Break Out the Champagne (Open to all)
The votes were in and the announcement had been made. Jack's campaign manager had already made arrangements for a victory party, just in case. This was a new concept to him. Back home, when his mother had been dethroned, the citizens had celebrated in the streets. But there hadn't been a party to celebrate his victory. Of course, that was because it really wasn't his victory at all. He'd worked behind the scenes to set things up, but in the end it had been Alice that had made it possible for them take back Wonderland and free the Oysters (and the general populace from the addiction to the false emotions bottled in tea form that had been generated from the Oysters).

All the same, Jack was just a little bit uncomfortable with being treated as though he'd had a great accomplishment by winning the election. Becoming the leader of a place wasn't a prize to be won. It was a duty, and for sure an honor that he'd won. But an achievement? No. Making things better for those who lived here would be an achievement, if he could accomplish it.

So while he didn't feel that he 'deserved' a party, he was here nonetheless. His campaign manager had insisted that it was a good way to get to know those who had voted for him, and to start earning their trust as leader.

Jack straightened his tie and surveyed the reception hall. Waiters in tuxedos milled around with trays of champagne and h'ors d'oeurves while a few security guards watched the perimeter. A band struck up the first few chords of a song and a few people in formalwear had started to arrive,

Unfortunately, Jack thought that if the boy with the vividly colored spiky hair decided to crash, the security force wouldn't be able to keep him out. But since the last rally, no one had complained about him wearing his sword wherever he went.

OOC: any characters are welcome, and feel free to socialize amongst yourselves as well as giving your character the chance to meet and greet the new mayor.

What was she doing here? Hadn't she fed the paparazzi enough fuel? There wasn't enough spin control in any dimension that could smooth things out, but maybe that was the point. Zee had lived in the public eye often enough and long enough as a stage magician she knew that the press was a fact of life. If she was going to get back into having an act, and getting a League going again she couldn't hide in Shadowcrest. Besides, she felt she still owed Jack for the shower thing.

So, here she was in a long formal gown of ruby red. The fabric clung in all the right places to show off all the right things without being indecent. As a waiter came by she plucked a flute of the ginger colored bubbly stuff, gave the man a nod and a smile then went to mingle. Her first sip might have been taken to gain some artificial courage but she would never admit it.

Fred wasn't there yet, though he did hope she would attend. He'd assumed she would, but the last few weeks of the campaign hadn't left them much time to talk.

Jack was relieved, then, to see a familiar face. Even if the memories with that familiar face were slightly embarrassing. He made his way over to the woman in red and smiled at her.

"Zatanna. Glad you could make it," he said with a genuine grin.

She turned when she heard her name and smiled brightly to see their new mayor. "Hello, Jack." She lifted her glass of champagne to him. "Congratulations." Politics weren't her thing, but if this was something someone wanted then congratulations were definitely in order.

Fred was running late. It had taken her much too long to fight the dress free from the closet. It had been the one that the City had given her the night of the ball, a very strange ball. Or it looked a good deal like it. She didn't know she was supposed to dress formally, so she'd shown up in a nice little party dress only to rush back home to see if she was lucky enough to have something a little more appropriate. Thus the closet fighting and the lateness.

"I didn't know they did this sort of thing for mayors. Governors sure, but mayors?" She would have continued the conversation with the man in the tux, but he walked away to gather up glasses. Right, he was working. Well, that wasn't embarrassing. She missed the strong Fred, and wondered why she hadn't kept to her decision that she was the new, improved Fred. She also wondered why she hadn't seen Eric in a while; she was beginning to miss him just a little. She'd look for him soon enough. Maybe.

The brainy female stepped to the side, out of the way to watch. She was proud of Jack, happy for him, and she believed he could do the job. He had helped to take back Wonderland, hadn't he? He wanted to be fair, right, and all that. She also felt a weird little turn in her stomach when she spotted him with Zatanna, Zee...It wasn't jealousy right out. It was something else. They did make a pretty couple. Then again, so had Zee and Oliver. It looked like the pair were about to be captured once again by the photo hogs.

Jack returned Zee's cheeky smile with a grin of his own.

"Much. What was that you just said?"

He had heard something mumbled under the breath though he wasn't even sure it was English.

"So, how are you adjusting to the City?" he asked politely.

He wasn't going to ask her if she was still teleporting into people's bathrooms. Not given the fact that she had gotten so upset when Fred had brought it up last time they'd run into each other.

