Channelling the Green Mother - OTA
Who: Abby Sciuto and - all together, now - anyone who would like to poke her gently with a stick...
Where: The Greenhouse.
When: After the change of the seasons.
Rating: I'll say PG-13, because...
Summary: Abby decides it's time to get her hands dirty...

"'Mary, Mary, quite contrary,
How does your garden grow?'
'With silver bells and cockle shells,
And pretty maids, all in a row.'"

~ Traditional English Nursery Rhyme

She's wearing black, which isn't unusual, but is very casual today: t-shirt, pants and boots. The t-shirt does have the skull-and-crossbones on it, but that's okay.

She doesn't think the plants will mind.

Abby walks the distance to the greenhouse, which is tucked neatly between the residence and the stables, and opens the door. The smell of earth and natural fertilizer and green, growing things wraps around her sense.

Ahh...

She opened the cupboards, checking for seeds and pots and soil and respecting the other plantings. Gathering what she needs - including the seeds she'd hoped for - she makes sure her pigtails are secure and starts to work.

She does look rather ladylike in her long skirts and the long blonde plaits extending to her waist.

"Oh, not at all. It is always good to see someone else enjoying the greenhouse." Elaine has a rather lush garden already going, with many flowers and herbs.

"I'm pleased to meet you. I am Elaine." She smiles brightly at the other girl.

"Pleased to met you, too," Abby says, and holds out a hand. When she realizes she already has dirt on her fingers, she pulls it back again and manages a small curtsy.

"So," she continues when she straightens. "Is all that yours?" She nods her head to a thriving section of the greenhouse.

Elaine smiles. "Yes. I went a little crazy, I am afraid. But I do so love to grow things."

"Hey, there is absolutely nothing wrong with going crazy," Abby assures her. "Uh, except if you go on a killing rampage or something. That's not a good kind of crazy, you know? But you so don't look like a killer..."

She grins. "Sorry, rambling, I do that, and I can tell! Your garden looks awesome. I'm not quite so ambitious, but I wanted to get dirty, you know?"

Elaine laughs. "Well, you are perfectly entitled to ramble."

She nods. "Oh, I well understand the feeling. I was so longing to grow things and when this place appeared, I think I was happier than I have ever been anywhere, when I began to garden."

"Oh, good," she said. "Because I do. It's my thing. Too much caffeine, some say. I think it's just me, you know? And it might be amplified by the caffeine..." She shook her head, as if trying to disperse a persistent fly.

"Anyway, the greenhouse is an awesome idea. I don't know who to thank, other than the management, but my need to grow things will be fed." She held up the seed package. "Baby tomatoes. Have I... mentioned what I was going to grow already?"

Elaine can't help but smile. She is a very charming woman.

"I have never had a tomato...and they have baby ones?" They were not so plentiful in Dark Ages Britain.

Well, at least she's smiling and not running away...

"You've never had a tomato? Oh, they are awesome! I make this really neat couscous salad, with chickpeas and cucumber and tomatoes and herbs. Tomatoes go with everything."

Abby holds up one of the seeds. "These will grow little tomatoes, about this big." She makes a small circle between thumb and forefinger. "You can try some, if you like, assuming they don't die."

She starts planting and asks, "So, did you have a garden where you're from?"

"I think I shall have to," she said.

"Oh, yes. Mostly herbs and flowers in my own garden, but I also learned to grow all sorts of vegetables. My nurse made sure I could do everything one of the servant girls in the castle could do."

"Well, like I said, if they don't die on me, I'll make sure you get some. What herbs to do you grow?"

Abby puttered with soil and seeds, planting two per pot and having six pots to go. She didn't miss a beat at the reference to 'servant girls' or 'castle'. She'd been in this freaky place long enough to know there were all sorts from everywhere and everywhen Here.

"And your nurse sounds like a smart cookie. Always good to have as many skills as you can, 'cause you never know, you know?"

"Aye, and that is what Mab said. 'Ye never know what a girl's life might be, and fortunes change with the whim of the wind, and I'll not have ye unprepared for tha,'" Elaine said, in a passable imitation that gave her a pang of loss. Sometimes she really did miss Mab. "You never know where life will take you."

Abby laughs.

"That was good! I mean, I've never met Mab, but I can just picture her. So, yeah, where life takes you, like strange universes with even stranger people." She sighs. "You seem to be doing okay, though."

Elaine smiles. "Well, I have found love here so it makes things easier. We shall be married soon. When I first came here, I was very frightened, though."

Abby gapes.

"You're getting married? OhmyGod! That'll be two weddings in, like less than a month!"

She bounces and hugs Elaine. She's like that.

"Congratulations! OhmyGod!"

The enthusiasm with which her statement was taken catches Elaine a little off-guard, as does the other woman's hug, but Elaine just laughs and hugs back.

"I thank you for your well-wishes," she says, laughing.

Elaine hugs back and Abby is relieved. She knows that she can sometimes be overwhelming.

"You're most welcome, of course! That's so awesome!" She releases Elaine and smiles. "So, did he come Here with you or did you meet him Here, the way Lucas and Layla met one another? Oh! And what's he like?"

She doesn't mean to pry. She's just genuinely excited for the young woman.
