Who: Peter and Lena
What: Yay marriage? Their friends don't come around much anymore, and now poker night is canceled
Where: 1104
When Around 10 PM
Warnings: None at the moment
Peter was in the kitchen leaning against the counter with the phone up to his ear. He was trying not to sound disappointed as he listened to his friend rattle off every lame excuse in the book as to why he and his wife were not coming to poker night. Poker night had once been a staple among the Kellys and their friends. Every Saturday night, without fail, they'd meet up at someone's house to drink good beer and play poker. It was a good way to unwind after a long week, and they found that the time among their friends always yielded good rewards for them as a couple. They never fought on poker night, and even if they were feeling tired they always made the effort to go, and they had never regretted it.
This coming Saturday happened to be Lena and Peter's turn to host poker night and for the third time in a row their friends had all canceled. Other poker nights at other homes had always gone off without a hitch, it seemed that a disconcerting pattern was starting to arise. Finally with enough goading, Peter's friend Tom admitted that no one really liked going over to the Kelly house because the building gave everyone bad vibes. Peter had scoffed and hung up the phone not wanting to bother talking anyone into coming over. It was after ten, he was already in his pajamas, and he wasn't going to beg his friends to hang out with them.
Peter went about making a pot of Lena's "sleepy time tea" and thinking over what his friend had said. It was ridiculous at the first moment; honestly, there was nothing wrong with their building or it's tenants. Of course as soon as Peter thought about it long enough he realized that there was plenty wrong with the building, and a lot of it's tenants were pretty questionable. But this was New York City! What did anyone expect? It wasn't as if they particularly liked schlepping out to Brooklyn for poker night, but they did it. For six whole months they'd made the embarrassing train ride out to Jersey while their friends Judy and Kyle were living there to save some money up.
He knew that if he thought too hard about it he would veer down a path he had no interest in traveling. Not tonight in any case. He heard footsteps behind him just as the kettle started to whisper and he turned around to see Lena in the kitchen door. "I already started the tea," he said smiling briefly and turning back to pour the water into the two mugs he'd set out. He could hear the look she was giving his back as he made the tea. Tea was almost always her job, and he only took point on that task when he was particularly distracted with things, or when he wanted to butter her up for bad news.
Despite the look he could now also feel boring into his back he finished his task and turned around, mugs in hand, "Poker night is canceled again," he paused, "It's back on next weekend naturally." He said knowing she'd catch his drift as he handed the mug to her. "They're not even trying to hide it anymore."
