WHO: Molly Walker and Castiel
WHAT: Meeting and chatting.
WHEN: Around 4PM
WHERE: The courtyard for Building D
RATING: TBD
STATUS: In Progress

Even with Sylar's promise that Danko wasn't going to mess with her again anytime soon, Molly was still hesitant to leave her apartment. She never left, in fact, without checking - then double checking - Danko's whereabouts. She also never went out alone, or left her PDA behind, or anything else that might make it easier for the man to take her. She did her best to follow any rules that Mohinder had to give her (which weren't many, she had to admit) and made sure the teachers at school knew not to make her leave should Danko try to pick her up there.

Still, for all of her precautions and worries, Molly was ultimately a ten-year-old child. Granted she was exceptionally mature for someone of her tender years, but she was still a young girl who became bored easily and felt the effects of cabin fever much faster than most adults might. So it was no real surprise that she found herself restless and lacking anything to do. The only actual surprise, in fact, was how she decided this particular time to deal with it.

She left the apartment to take a walk.

Danko wasn't nearby. He'd been across town for the majority of the day, in fact, and hadn't moved recently. Molly wasn't sure exactly what he was doing, and frankly tried not to think about it, but the knowledge that he was stationary gave her the courage to leave her room and make a beeline for the courtyard she could just see from her bedroom window. It was a pretty day, she decided, so why not enjoy some fresh air? Besides, her homework was finished and she'd left a note for Mohinder telling him exactly where she'd be. He could even see her from their apartment if he looked just right.

Assured that she wasn't doing anything too rash, she executed her plan and a few minutes after leaving the relative safety of her new home, Molly was standing in a patch of grass with the sun beaming down overhead and the sweet smell of flowers in the air. There was a chill in the wind, too, which signified fall was fast approaching. It was her favorite time of year, in fact, and the girl made her way to a nearby bench to simply enjoy the serenity of the moment. As she sat down, she quickly re-closed her eyes and located Danko. Which is why she didn't realize she was no longer alone in the courtyard.

Everything looked different now.
This place used to be a prison, now it was a blessing.
Even the concrete walls that marked where trees and grass should have been were suddenly allies.

The almost smiled, his steps a little lighter. Anyone who knew him may actually think there was something wrong with him.
But he didn't meet anyone he knew.

He had taken to walking around the city, something he had rarely done before, mostly because it had depressed him.

One thing he noticed was that there were very few children. It was curious. There were, of course, the "fake" children that came with the city but he had yet to see a real child, until now.

It was enough to peak his curiosity. He knew very well that being here meant being trapped a long way from home. Normally Castiel would not take much interest in the people he found dotted around the city but this was a child and children were most special to God and most in need of protection.

She appeared to be alone which was a concern in this place (though, now that his Father was here, it would have to improve).
Castiel moved closer. He noticed her eyes were closed and he spoke softly so he wouldn't scare her.

"It is beautiful today." His head was tilted to the sun.

Molly's eyes snapped open at the voice and her breath hitched in her throat. For a split second she was scared - absolutely terrified - that Danko had somehow tricked her and was now standing right there in front of her. Then her eyes caught up with her brain and she realized this wasn't Danko. This was...

Actually, Molly didn't recognize him. Not from the people she'd seen in the city and not from the message boards. She knew it was possible she'd seen a post of his here or there, and had just forgotten, but she didn't think so.

Either way, though, he wasn't Danko which meant she instantly relaxed and even offered him a small, slightly embarrassed smile. "Sorry," she apologized, "I didn't know anyone else was out here."

Her gaze flickered upward, then, to the blue sky overhead. The rays of the sun warmed her face and her smile grew. "It is beautiful," she agreed as she looked back to the stranger. "But there hasn't been much bad weather since I showed up, really. It's a little... odd."

"I have not seen rain since I arrived," Castiel said, "Three months ago. It is curious."

He did moved around to the front of the bench to sit, not because he needed to rest, but so he wasn't looming over the child.
He liked to look people in the eye when he spoke to them

"Did you come here alone?" he asked though he knew the answer the moment she thought it.

"It rained a little bit, the other day," Molly pointed out, shifting a bit to make room for him on the bench. Her legs swung idly back and forth, not quite long enough for her feet to reach the ground just yet. "But only for a few minutes, and it was just around the library where we all showed up." She frowned mildly, wondering if maybe it had been someone with an ability showing up instead of an actual weather pattern.

