open thread: When Kaiju Attack
Who: Open. CLOSED (2/2 @ 11 PM Pacific).
What: The Avengers tackle an attack on the city, on three fronts.
When: One weekday afternoon, mid-January.
Where: various locations.

    CURRENT TEAMS & AGENTS: HERE.

Threading Timeline: 1/15/2020 to 2/2/2020 (threads will be frozen at 11 PM, Pacific). This event takes place over the course of one day, depicting only one moment in time. That means that other logs can be posted at any time after this and mention clean up efforts.

Plot Summary, Map, and Size Comparison: HERE.

Notes: Monsters are NPCs but you can mention monster actions/reaction/descriptions in your tags to get a hit in. Also, it's ok to post things set after the monster attack or mention it happening in network posts or logs! Clean up operations will be ongoing the day after the attack and it will take weeks to clean up the mess. A news post toward the end of the month will address that as an ongoing situation.

Team Threads: To help with communication, we'll try something new. If anyone needs to post a plan or change of plans to their teammates, or to say something to another team, you can communicate in your own team thread by putting "message to ____" in the subject line of each post, filling in the blank with a name or team number. That way, someone else knows to look there and can reply with a brief message!

If anyone playing a team member gets RL busy, it's ok to excuse your character to go save a civilian. Just make sure that there are other teammates there capable of taking down the creatures!

S.H.I.E.L.D. agents: Those stationed in each area have the option to interact in either Team Threads or Civilian Threads. They're the only baseline humans that can move through both threads freely. You can have them get caught in the crossfire, or describe what they're doing around each location to help out. Since agents have the same communication device, they can "message to ____" other agents or a nearby Avengers team.

Civilians Thread: It's optional to submit any short narratives here. Because this is a game-wide plot, it counts toward Activity Check!

Civilians (baseline humans) do not have a comm device, only cellphones. They can thread things in the Civilian portion. These threads can happen simultaneously with what's happening in the team fights. That means if something happens in a team thread, you can incorporate that into your thread if they are in the nearby vicinity.

Since it's imperative monsters are stopped ASAP, Avengers can't drop what they're doing to go off and thread with civilians. They have a city and people to save. However, if a fight seems 99% handled, a team member can excuse themselves to assist civilian characters, OR they can interact in this thread directly after a fight is finished.

Have fun!

The Hudson River Park at Pier 25 was unnaturally quiet as a dark shape swam in a serpentine motion through the water. It neared the shore, browned water parting with a mighty splash. The mutated alligator hauled half of its massive body onto dry land, the yellowed reptilian eyes looking around for new prey to snap up.

When its jaws parted, it exposed several rows of jagged teeth, and a foul smell quickly permeated the area. It was noxious enough to make any exposed person's eyes water and lungs burn, having been pumped full of countless chemical cocktails and testing. Its mouth was wide open, thoroughly gassing out the area. Finally, it looked ready to turn and disappear back into the water in search of a boat to snap up, or people further upriver that hadn't heeded warnings to stay away.

Tony didn't care if it rattled windows, he hit the afterburners to get there as fast as he could, sure that Rhodey was hot on his tail. As he flew, Friday was monitoring and reading out updates on the network, helping him reply to posts and arrange the Team roster. It wasn't long until he brought the suit to an abrupt halt, hovering in midair above a monster that was taking up a significant length of the pier it was laying on.

"Friday, scan that thing," he asked and watched as the HUD readout lit up with information. It was nearly sixty feet, and Friday's readout identified it as being more massive than the fossils of Sarcosuchus imperator. There was a lot of bite force there, all contained in an alligator that looked to weigh several tonnes. That meant it was going to be like trying to take down a highly aggressive whale. One with toxic breath. Literally, not figuratively.

The very air felt like it rumbled as the monster began to move, trying to turn and push itself off the pier and back into the water. It wouldn't be great if it swam further upstream toward a more populated area, with buildings even closer to the waterfront. To the south was Rockefeller Park. Maybe he could lure it there, where they could try to get it on dry land and not have to be slowed down with a fight it in the water the whole time.

It was worth a shot.

That's what Tony did. He swooped down and aimed a shot right at its nose.

The first blast of a repulsor caught it off guard, it's tail splashing angrily in the water, jaws nearly snapping shut on him. The more he made it angry, the better chance they had of keeping it from leaving. Once Rhodey and the kid got there, they would be able to give Bruce time to change and wrestle a giant gator.

