open thread: When Kaiju Attack
Who: Open. CLOSED (2/2 @ 11 PM Pacific).
What: The Avengers tackle an attack on the city, on three fronts.
When: One weekday afternoon, mid-January.
Where: various locations.

    CURRENT TEAMS & AGENTS: HERE.

Threading Timeline: 1/15/2020 to 2/2/2020 (threads will be frozen at 11 PM, Pacific). This event takes place over the course of one day, depicting only one moment in time. That means that other logs can be posted at any time after this and mention clean up efforts.

Plot Summary, Map, and Size Comparison: HERE.

Notes: Monsters are NPCs but you can mention monster actions/reaction/descriptions in your tags to get a hit in. Also, it's ok to post things set after the monster attack or mention it happening in network posts or logs! Clean up operations will be ongoing the day after the attack and it will take weeks to clean up the mess. A news post toward the end of the month will address that as an ongoing situation.

Team Threads: To help with communication, we'll try something new. If anyone needs to post a plan or change of plans to their teammates, or to say something to another team, you can communicate in your own team thread by putting "message to ____" in the subject line of each post, filling in the blank with a name or team number. That way, someone else knows to look there and can reply with a brief message!

If anyone playing a team member gets RL busy, it's ok to excuse your character to go save a civilian. Just make sure that there are other teammates there capable of taking down the creatures!

S.H.I.E.L.D. agents: Those stationed in each area have the option to interact in either Team Threads or Civilian Threads. They're the only baseline humans that can move through both threads freely. You can have them get caught in the crossfire, or describe what they're doing around each location to help out. Since agents have the same communication device, they can "message to ____" other agents or a nearby Avengers team.

Civilians Thread: It's optional to submit any short narratives here. Because this is a game-wide plot, it counts toward Activity Check!

Civilians (baseline humans) do not have a comm device, only cellphones. They can thread things in the Civilian portion. These threads can happen simultaneously with what's happening in the team fights. That means if something happens in a team thread, you can incorporate that into your thread if they are in the nearby vicinity.

Since it's imperative monsters are stopped ASAP, Avengers can't drop what they're doing to go off and thread with civilians. They have a city and people to save. However, if a fight seems 99% handled, a team member can excuse themselves to assist civilian characters, OR they can interact in this thread directly after a fight is finished.

Have fun!

"Welcome, Thor! King T'Challa and Lady Natasha are on the way and can lead the clearance," Sif replied. Over the comms, there was a crash as she kept the thing from stepping on her. "I have its attention for now. Tell me when I need to get clear."

It was still moving, but Thor could see she'd injured it, and it was now annoyed. At her.

Natasha had taken over piloting the Quinjet when she'd gotten close to the scene. "Hey, folks, I'll start guiding the civilians out of here."

She set the Quinjet down close to where people were running toward in a frenzy. She cued up the loudspeaker. "Everyone, please come this way. Please clear the area and get to safety as quickly and orderly as possible."

She set the jet to play that message on repeat as she lowered the ramp and moved outside to take stock of the situation.

The prickly beast's back arched up, the entire body starting to shake, every quill rising and quivering. From where Stephen was standing, he guessed it was a defensive stance. Eating several late-night after-surgery dinners with Animal Planet on TV was an unforgettable experience. At least the quills wouldn't shoot out at anyone. That was an old myth that he hoped would hold true in this case.

He still needed to protect those nearby, as well as give Natasha more time to get the fleeing civilians away from the scene.

"Mystic Shields of Oshtur!" Doctor Strange shouted, pushing his hands out against the shielding he already threw up over the street entrance. Several large sigil shields bloomed like flame in front of Sif and T'Challa, as well as behind some retreating families, as the animal rolled up and began rolling north through the park. The quills bounced harmlessly off the shields, leaving several quills speared into the ground and any park fixtures in the way.

Once the creature stopped and shook itself out, the shields evaporated. Strange's expression was one of grim determination. He needed to keep the current shielding up in case he was the last barrier between this animal and getting further into the city. The only way to gather enough power to do that was to invoke power from the Vishanti.

He knew that should give Thor, Sif, and Black Panther enough time to take it down. The quills might not have hurt Sif or been able to get through the Black Panther habit, but it might have been an inconvenience that neither of them needed.