Deciding it didn't matter either way, she shrugged the thought from her mind and focused instead on what he'd asked.

"I showed up alone," she finally answered as honestly as she could. "But I'm not alone anymore. Mohinder showed up and has been taking care of me." She smiled at the thought, still not quite comfortable referring to him as 'Papa' when speaking about him. She supposed that'd take a little getting used to.

"There are other people I know from back home, too," she admitted after a pause, meeting Castiel's gaze with a smile that was softened around the edges but still quite bright. "So I was never really alone, I guess." Even if she'd felt very much alone, with Claude not knowing who she was and the only other two vaguely familiar faces being Noah Bennet - who had threatened to shoot her before - and Sylar - who had been her own personal monster.

Now, though, there was just Danko from back home to worry about. Thinking of the man made her close her eyes briefly, check his location, and then return her gaze back to Castiel with a sense of relief that the man who had shot Mohinder and tried to abduct her still wasn't anywhere nearby.

"You are safe," Castiel said as he followed her expression, as her thoughts touched on his, beyond her awareness. "While I am here you are safe.

"I have also been fortunate enough to meet those I knew from... outside. Even some from home." Oh, yes. Some from home.

"Some good things have happened here. Good things do happen here.
I am glad you are not alone. You have those who care for you."

He sat stiffly like he was unaccustomed to his body. His hands hung down between his knees as he leaned forward a little.

"My name is Castiel," he said suddenly. "May I ask your name?" Though he knew the answer to that too.

Molly just blinked at his initial comment. Any other child might have felt a bit uneasy at the statement. She, however, had been told that enough times by others that it seemed a commonplace thing to say to her. She was always safe, according to the grown-ups in her life.

It was just a pity that she didn't always believe that, anymore.

Still, he was right. Danko wasn't anywhere near them, so she was safe for the time being. Which let her relax and continue smiling. She even answered his question without any real pause.

"Molly," she said simply. "Molly Walker. And it's nice to meet you, Castiel." She paused then, for a heartbeat, before asking a question of her own.

"Who do you know from back home?"

To her, it was a fair question. He'd asked, she'd answered, it was only right he did the same in return. Granted she had no way of knowing what a loaded question she was asking, but even if she'd known, chances are Molly still would have asked. Fair was fair, after all.

Had Castiel been more socially aware, a little less upfront, he may have taken some care in how he answered the next question but he wasn't and so he didn't. To the best of his knowledge there was no reason to. His phasing was only vague and largely devoid of suspicion by chance.

"My charge, Dean Winchester. His brother, Sam Winchester. My brother Aziraphale, my sister Anna and, lastly, my Father." He almost glowed at the last word, and he very nearly smiled. "Only," he added, "please do not tell Dean my Father is here, if you know him. He is not yet allowed to know."

Whatever reaction Molly had been expecting, that certainly wasn't it. Granted it wasn't overly odd, necessarily, but something about the way he said 'Father' didn't bring an image of a dad as she thought of one, to mind. Especially when you added in things like 'my charge' as someone else he knew.

Still, Molly wasn't one to jump to conclusions. Or at least wasn't going to jump to conclusions and verbalize that fact right off the bat. No, she much more preferred to think things over a bit before commenting. Sometimes the answers became obvious before she even said a word.

"I don't know Dean," she said instead. Her smile faltered a bit as she added, "But... his brother's not here anymore." Which, okay. That probably sounded a little odd, especially when she said it in such a matter-of-fact way, but it was the truth. Sam Winchester was no longer in Colligo... or at least was no longer alive in Colligo. Molly was absolutely certain of that fact.

"I am aware of Sam's depature," Castiel said. And that wasn't an overly odd thing to say but the next thing was. "I cannot feel him any more."

Then he asked the obvious question. "Did you know him?"

He tilted his head in curiosity. Had the girl met Sam? He wondered at the circumstances of that meeting. Had she been troubled by...

Molly blinked at what he said, slightly shocked at the phrasing. He couldn't feel him anymore? Her brow furrowed in thought and she very nearly missed his question. After a second, though, she shook her head.

"I never met him either," she stated softly. Shifting a little, twisting around so she was facing him directly, she eyed Castiel for a long minute before closing her eyes. With a soft inhale, then an even softer exhale, she reopened her eyes and met his gaze once more.