He unloaded one shoulder compartment of mini-missiles as he flew along one side of the thrashing animal. Before the tail could hit him, he shot up suddenly and hovered above its height capability, which was a good idea, since it tried to rear up and bite him.

"Ok, you guys," he told his team over the comm, "I got a plan. Going to try to get it off this pier and move it to Rockefeller Park. Friday, send everyone those coordinates. If we can get it to stick around, it'd be a good staging area for Hulk to smash it. Rhodey, you're my wingman. Spiderling, slow it down by aiming at the legs and mouth. Bobbi, keep the area clear. And it'd be a good idea to avoid it breathing or drooling on anyone. It'd be like making out with a Komodo dragon."

Rhodey moved into position, ready with the big gun in case it was needed once they got the monster further away from civilians. "On it, Tony.

"How come we always get these ugly mofos?" The stench from the gator-creature's breath reached where he was, though his suit kept him from the smell and damaging acids, and he winced just at the sight of it. "Gonna need to wash our suits after this. Looks like you already got its attention--do you want to switch off or just make sure it doesn't have you for lunch?"

As soon as Peter's transport reached the area where Tony and Rhodey were, he swung down towards the chaos, herding a few straggling civilians out of the way first. As much his memories of Thanos' host of creatures had gotten him used to the idea of monsters being very much real, the sight of the giant alligator thrashing in the water was still startling.

"This thing's like right out of that movie, you know? Lake Placid?" Peter leapt out to web the gator's lower jaw, yanking down hard as he used that leverage to skim across the water. He landed back on southern part of the pier, hoping to draw it's attention so they could keep leading it towards the park. "I might be able to web its mouth shut." There was no telling how long his webbing would hold up, but targeting its ability to spew toxicity seemed like a good - if maybe risky - bet. "Think I should try?"

"Do it." Rhodey's voice came over the comms. "You need to get closer? One of us can come down and you can catch a ride." Shutting the thing's mouth was the best way to protect the civilians and that was a high priority. Plus the ride would mean that Peter could get down to the park quicker and prepare anything he needed to do there.

"I don't know, but they are ugly. At least things are consistent, and the kid is still spewing movie references during fights," said Tony, who knew what movie that was. "Still nowhere near as b-movie as Sharknado was."

The mega-gator began thrashing, the colossal tail colliding with Tony, knocking the air out of him and sending him flying back over the river. The stabilizers kicked in automatically, bringing him to a mid-air hover. It was then that Friday chimed in, "That tensile strength won't hold. The size differential from a normal alligator is three-hundred-and-sixty-one-point-five percent. The average bite strength of a normal alligator at two-thousand-nine-hundred-and-eighty PSI scaled up by that percent would be...."

"Shit," Tony said, which covered the math in his head. He said over the comm, "Careful rewebbing if it snaa-!"

The gator strained to open its mouth, powerful jaw muscles snapping the webbing like silly string. It kept its mouth wide open afterward, as though it knew better than to get webbed with a fully closed mouth a second time.

"...-aps," Tony finished in a much smaller voice. "You're going to need to web its entire face for that to work."

The mega-gator let out an angry rumble that rippled the surface of the water and began to rush at Spider-man and War Machine with snapping jaws. It was clear that the gator was not only raging angry but now it meant to get revenge by having them for lunch. Tony zipped forward and began firing repulsor blasts at it from the opposite direction, hoping to get its attention. It didn't work. The focus was on his best friend and teenage protege.

"Park. Head south, further to the park and away from the water," Tony blurted out in a rush, still firing at it without effect. He silently hoped that being away from water would slow it down and that Bruce wasn't having trouble going green right now. He wasn't about to bother Bruce by checking in over the comm, in case it was distracting. Bruce and Bobbi heard everything anyway.

The warning tingle up the base of Peter's neck told him what Tony's quick calculations soon revealed - the webbing wasn't strong enough. "Crap," Peter said, throwing another web aimed towards the monster's eye if only to slow it down for the split second he needed to get out of the way. The gas made his eyes water even though his suit. "Please don't eat me please don't eat me."

Peter swung in a zig-zag pattern to give the alligator some confusion on where it should attack. He continued to lead it south while tossing back rounds of taser webbing, keeping it irritated and fixated where he and Rhodey were headed. He was at a disadvantage, though, with a lack of heightened skyscrapers and buildings to propel himself speedily from. "Hey Mr. Rhodes sir? That ride sounds good right about now."

