she talked about what she loved filled him with joy, and just a little jealousy that he couldn't give her that same feeling, the way she did for him.

"I know what you mean," Adrian said, then took a sip. "I didn't get into Quidditch to be famous, but it's kind of wild how people recognise me. I have kids asking for my autograph sometimes. It's pretty great, actually. You're much better at it than me, though. Truth be told, most people make me sort of nervous."

Taking another sip from her wine, Gwen nodded as Adrian spoke. She smiled a little at the mention of being famous. Well yes, she imagined Quidditch players were loads more famous. Giggling, Gwen shrugged.

"I don't know, I might have gotten into it to be famous." She interjected, sipping her drink. Though truth be told, she did wish someone would ask for her autograph. "Do they?" She asked, raising a brow in surprised. "Do you not like talking to people? You seem to do quite well."

"Sometimes, just kids, though, but it's still weird to think of myself as a role model or something," he said, aware that his cheeks were starting to feel a bit hot. It wasn't like him to get embarrassed over things, so he hoped that she wouldn't be able to tell. "I guess I'm afraid I'll say something stupid. You already know how capable I am of saying the exact wrong thing. I don't want the rest of the world to know how easily I can fuck things up."

"But you have been for ages, haven't you?" Gwen said as she sipped her wine. "I mean to your sister." She explained. She liked being a role model, even if her sister tended to ignore her. "Maybe, but I think you just need to relax Ade." Gwen said with a shake of her head as she gave him a soothing smile. "And you only get odd when you get emotional, but I can always try and help with your media training." She giggled and took a few more sips. That idea amused her beyond belief. "Though I'm sure your agent's better at it."

"That's different," he said, with a shrug. His sister's always looked up to him, but he adored them and had always tried to do everything in his power to make them happy. "They're family, and they forgive you when you mess it up." He was glad she was amused, but he didn't laugh, just watched her, his lips curling at the corners. "I don't really have an agent. Just the team manager."

"I suppose so." Gwen said with a shrug, but part of her kind of wanted to help, if she could. "Then we'll just have to get you an agent." Gwen said with a shake of her head. She took another few sips, finishing her glass. "I'd suggest mine, but I'm not sure they handle sports."

He smirked a little, liking the way she referred to them as "we." He knew it was stupid, after everything she'd said earlier, but any sign of unity between them felt promising.

"If you think it's best, sure, we can do that," he said. He gestured to her glass, eager to find an excuse to keep her around a bit longer. "Did you want another?"

Gwendolyn smiled, pleased that Adrian seemed to be agreeing to her plan. "Good. We'll get started on Monday, send out a few owls. Do any of your teammates have agents?" She asked, then glanced down at her glass as Adrian pointed out. She nodded. "Yes please. Are you having more?"

"Sure am," he said, summoning the bottle and moving over to where she was sitting to refill her glass. Once he'd done his own he sat down again, but this time closer to her, though, not touching her. He thought about asking her to make some kind of date over it, but was afraid that it might come across as another come on that she wasn't ready for. He was a pretty good cook, thanks mostly to his mum, and one of the things he could make well was quiche. "How about I cook lunch for us? See if we can make it through a meal without me crying like a baby."