"Dean Winchester is in his apartment," she told him in an even tone. "The one he shares with Claire Bennet. She's there too. I can see them both, when I look for them. When I looked for Sam, after Dean said he couldn't find him, I couldn't see him. That means he's not here." Completely calm, despite the slight tremble of nervousness at just how dangerous it could be to admit her ability to a veritable stranger.

Yet Molly felt if nothing else that the horror of the past few years had taught her how to judge people more or less. She might miss it, once or twice, but she was all but certain Castiel wasn't someone who would try to hurt her. She didn't know if she could trust him, necessarily, but she definitely didn't fear him.

Castiel stared down at the girl. She was human. He was sure of that. No demon or angel, no vampire. Just a girl.

He also knew she wasn't lying. He could feel where Dean was. He was in his apartment.

"Do you know where anyone is at any time?" Castiel asked carefully.
It was unlikely. It was so unlikely. She could be guessing at just one. Perhaps.

Molly nodded slowly, frowning a bit as she dropped her gaze to her lap. "As long as they're still here," she admitted.

Her fingers absently picked at a loose thread on the sleeve of her shirt. Twirling it around her finger, she worried it to and fro for a bit. "They call it clairvoyance, but I just say I can find people," she said quietly as she slowly peered back to Castiel. "At home, I could find anybody in the whole world. Here, it's just the city. But it works just the same."

Molly would have considered the explanation over, but she knew there was one more thing she had to admit. Because she couldn't just find anyone. There were limits. Or, really, just one limit.

"Unless they're dead," she finally said somberly. "If someone is dead, I can't find them anymore." Personally, Molly thought that was likely because they weren't around to be found, anymore, but she let him draw his own conclusions. The reasons why, she knew, mattered very little to most people anyway. Especially when there was no way to change it.

"It is useful," Castiel nodded, "to know where those are you need to contact and those you need to avoid. Have you always had your ability Molly?"

Castiel never really went to great (or even small) efforts to hide his nature. It did not really occur to him there was a need to.
He was not ashamed of what he was and he rarely found it difficult to convince people he was not human. He did not watch his words.

"If they are dead they are with the Lord or the Morning Star. I can find souls there too but it is much more difficult in Hell. It took me forty years to find Dean. He was dead but he is not now. I brought him back."

His tone was perfunctory as he were speaking of baking a cake or buying some milk from the shops. He looked into the middle distance, a little lost in how own thoughts.

"Ever since I was little," Molly admitted easily enough. Talking about the past, while not necessarily an easy thing at times, wasn't nearly as dangerous as talking about the present. "I got sick for a little while and it wouldn't work but Mohinder made me better."

She paused there and glanced back toward her lap. Memories of that time, the loss of her family, being hunted by Sylar, all of it, rushed to the surface at that simple statement. Molly hardly cried for the pain of that time anymore, but it still made her feel sad. She might have stayed slightly saddened, too, if Castiel hadn't spoken again.

When he did, she slowly turned her gaze back to him. There was a contemplative expression on her face, mixed with a slight bit of wonder at the sheer strangeness of his words. When Molly spoke again, there was a hesitant pause before she began.

"You can bring people back who have died?" She sat up a bit straighter, studying him intently. "Really bring them back to life again and everything?"

"Your gift causes you pain too." Castiel said in concern, looking down at the girl. "Do you wish it to go away?"

Castiel was somewhat better at reading expressions that recreating them and he could see the pain on her face. But there was strength there too.
His Father was wise. He knew where His gifts were best placed.

He did not like to boast of his abilities but it was simply a question and he answered it.
"I can and I have, once. It is not something I will do unless ordered by Heaven. Such things as life and dead are not for me to tamper with."

He looked at her carefully. "Please do not consider asking me to bring back someone for you. I could not from this place anyway. Both Heaven and Hell are closed to me."

Although Molly tried to be strong, and did her best to react maturely to situations, there were times when she was still very much just a ten-year-old little girl. At Castiel's next words, that much was painfully obvious as her entire expression seemed to crumple and tears blurred her vision almost instantly.

Looking back to her lap, she gave a bit of a nod. She didn't trust her voice to speak, knew if she uttered as much as one word she was going to start crying and she didn't want to do that. At least, not in front of a veritable stranger.

So instead she stayed quiet for a second, doing her best to compose herself. When she spoke again, her voice was quiet and small. Her gaze remained fixed on her lap.

"My parents died. My dad was killed because he could do something that someone else wanted to know how to do, and my mom was killed because she wouldn't say where I was hiding." Scrubbing at her eyes with her fists, she sniffled quietly and slowly peered back up at Castiel.