Peter latched on as soon as Rhodey was close enough, ready to defend them both if the gator in pursuit got dangerously close.

A hunch-backed creature lumbered out of the water and into Battery Park. It didn't look particularly vicious. Instead, it resembled an unfortunate hybrid, the result of extensive testing on the love child between a porcupine and a badger. It was much slower than the other two beasts while swimming and moving. But when the other two animals tried to fight one another, and then fight it after escaping the island? It was able to keep them at bay due to a protective layer of deadly looking quills covering the entire top and sides of its body.

In truth, it wasn't exactly docile, and its hunger was insatiable. It soon found a stone sculpture and began sharpening its teeth, looking at its surroundings with keen eyes, trying to figure out its next move.

Many smells of food and people were coming from the streets that lay ahead. Once the artwork was worn down to flakes, the monster shook out its quills and began to stomp north, intending to enter the city and eat whatever was in its way.

When Doctor Strange stepped through a portal onto the scene, the spiny creature was halfway through the park. Trees were knocked before it stopped to stomp on artfully arranged rows of weathered wood, once meant to resemble an old barrier against men and horses.

That line of defense obviously wasn't holding up against an angry mutant hedgehog.

Stephen wasted no time in moving his hands before him, following the arcane motions that would form sigils of fiery energy hovering near his hands. Two circles of burning light flickered into being, but he needed far more superior shielding than what he usually used. For that, he gathered his hands together and pushed the shield out with the force of his will, so it became large enough to block the street.

Now, all he had to do was wait until the others arrived. He informed his teammates over the comm device, "I'm in place. It hasn't left the park yet."

"Sif here; I've just arrived," Sif announced not long afterwards. Then, "Odin's beard, that thing is ugly." She brandished her blade. "I think I'll have to give it a shave before I finish it. Who else is with us?"

While she was talking, she moved toward the thing, trying to get a sense of the length of the quills. Sif understood that if she couldn't get it down quickly, she was likely to be the distraction, chopping at its legs and body while another hero or two got above the thing to deliver a killing blow. She was used to dealing with giants; this one was large enough to need a double- or triple-team, though she could have managed more if she weren't confined and worried about civilians.

Getting close to the creature, Sif moved around to try to hamstring the thing. Its posture made the attempt difficult but she used her shield to move in closely and swipe at the back of one leg.

This was what Thor lived for. Action. There was no negotiating with the monster, no treaties to create. No, there was simply the need to fight and that was fine by him.

"I also am present," he responded into the comm to Strange and Sif. With a swift glance at the situation, he nodded approvingly to himself. Sif was trying to incapacitate the creature while Strange was ...doing whatever it is that he did. It involved intricate hand movements, none of which Thor understood. Regardless. He was helping and that was all that mattered.

Flying himself over to the creature, he hovered above it, noting impressively its size. The quills would make excellent spears... lifting Stormbreaker, he channeled lightning but wouldn't discharge. Not until Sif was out of the way....and then he realized what he thought were little bugs were civilains, still rushing around. Cursing, he reached up to his comm.

"We need to clear this area. I will not be able to use my powers until such time. I have no interest in creating a diplomatic incident."

"Welcome, Thor! King T'Challa and Lady Natasha are on the way and can lead the clearance," Sif replied. Over the comms, there was a crash as she kept the thing from stepping on her. "I have its attention for now. Tell me when I need to get clear."

It was still moving, but Thor could see she'd injured it, and it was now annoyed. At her.

Natasha had taken over piloting the Quinjet when she'd gotten close to the scene. "Hey, folks, I'll start guiding the civilians out of here."

She set the Quinjet down close to where people were running toward in a frenzy. She cued up the loudspeaker. "Everyone, please come this way. Please clear the area and get to safety as quickly and orderly as possible."

She set the jet to play that message on repeat as she lowered the ramp and moved outside to take stock of the situation.

At Brooklyn Bridge Park, at the base of the legendary Brooklyn Bridge, a rough beast picked up a truck with a clawed paw. It looked like the cross between a mutated wolf and a bear, with a temperament to match. The beast threw the vehicle with ease at the police officers, who had opened fire without making a dent. The bullets were too small to penetrate its thick hide, leaving nothing more than bloody pockmarks. The truck sailed over their heads, crashing into a brick building as the beast let out a primal roar that shook the ground beneath them and sent puffs of foamy saliva flying from its mouth.