The beast's quills could certainly not get through the panther habit - instead, the kinetic energy would be absorbed, and then reserved to deliver a hard strike; with him T'Challa also had his sonic spear. He spun it in his hands and then struck it against the ground - the subsequent shockwave rippled like a mushroom cloud, ballooning outward, in an attempt to get beneath the creature and knock it off its feet. Once it was down, and hopefully paralyzed, then they could go from there.

"Let me get closer to those quills, I will use the energy in a counter-attack," he said into the comm device, doubling back and around to figure out the best place to land another blow with the spear in order to displace the already unsteady monster.

The first blow of the kinetic spear kept the creature away from Sif, who it was initially focused on. It not only stunned it but caused it to shrink in on itself, rolling back into the park where it had come from. Benches and concrete footpaths were torn up until it came to a stop against a nearby building, the quills sticking into the structure, so it was stuck and temporarily unable to move.

The prickly monster came to and began to angrily chatter while stuck on its back. Without the ability to get its feet back under it again, all four stubby legs tried to curl up into itself for further protection. However, most of the soft underbelly was still bared, aimed up at the sky.

It would certainly be prone to any attacks from above, and easy to keep pinned in place for those fighting on the ground.

Once she'd taken stock of the size of the creature, Natasha had deployed the remote loudspeaker system to remain where the Quinjet was currently parked. They needed something to keep directing the civilians out of the way of harm. She made the Quinjet invisible and lifted it to circle the area. The monster had been huge but was even larger up close and personal.

Once it was stuck in the tree from T'Challa's blows, Natasha unleashed a a barrage of fire to prevent it from uncurling and several netted missiles to try and lock it down. They didn't know where these creatures came from and maybe they could just send them back to their homes instead of killing them.

There were also several bazookas she was holding in reserve in case things got desperate.

"Thor, if you are ready, T'Challa and I can stay back long enough for you to strike it. Then we can close and finish it, if it survives your attack," Sif suggested over comms.

Thor grinned toothily. "Welcome news, indeed, Sif."

From his position in the air, he lifted his hammer up and closed his eyes and felt the electricity start to gather and course through his veins. The ever present tingling sensation started to build while he allowed himself access to his full powers.

Not since the flood and defense of New Asgard had he had this opportunity and it was a welcome change from the sedentary life he'd recently built for himself. With a twinge, he wondered if this was more what he wanted with life, if going back to the field was where he belonged..

And then he let loose, focusing one bolt down straight into the back of the demon creature, where it splitered through the body like a missile. The instant smell of burnt skin and singed quills wafted through and he looked down, grinning. Direct hit. Of course.

When the ozone and smoke cleared enough for her to see what Thor's strike had done, Sif did a little fist-pump of glee at Thor's success. "Well struck!" she called over the comms.

Then she moved in to make sure the thing was dead, and if it wasn't, to finish it, expecting T'Challa alongside her.

(There would be plenty of opportunity to collect its blood off of her blade, if nothing else.)

T'Challa had gotten out of the way, since he didn't particularly wish to be struck by lightning even while wearing the panther habit. But it was indeed a spectacular show, the creature belly-up and struck directly in a vulnerable, fleshy spot - which would be its undoing.

The smell of scorched meat tickled his nostrils - not as pleasant as one of those 4th of July barbecues Americans were so fond of (colonizers, honestly) but certainly...strong. If nothing else.

"Yes, good shot, my friend," he added. "We ought to assist with evacuating civilians, now that the creature is no longer a threat." There were plenty of people to help, and they were panicked - however, panic made people stupid, so the sooner they got to that, the better.

Natasha had halted the containing salvos of missiles bursts once Thor and everyone else had gotten closer. She was scanning the area for more threats. Thankfully the confines of the Quinjet saved her from what must be an atrocious smell.

One threat taken care of even though there was likely going to be an extensive amount of cleanup to deal with after. They would rebuild. They always did.

"Agreed. I'm going to head back to where I left the remote loudspeaker and see who's still left over there then do widening sweeps outward to ensure we don't miss anyone," she said into the comms.

"I'll assist you, Natasha," Stephen replied, dropping his hands as the shields dissipated into dying embers. He was closer to where the speakers were left behind. The least he could do right now was help anyone severely injured by opening portals to Metro General, where Christine was.

He watched as some of Stark's drones zipped down, probably being run by F.R.I.D.A.Y. If they were directed to look for samples, it was going to be difficult on an electrically cooked corpse.

"I can open portals to one of the other teams if they need help," he offered. It might be more efficient to get anyone from Team Two to those areas that were hit even harder than this one.