"The man that killed them wanted to do what I can do, too. And sometimes, I do want it to go away. My parents are dead because of it and I had to move all the way to India because of it and-" Her lips turned downward into a thoughtful expression as something else occurred to her. Without missing a beat, she switched gears mid-sentence.

"What do you mean, Heaven and... you know... are closed to you? That doesn't make sense. How can they just not be there?"

Castiel’s face was as close to kind as it ever got. His voice was soft.
“Molly, your mother was very brave. Your father was a good man. They are resting in Heaven’s fields. They are at peace. You will see them again.” This was not the platitude of a priest or a well meaning adult trying to comfort a grieving child with pretty lies. This was a statement of absolute certainly as casually spoken as an offer of ones name of the answer to a simple mathematic equation.

Castiel was curious. He wondered how such a gift could be stolen but he did not think it would be, kind, to ask while the girl was so upset. So, in a show of rare consideration for human feeling, he didn’t ask quite yet.
“It is not unexpected to want to give away your gift sometimes. Any great gift is also a burden.” It sounded like a platitude but Castiel spoke from experience. A special gift, a singular role, was more than enough to turn your life upside down and leave you out of your depth. “But a gift can also bring you some things you do not want to go away. Have you not met people who are important to you? People you would not know without it?” His own mind turned to Dean.

Castiel followed the change of subject. His answer was slow and considered.
“I believe they are still there. My Father certainly did not mention they were not and He surely would. It is merely that I cannot leave this place, I cannot contact what is outside and Heaven is outside of this place.” Everytime Castiel was reminded of this fact he felt a twisting in his chest. He dropped his head a little, an automatic gesture.

Molly felt a bit guilty at having asked the question. Obviously not being able to contact Heaven wouldn't be something anyone would want to talk about too much. Not being able to contact Grandma Suresh in India was certainly a source of sorrow for her, after all.

Not wanting to keep dwelling on the subject, partially afraid she'd upset him too much, the girl instead offered a hint of a smile. "You're right, you know, about meeting people important to me. I wouldn't know Matt, or Mohinder, or Grandma Suresh, without my ability. And I wouldn't be able to speak Hindi, which I really like being able to do, and live in India, which is just wonderful and..."

She trailed off, lips pursing as she thought about everything she'd gained since the tragedy that had befallen her parents. "I still miss my mom and dad," she admitted after a second. "But I don't want to give up what I can do. Someday, I might be able to really help people. If I gave it up somehow, I'd be acting selfish."

With that decided - even if actually giving up her ability hadn't been an option but merely a discussion - Molly gave a definitive nod as though that settled it. Then she absently tucked a few locks of hair behind her ear and squinted a bit at him with another thoughtful expression.

"So... you're an angel, right?" she questioned, even if her tone was anything but questioning. She was pretty certain she was right. There weren't many other options left as to what he could be, really.

"Your desire is admirable," Castiel said softly.
He thought his Father would be pleased with this child. Things looked well for her soul. He was confident she would see her parents again. He found this thought curiously pleasing.

He sat back and little and looked at the sky. Of all the people he had met here the girl was the easiest company but there was something else she had. A remarkable hope and acceptance rarely found in adult humans, especially in this place.

He was pondering on this when she spoke again.
He did not react outwardly at all, just spoke simply.
"Yes. I am." He patiently awaited her honest reaction.
He had received many such from shooting to grovelling but he expected no such display from Molly.

Logically, Molly knew that he could be lying. He could just be some crazy person who was saying all of this stuff but none of it was true. He could also be a bad guy, just saying these things to put her at ease and make her feel that she could trust him.

Yet she didn't think any of that was the case. No, as she sat there, studying him for a long moment after he'd confirmed what she'd suspected, Molly decided that he was telling the truth. And as most children were capable of, even ones who had been through the things she had and seen the darker, more jaded side of humanity, she accepted his truth at face value.

The corners of her mouth turned upward as she smiled slightly at him, shifting a bit on the bench so she was sitting a bit straighter. Most adults in her situation might ask something existential. Something about God. Creation. Heaven and Hell. Anything to shed further light on the mystery that always surrounds the faith of religion.

Molly, however, just asked quite simply, and with the wonder and open curiosity only children are capable of expressing, "Do you have wings?"

Castiel smiled.