She shrugged a shoulder, her smile turning a bit sheepish as she shifted her weight and hitched up her skirt enough to reveal her ankle braced in a way that still allowed for heels. A small chuckle came from her as she released the skirt of her gown letting it fall to the floor again. "I'm taking teleporting off of the bill for my act."

She made a small face for her misfortune with that then grinned. "What I said was 'overexposed', but backwards. Little incantation hexing their cameras. There won't be a single useable photo until they point those things at someone not me." That impish grin was back before she took a sip of the champagne again.

"Where's Fred?" Zee expected to see her with Jack at his celebration and her brows lifted.

"Probably a good plan," Jack said with a chuckle. "Though I have to say, popping into people's showers is certainly one way to make new friends."

He nodded to one of the photographers and smiled for the camera, despite the knowledge that the shot wouldn't turn out.

"Think you could teach me that spell?" he asked, though of course she couldn't. And he was learning the hard way that being photographed and written about was all part of the package.

"Fred's..." Jack frowned. "Well, she should have been here already."

He looked around, and it was then that he spotted his girlfriend with the blonde who had been ridiculously drunk the last time he'd seen her. He attempted to catch Fred's eye to wave her over and felt a slight surge of relief as he didn't see a drink in the blonde's hand. He could only hope that she'd learned some self-control since that slightly disastrous night out.

She chuckled after she'd taken a sip then wrinkled her nose a little with a grin and a wink. "No. But I could make you a charm that would hex a camera within thirty feet of you. It could even be as discreet as a tietack."

She glanced around as he did but he spotted the others first. Her smile lifted when she saw Dinah and Fred and she lifted her hand in a wave as well, trying to catch Dinah's attention. She had good news for her fellow leaguer she hadn't had a chance to share yet.

"Oh, I'm fine," Dinah said. "I wouldn't heal as quickly as you can think. But you do this as long as I have and you learn that the right foundation can work wonders."

She studied Fred for a minute, then gave her a sympathetic smile.

"It's a little odd dating someone who's in the political arena," she said. "Ollie was mayor of Star City for awhile, and it was... well, it kept him busy. But you get used to it eventually. Especially when you know they're doing the right thing. And as long as you're not having public fights or any other sort of craziness, the paparazzi loses interest quickly enough."

She still felt bad about her part in inviting Fred out and arranging a situation wherein Fred, Jack, and Zatanna (as well as Oliver) would be featured in a-she assumed-completely fabricated story. She wouldn't bring it up, but she was leaving the conversation open in case Fred wanted to talk about it.

"Mm?" Fred gave Dinah a slightly distracted look, then laughed softly. "We don't really fight. Actually we don't know each other well enough to fight. Isn't that weird? You either fight from knowing people to little or too much, and we really aren't in either category. I know him well enough, but not so well that we've discussed things that could be upsetting."

"No, I'm just watching them. She's very pretty. And she doesn't seem to mind being out in public. She's a magician, right? That's her cover, or is she really one? That can get a little confusing. If she can do magic, is she always on the clock? Does she count as a magician when she can do magic because magicians don't do magic magic but magic." Fred shrugged and turned to look at Dinah, giving the other woman her full attention, somewhat.

"I think they look very nice together. She probably would look nice with anyone though. Him too. He'll be great as mayor." She just wasn't sure how great she'd be as the mayor's girlfriend. No one had even thought of taking pictures of her; well, one person had started to walk over, seeing as Dinah had been captured in the papers recently too. He was apparently coming over to get a snap of the pretty blond to show off the guests who'd come to the party.

Dinah looked over at Fred. She wasn't quite sure what to say about a relationship where they didn't know each other quite well enough to fight.

"I'm pretty sure that Jack's interested in you and not Zatanna," she reassured Fred. "And Zee wouldn't try to steal someone else's boyfriend."

Fred gave Dinah a strange look; the statement, Fred knew, was supposed to make her feel better, but honestly it made her wonder.

"I wasn't even thinking that. I was actually thinking that a relationship with someone who was used to the spotlight and who flourished in it would be better than someone who liked to work in the background. Course, some politicians keep their other halves in the background for that reason or others." That was when Fred noticed not one wave but two.

"We've been spotted." Fred waved back, not realizing at first Jack was actually waving her over. Then with a soft laugh, she lightly took Dinah's arm and started guiding the blond over. "I'd really like you to meet Jack." Fred thought Dinah should probably meet the man when she was sober; it'd be good for both of them.

