You aren't meant to be the older brother. I barely know what to do and I'm the one that

Have I been a good brother? I know I don't play very much but that's only because I don't want you to expect other children to overlook how we are when you're old enough to

Are you sure you know what to do?

Like what? An overprotective pain?

Yeah, a bit.

But it isn't as though I haven't given you more than enough reason to be what the fact that I've either attempted to kill myself or get myself killed several times a year since I was in my early teens.

Ignore Sherlock.

You're not a pain and he always provokes the overprotective part.

I'm John Watson, a friend of his.

He's my brother. I can't ignore him. I wouldn't, even if I could.

He has to tell the truth so I must be a pain, at least according to him.

It's nice to meet you, sir.

Well, don't ignore him all together, but don't let what he says upset you. He's terribly insensitive even when he isn't forced to be honest.

To be fair, Sherlock finds most people to be pains in some way or another. One of the pitfalls of his genius. He thinks a lot more of you than he does of most people.

It's very nice to meet you too. I know you when you're older, of course, but this is a bit different. And please, call me John.

How can it not upset me? Clearly he thinks I'm an awful older brother, even if what you're saying is true.

Are you sure? I'm not supposed to call adults by their first names. My mum says it's very rude.

I'm going to tell you a secret now that Sherlock would be very cross with me for sharing. He doesn't think you're an awful older brother. He just really enjoys being a bratty younger brother and pushing your buttons.

That's how he is. I'm his best friend and he regularly tells me I'm an idiot. It's his misguided way of showing affection.

But don't tell him I told you that.

It isn't rude if the adult says that it's okay. Please, I insist.

Oh. He does? I'd always hoped we'd be friends when we were older since I can't ever make any of my own in school or Back home he just follows me around, asking after the names of things and how to say them.

But my mum says grown-ups only want me calling them by their first name so they'll think of me as an equal since I'm smarter than they are. All right. It's very nice to meet you then, John.

He's a kid, he doesn't need to know that he's an overprotective pain. He needs to know that he hasn't totally screwed up. In a nice way. Nice.