It was the rarest of occurrences and it looked a little strange on his face but the effect was not displeasing.
"I do."

He had only done this once before and then it had been of the most vital importance. Now it served no purpose but, perhaps, it would please the child.

He stood up and moved a little distance away. He turned to face her, spread his hands and frowned in concentration. He knew there was no one else around.

A flash of lighting, a flicker of bright light and two heavy black shadows rose from Castiel's back. They were huge, over ten metres long each. They were graceful as he stretched them out to their full extent.

He held them there for a moment and then allowed them to blink out.
He moved back to the bench and sat with Molly again.

"That is they only way they are safe for you to view them but they are attached to my grace. They are always there."

Molly watched as he stood, uncertain for a moment just what he was doing. Was he leaving? Just like that? Briefly she wondered if she'd upset him by guessing that he was an angel. She hoped not.

Then he turned toward her and she realized, with a start, what he was intending. Her breath caught in her throat, eyes widening as she perched on the edge of the bench in anticipation. She wasn't sure what to expect but she knew it was going to be amazing.

As it turned out, it was even better than what she'd thought it might be. The sight of his wings - even just the shadows of them - was completely and utterly indescribable to the normally verbose girl. And when he put them away and returned to sit beside her, for a brief moment she could only stare at him in complete and utter awe.

Finally, though, she found her voice again. It was somewhat shaky as she murmured, "That was..." She shook her head, unable to find a word that worked. 'Amazing' just didn't come close. So instead, she asked, "Your grace? You mean... what makes you an angel?" It had been a while since Molly had stepped foot in a Christian church but she thought that was what it meant.

Castiel nodded briefly. "You are correct. My grace is like energy. It is where I derive my powers, how I can speak to my Father and my siblings. It holds my form when I am not in a vessel. It is a gift from my Father, a part of Him."

He was glad he had shown her his wings. It was the first time he had shown them to someone who already believed him.

"Like all gifts it comes with a responsibility too."
He looked a little tired as he hung his head.
"But my mission has given me a chance to meet people I would normally not even be able to speak to. I have heard Dean say that he would not change his experiences even though they are difficult. I am beginning to understand that."

She thought she understood so she didn't press the matter but instead stayed quiet as he continued to speak. Molly listened intently to him, gaze never leaving his face even when he hung his head. After a second, when she thought he might be finished, she finally allowed a bit of her own wisdom - which was well beyond her tender years but had been earned through more heartache than most would ever have to endure - to shine through.

"It's what happens that makes us who we are," she stated simply. "Just like you said a minute ago. Losing my parents was sad, but I've met lots of good people too and probably never would have if I hadn't lost them and been able to do what I can do. I think the same goes for you."

It made sense to her, anyway. She might have continued, too, but instead her mind switched tracks yet again and Molly all but hesitated before asking her next question. When she posed it, her tone was quiet. Almost as though she was worried he might not answer her, or that it was wrong for her to ask.

"Castiel... what's God like?"

Castiel was not angry at her question. Instead it elicited a little smile.
His whole demeanour changed as he relaxed and pulled back the muscles of his face to animate his features rather than simply move them.
“God is wise, loving and kind. God is forgiving, whimsical and very good at Skeeball.
He took my hand when I was afraid and said my name with love. God is gentle and fierce, protective and angry, God is what He needs to be but he always acts out of love. He is here, you know. In this place is where he took my hand.”

His manner became more philosophical. “You are correct in what you say. If I had not rebelled I would not have seen God in this way, nor would I have met you or Claire or become close to Dean. I would not choose differently, even if it meant I would get to go home. This is… better.”

He looked down at Molly. "Did I answer your question?"

Molly blinked. "Skeeball?" she echoed. Her forehead crinkled a bit. "God plays skeeball? The game with the ramp and balls and holes that are worth points?" Well. That certainly wasn't what she had been expecting to hear, but she still believed him. She was just a bit surprised but still smiled.

"He sounds wonderful." Which was rather a given, considering it was God they were talking about. She tucked some hair behind her ear and peered up at him.

"If I hadn't come here," she admitted softy, "I would still be afraid of Sylar. Now..." She smiled again. "He saved my life, you know. He didn't have to. Not long ago he wanted to cut open my head and look at my brain. But here, he saved me. And not being afraid of him is something that I never thought I'd feel. Even in India, I worried he'd find me and try to hurt me."

Straightening up a bit, she nodded, "And yes, you answered my question. Thank you."