The hunter was in the wrong place. It was how this usually worked; he decided to do something fun, and he ended up in the wrong place. These sorts of parties really weren't his thing, but free booze and eats, how could he stay away?

Dean Winchester nodded to one of the waiters, grabbing two glasses of champagne from the tray as it passed. He didn't have a date, and he didn't have a case. He'd done a little ghost hunting the previous night, and he did wonder what one of these shindigs would be like. He guessed it would be exactly like the fiasco that had had Sam dancing with Mrs. Haversham (hey, he saw the movie after the fact). It was damn creepy, but pretty damn funny.

So, there he was, quickly downing one flute and setting it on a passing tray before sipping the other. Well, he'd plan on sipping it. He saw Dinah. It wasn't that he was avoiding her, so much as he was avoiding her and the woman she was with. What was it with the names and the faces around here? He finished off the second glass, grabbed a third, asked for directions to the bar where there would hopefully be harder stuff, and looked for some place to hide...no, place himself strategically until he had a better advantage for enjoying the party. He really shouldn't have come.

He probably shouldn't have told Sam where he'd be, or left a note for Jimmy/Castiel. This was probably one of his not so great ideas.

"Well, you can get a refill and we can sit in there," Dinah gestured toward the bar area. She didn't spot the hunter as she led Zee over to the bar.

"I'll be sticking to soda though," she said. "Considering that the first time I drank wine in the City, I ended up drugged and kidnapped by vampires. And the second time, I ended up taking a break from Harry. And, well, you know about the third time. I'm kind of 0 for 3 here, so nonalcoholic it is."

She gave Zee a breezy smile as if to say that perhaps she would fill her in on those stories later. Not exactly topics she wanted to discuss on what was supposed to be an evening of celebration.

She was actually so intent on finding a seat that she didn't spot Dean right away once they'd sat just down the bar from him.

Instead, she looked at Zatanna with a raised eyebrow. There had definitely been a look that indicated that Zee had something to tell her.

"OOooh-kay. You're on the wagon, girl!" Zee giggled as she walked towards the bar with Dinah with just the slightest of limps, thanks. "But hopefully the third time ended up with stupid faces and grunty noises." She grinned unabashedly.

Zatanna didn't see Dean. She'd only met him the once and had been a bit distracted (and some small amount of insulted by him) that night. She slid onto a barstool then made herself comfortable. "Ollie's in for the League. He thought there already was one and was just waiting for the next job. And at least one detective on the City payroll will have our backs."

A wandering waiter came by and she reached out to nab a new glass of bubbly then spotted Dean finally and did a bit of a doubletake. "....great."

Dean nearly choked when he saw two particular women head into the bar. He'd come into the bar to avoid them in the first place, and now they came in here? It really wasn't his night. He finished off the scotch, paid for it, and started on his way out.

Maybe if they didn't see him, they wouldn't stop him. Maybe he could get out of this damn place before it got nasty, very nasty. He walked on determined to make his escape, but his plan was quickly changed when he saw yet another woman who'd give him grief, more so than the two in the bar.

He stood for a moment at the bar's entrance. He looked from the intrepid reporter to the two superheroes at the bar. He backed into the bar and tried to go unnoticed. It wasn't often that Dean hid from beautiful women, even the ones that could kill him.

Luckily for Dean, Lois walked right by the bar without looking inside. She was working, so alcohol was a no-no. Instead, she had her eyes set on the man of the hour. She was going to get a few good quotes before the night was done. Though she would at least wait until he'd had the chance to dance to one or two songs with his girlfriend before cutting in.

If she did see the hunter though, it wouldn't be pretty. When she'd found out that her notebook was missing, she'd been pretty unhappy to say the least. Sure, she had some of the notes elsewhere. But that notebook was her lifeline. There was everything she needed for several stories-even a few pages where she'd started writing her stories and just needed to type them up.

Tracking Dean down and getting her notebook back, as well as making him pay for what he'd done was a high priority. But right now, she had an assignment and this was the best chance to get face time with the new mayor and get the exclusive before anyone else.

Fred breathed a little better once they were outside, away from all the craziness that was the party. Her fingers squeezed Jack's once more as she finally came to a stop. She didn't look at him directly. Her eyes lifted to the sky, as much as she knew she should talk to him, she didn't want to. She wasn't even sure what she wanted to say to him.

"You do look very nice, Jack," she said as she finally looked up at him rather than the sky. Her free hand lifted to brush off his lapel; it didn't need it, but she needed to do something.

