Awareness Night: Fundraiser for St. Mungo's

[for more information about what this event is all about, click here.]

• Created to mimic the feel of many architectural and artistic designs around the world, both magical and muggle alike, the International Wizarding Museum serves as more of a beacon of tolerance than any other place in Wizarding Europe. The point of the museum and gallery was to display that talent (and taste) is a universal concept that trascends blood barriers. Though the museum is only known of my those of wizarding association, it has generally been well-received by those stemming from muggle families, or knowledgeable of the muggle world.
• Its collection features galleries of either original or replicas of artifacts or other artwork created by both magical and muggle artists. Anything that might potentially be in danger of disappearing likely has its replica on display. Security around these objects will be at max levels, whether they're the real or fake version.
• As this event is later in the evening, there is no formalized sit down dinner. There are, however, four large tables of assorted foods (everyone can find something they like!), and a full dining area to sit down to eat and chat in. Some of the snack foods are heavy enough to constitute as a meal all on their own, but the fourth table is nothing more than an expansive dessert bar.
• On the opposite side of the room from the dining is a full bar, though there are waiters rushing around everywhere with champagne to keep guests happy as well. Bartenders and waiters have been instructed to keep a sharp eye on guests, and have been giving the right to refuse more drinks to anyone they might thing has gone over their limit.
• The press is here! They have been instructed to be subtle and not force too much attention to anyone that doesn't want it but don't be surprised if you end up in a photo or two!
• Designed to mimic the Hall of Mirrors in Herrenchiemsee Castle, the ballroom is by far one of the most impressive rooms in the building.
• For a reprieve from the social aspects of the party, a few exhibits will be open, though most of the museum is closed off for the evening to keep a controlled eye on guests and events. One "exhibit" that will be open out back though are the world famous gardens, which offer a break from the party and fair amount of solitude for anyone that might need it.
• And of course, since this is a charity event, there are a few discreet but easily located tables set up where guests can go and donate more than what they paid for their tickets, if they so desire. One group, specifically sponsored by the Carrows, will be there with more information on conditions and illness that are less common to those with magical blood. They will also do a short presentation near their booth at 10:00PM/22:00 for anyone interested to know more.
• At midnight, a moment of silence for Charity Burbage will be held in the main ballroom.

Watching the people, Laura wasn't quite sure how she felt about the ball. It wasn't exactly her scene, Jules had come by and dressed them up, Laura had chosen a short blue dress and sparkly heels and felt quite grown up, but almost wished she was back at the beach with Ellie instead of here.

Then, a waiter had come by with a place containing glasses of champagne and Laura had snapped a glass up and now, now everything seemed much better.

Ellie watched as Laura took the glass of champagne and bit her lip. "Are we allowed to drink that, do you think?" Up until then she'd been drinking pumpkin juice, but if Laura could do it, then so could she. Feeling daring, and like she was about to get caught, she took a glass from the tray of the next waiter that passed, and sipped.

"It's fizzy," she said with a giggle as the bubbles tickled her nose. "Laura, this is like. So much fun! I love dressing up. And I'm glad you're here."

"What're they gonna do?" Laura asked, shrugging. "Kick us out?" It wouldn't really bother her all that much if they got sent home. She finished her glass and dropped it on the tray of a passing waiter. "We're practically adults anyway," she said, taking another flute and taking a sip.

"I guess," she shrugged, looking at all the fancy people in their fancy dresses. "I'd like it just us, too."

Ellie decided she liked champagne. She too, took a second flute and sipped it, nibbling on another quiche. "Have you tried these?" she asked absently.

But when Laura spoke, she smiled softly and moved closer. "I like it just us as well," she said quietly. The champagne was just starting to make her head feel fizzy - it was a nice feeling, she thought. "I think, if I had to pick just one person to be dropped on a desert island with, I'd pick you."

Laura grabbed a few quiches as a waiter moved by, nibbling on the edge of one. "Mmm," she murmured, glancing around and spotting a pair of chairs at a mostly empty table and tugging Ellie over with her. "Why would we be on a desert island?" She asked, furrowing her brows and glancing back at her friend.

"I dunno," Ellie said. "Zombies, or killer bunnies or something. Or we're marooned, because we're shipwrecked. When people ask you what you'll take to a desert island, they never tell you why you're there - just that you're there, and you've got to deal with it."

She looked up at Laura, blue eyes wide with curiosity. "Would you want me?" she asked.

"I'd rather not be on a desert island," Laura shrugged, finishing her champagne. She looked across at Ellie, stretching her leg out and poking her friend. "But who else would I have with me?"

"I dunno," Ellie said again. She reached for a third champagne. "You know, I don't understand why people say this stuff is so bad. It's not really doing anything, except making me a little bit fuzzy."

She pointed out Sally-Anne, and told Laura about the older girl's woes and how her mother had set her up with a boring man. "I'm so glad Mummy doesn't do that to me," she giggled.

"Now she could set you up with blokes or birds," Laura pointed out, waving over a waiter and stealing h'ors douvres from him, grinning up at him and waggling her eyebrows.