As it turned to climb up the bridge, its back was exposed, thick hide marred by blisters and sores from the countless diseases it had been exposed to. Worried about possible contagions, several cops ran back to avoid anything being hit with any of the falling saliva or blood. But before they could flee entirely, it snatched up a pawful of unlucky officers and chewed them up, beady black eyes showing nothing but blind rage and pure hate.

Since all three of them could fly, that's how they approached the hulking beast. Of course, they were quick to make sure they had a full view of the situation before heading in. The last thing Carol wanted was for there to be actual damages. They had to help the police, so that was a point of attack. She didn't care much about the saliva or blood, she didn't think anything like that could hurt her. Still they had to get in there before more damage was done.

"Well I'm gonna go beat the crap out of that thing. I'm thinking if we can keep this thing distracted long enough for me to zap it into hell or something. I don't know if I can punch through it? But I'm gonna try."

"I can do distractions," Sam said, hitting some buttons on his suit to let loose his red wings. They were just the right size to buzz around the creature's head and annoy it. Hopefully long enough to allow Carol to get into the right punching position. "Hope, see any vulnerable spots that Carol can target?"

He was utterly clueless when it came to that sort of thing, but she was smart, so maybe she'd have biological knowledge.

Punching through something was always a good plan. Hope was the size of her codename, a stronger-than-she-looked wasp; her particular punches packed a wallop, even at this size. But Carol would surely be able to literally blast the beast with something stronger than Hope's stingers.

"Go for the eyes," she advised, flying around the creature's head, letting loose a few stinger blasts of her own to serve as sufficient distraction - she aimed for the sores on its back, because sizzling flesh no doubt hurt, even if it wouldn't take the thing down completely. She actually felt sorry for it - whoever did this reminded her of Cross, and that was an association that was not flattering.

"At least blinding it will get it to slow down, I'm thinking."

While the beast had been pawing at the buzzing drone around its head before, those blasts on its back did hurt. The monster howled in a blinded rage caused by raw pain, clawing at the ground and at nearby buildings before it broke into a run.

All four paws hammered against the ground. There was only one destination in its path, directly ahead. It was heading straight for the Brooklyn Bridge.

"Go for the eyes. Got it." That she could definitely do. She took off after that, leaping into the air and started flying for the hulking beast. She tried to make sure she wasn't swatted out of the air, and let forth with some powerful blasts.

She sped up faster, trying to catch up to it before it hit the bridge, raising up her arms, she went for the eyes, giving it a full blast before getting up as close as she could to punch it in the face.

Around these combat zones, there were always people trying to secure the area or treat injuries. At the same time, other people were trying to get in and sneak a peek. It may not be wise, but human curiosity has always been a powerful compulsion.

Some will get hurt. Others will narrowly escape danger.

Regardless of what happens, there will be many tales to tell of this day.

Phone call to Jane

To say that Metro General was swamped was an understatement.

In times of crisis, it seemed that people always went to two places: church or the hospital. The line ups were mind boggling, and every single pair of hands was being used up triaging, administering blankets, trying to manage shock, suturing minor wounds and at times trying to locate next of kin.

Christine was grateful that their morgue was mostly full -- it prevented those kinds of admittance at least.

After several hours of non-stop moving, having to even do a few surgical procedures in the er bay (and she was so grateful nothing bad had happened -- that would have been an insurance nightmare), she finally had to stop. Going to her favourite linen closet, she opened a water bottle, took a bite of a granola bar and called Jane.

"How do you do it?," Christine blurted out when Jane answered. "Know that someone you love is out there, doing crazy fucked up things, and you can't do a single thing to help. Worrying is useless because I am literally sewing scalps back on, and have fingers to re-attach and I have no time for that but wow. Wow. Did you see what Carol did? Or Sif? How do we even know these people?" A pause. "And are you okay? Where are you?"

Because at the end of the day, that's what this was. Work. They were superheroes first. Stephen had said as much to Christine repeatedly: that his role was first and foremost the most important thing in his life.

This wasn't new, Stephen had always been a workoholic. It was easier to understand when it was surgery though, not saving the world.

"I'm human and fragile too, which is why I'm calling you right now because I might be close to having a little panic attack." She took a large bite of her granola bar and chewed. "Or it's low blood sugar. Both are very possible."