"It's nice out here. You won't get to be outside very much. You'll be very busy." She didn't sound as if she were complaining. "You'll be taking care of everyone in the City; I think that's amazing, Jack." Yes, she was still putting off whatever was on her mind. Sort of.

Jack squeezed Fred's hand as well, and then he lifted his free hand to smooth some hair out of her face. He leaned in, about to kiss her.

"Even mayors need to take time to themselves ever now and then you know. I'll be busy, but there are some things worth making time for."

He didn't get the chance to kiss her, or for Fred to say anything else that she might have had to say. Instead, the doors burst open and a brunette joined them.

Jack turned to her, and she gave Fred the slightest of apologetic smiles, before she flashed her press pass.

"Lois Lane, Dai-City Voice, Mayor Heart. I was hoping I could get a few quotes from you."

Dinah was used to Zee's sense of humor, so she let out a laugh.

"Keep teleporting into people's showers and I'm pretty sure you'll get your wish sooner or later," she teased. "Though," she gestured to Zee's ankle, "teleporting's probably not the best idea. Guess you'll have to pick up your men the old fashioned way."

She winked at her friend.

She was glad that Dean seemed to be slipping into concerned mode and making an effort, and glad that the tension seemed to be easing a bit. She ordered a soda from the bartender and settled into her chair, sipping the soda.

Dean's brow lifted, and he even smirked at the cure. He didn't seem all that bothered by the choice in cure. He settled back on his own seat, picking up his drink and saluting the two women.

"Whatever gets you through those long hard nights." He smirked again before looking around. He really did not need Lois to show up right now; he had enough tension with the bird and the mystic, and at the moment, it wasn't exactly the same sort of tension.

"So, kicked any bad guys' asses lately?" He took another sip of whatever had been set in front of him. He was pretty certain it was the same top shelf stuff he'd been drinking since he got in there.

She gave a wry chuckle as she lifted her glass. "There hasn't been enough of those long hard nights lately, but I try to make due on my own." She grinned and made sure she was out of elbow range of Dinah.

After taking a drink she shook her head. "I'm still settling in. Not that there probably isn't bad guys butts to boot, but I'm out of the loop still."

Lois glared at Fred. She'd done her homework and so she knew about the Mayor's girlfriend. She also knew about the supposed love triangle with Jack, Oliver, and Zatanna.

"I did take care of this. I talked to Mayor Heart's campaign manager and was told that tonight was the time for a meet and greet and that Jack would be happy to answer any questions from members of the press."

She glanced at the pair and realized that she was probably not winning any points here for tenacity. Not to mention that it was pretty clear she was interrupting something.

"But I can see you're in the middle of something. So I'll... be inside when you're done."

She excused herself. Jack was a little bit stunned into silence, by both the reporter and Fred. He turned his attention back to Fred and after a minute, he gave her a small grimace.

"Sorry about that."

Fred hadn't exactly backed down from Lois, and she looked more than ready to give Lois another earful. She relaxed a little when the reporter finally realized that yes, she had been interrupting something. Fred just wasn't sure what Lois had interrupted. She looked back at Jack once they were alone again.

"No, I'm sorry." She took the new mayor by the hand and pulled him closer, and soon both her hands were resting on his chest, letting his hands go where they will for the moment. "I'm proud of you. I think you'll do your best to help the City, and there's so much to do. You're gonna be busy, and you will need time to relax. But, you'll also need someone who's good under pressure like..." Her head tilted the way Lois had just gone, which was also the way of the party.

"Put me in a knife fight against a Pylean - I'd lose and probably scream a little, maybe wet myself a little, and definitely run and hide - but I can handle that. I know how to handle zombies, vampires, demons. Public relations and being in public, not so much. And if I'm honest, I don't think I want to. I can deal with the politics of academia. Sorta been there, done that." She sighed. "But, I'm not built for this. You should have someone who is. Someone who shines in the spotlight, not fades."

She petted over his jacket front again, trying to avoid the tears, trying to keep up the smile. See, she was trying to reassure him.

Jack looked down at Fred and frowned, trying to figure out the right thing to say in this situation.

He put his arms around her and pulled her closer.

"I don't care if you're good in the spotlight. I just like being with you. If you don't want to do the whole," he gestured vaguely in the direction of the party, "Public appearances thing, I understand. We can always see each other outside of situations that have to do with politics, can't we?"