He smiled back at her and promised he'd be back soon. "The fuzziness is the bad thing," she pointed out after the waiter left. "If you get too fuzzy, you don't know what you're doing."

Watching this interaction, Ellie began to pout. "Why do you have to do that? I'm right here!" she hissed. "Why can't you just... hang out with me and have that be enough? You always do that thing with your eyebrows that means you want to... to... do stuff with him!"

She stood up, unsure if she intended to leave Laura there or forgive her on the spot. "Why am I not enough for you to have a good time with for an evening?"

Confused, Laura looked at her friend, not sure what she was so upset about. She hadn't even really been flirting with the waiter, not really, she'd just been acting like she always did. "What are you talking about?" she asked, frowning up at her friend.

The drink was loosening Ellie's tongue at perhaps the worst possible time. "That thing you do, where you wink at them and they wink back, and then later you do stuff with them, and you don't even know them. And you know all you have to do is the wink, or the eyebrow waggles, because they'll come running because boys are stupid and you are beautiful."

Tears came to her eyes but she blinked them away. Jules had put effort into her make up and she wasn't going to ruin it for a little tantrum. "I just want you to... see me. Is it that you think those boys will make you happy? None of them cares about you even a fraction as much as I do, and you don't even notice."

Shocked, Laura looked up at Ellie, shaking her head. "I wasn't... I just was thanking him!" she protested, before the rest of Ellie's words sunk in. "Of course I notice you! You're my best friend, El." She shook her head and frowned, unable to explain how she was feeling. She didn't really like hooking up with random boys, not in the long term. It was fun at the time, she liked being able to make them feel good, make herself useful, but afterwards she felt empty and she didn't know how to express that to Ellie.

"I'm your best friend," Ellie said, still pouting, her voice sulky. "I'm your best friend. If that's true then how come you've got no idea how I feel?"

She cleared her throat and looked Laura dead in the eye. "I just want you to understand," she began, then stopped. How could she expect Laura to understand what she didn't fully understand herself? "You're my favorite," she finished weakly, willing Laura to just get it.

"I don't... I don't understand," Laura frowned, furrowing her brows in confusion. "What... how do you feel?" Ellie wasn't making any sense and Laura put down her champagne, wondering if it was the alcohol or her friend that was being confusing.

"I feel..." Ellie took Laura's hand and placed it on her heart. "Like you're in here. And that keeps me warm, but..."

She floundered her arms helplessly. "But when you go off with boys and do stuff, that makes me cold, and sad. And I like kissing you, cos that makes me warm, but when you tell me that I don't know what I want, that makes me cold." God, she sounded like a three year old and she knew it, but her head was rather fuzzy and it was an effort just to get words out, let alone words that made sense, so in a way she thought she had done rather well.

Laura didn't quite know what to say to that and tried to keep the confusion and almost panic off her face. She felt almost scared, overwhelmed by what her friend was saying. She knew what Ellie was trying to say, even if Ellie herself didn't. She couldn't be with Ellie, not like that, she would only end up screwing everything up, like she always did.

"Ellie," Laura shook her head. "You're my best friend." She said, for lack of anything else to say, sure that anything she attempted would only end badly, with all the champagne whirling around her system.

"Good," Ellie said, finally taking Laura's words at face value. "That's what I want." She leaned in and pulled Laura into a hug. "I want you to be my best friend. I want us to always be... best... friends."

She pulled back slightly, but kept her arms loosely around Laura. "I just... I know you're sad all the time, and I hate that I can't fix it, but really, all I want is to make you smile. You've got such a pretty smile. I think, years from now, when we're done from school and living out in the world, I'm still gonna want to be around you." She smiled at Laura, eyes slightly glazed, lips curved slightly crookedly. "So can I?"

"I'm not sad all the time," Laura countered softly, hugging her friend tightly. In fact, the only time she was happy was when Ellie was around, when it was just the two of them with no one else and nothing else around.

She cut herself off, though, because Ellie was still talking and when she finished, Laura nodded emphatically. "Of course!" she assured her friend. "You better be."

"Good," Ellie said. She leaned in again and brushed her lips over Laura's cheek, then her mouth, "Cos you'll always be my favorite."

Through her semi-inebriated gaze she registered that Laura might not want her kissing her in public, and she sucked in a breath, looking in her eyes nervously.

Kissing Ellie back, Laura missed the hesitance in her friend's face and ended up just tipping her head to the side, dropping it onto Ellie's shoulder. She wrapped an arm around the other girl and gave her a quick hug. "You'll be mine."

When Laura kissed back, Ellie allowed herself to sink into it blissfully for the short moment it was happening. "You wanna get out of here?" she asked. It was almost midnight, the moment of silence for Professor Burbage couldn't be far away, and then they could thank Jules and go home to bed.

"You look really beautiful tonight, did I tell you that yet?" she asked, turning her head to nuzzle Laura's cheek gently. "Let's snuggle tonight, instead of separate beds."

Ellie's words almost sounded like a line, but she knew her friend was serious and she was eternally grateful for that. "Yeah, I would." She hugged Ellie again before pulling back to finish her champagne.

"I'll snuggle, just as soon as we can get out of these dresses," she smiled, eating the last quiche.
