Break Out the Champagne (Open to all)
The votes were in and the announcement had been made. Jack's campaign manager had already made arrangements for a victory party, just in case. This was a new concept to him. Back home, when his mother had been dethroned, the citizens had celebrated in the streets. But there hadn't been a party to celebrate his victory. Of course, that was because it really wasn't his victory at all. He'd worked behind the scenes to set things up, but in the end it had been Alice that had made it possible for them take back Wonderland and free the Oysters (and the general populace from the addiction to the false emotions bottled in tea form that had been generated from the Oysters).

All the same, Jack was just a little bit uncomfortable with being treated as though he'd had a great accomplishment by winning the election. Becoming the leader of a place wasn't a prize to be won. It was a duty, and for sure an honor that he'd won. But an achievement? No. Making things better for those who lived here would be an achievement, if he could accomplish it.

So while he didn't feel that he 'deserved' a party, he was here nonetheless. His campaign manager had insisted that it was a good way to get to know those who had voted for him, and to start earning their trust as leader.

Jack straightened his tie and surveyed the reception hall. Waiters in tuxedos milled around with trays of champagne and h'ors d'oeurves while a few security guards watched the perimeter. A band struck up the first few chords of a song and a few people in formalwear had started to arrive,

Unfortunately, Jack thought that if the boy with the vividly colored spiky hair decided to crash, the security force wouldn't be able to keep him out. But since the last rally, no one had complained about him wearing his sword wherever he went.

OOC: any characters are welcome, and feel free to socialize amongst yourselves as well as giving your character the chance to meet and greet the new mayor.

"Oh, I'm fine," Dinah said. "I wouldn't heal as quickly as you can think. But you do this as long as I have and you learn that the right foundation can work wonders."

She studied Fred for a minute, then gave her a sympathetic smile.

"It's a little odd dating someone who's in the political arena," she said. "Ollie was mayor of Star City for awhile, and it was... well, it kept him busy. But you get used to it eventually. Especially when you know they're doing the right thing. And as long as you're not having public fights or any other sort of craziness, the paparazzi loses interest quickly enough."

She still felt bad about her part in inviting Fred out and arranging a situation wherein Fred, Jack, and Zatanna (as well as Oliver) would be featured in a-she assumed-completely fabricated story. She wouldn't bring it up, but she was leaving the conversation open in case Fred wanted to talk about it.

"Mm?" Fred gave Dinah a slightly distracted look, then laughed softly. "We don't really fight. Actually we don't know each other well enough to fight. Isn't that weird? You either fight from knowing people to little or too much, and we really aren't in either category. I know him well enough, but not so well that we've discussed things that could be upsetting."

"No, I'm just watching them. She's very pretty. And she doesn't seem to mind being out in public. She's a magician, right? That's her cover, or is she really one? That can get a little confusing. If she can do magic, is she always on the clock? Does she count as a magician when she can do magic because magicians don't do magic magic but magic." Fred shrugged and turned to look at Dinah, giving the other woman her full attention, somewhat.

"I think they look very nice together. She probably would look nice with anyone though. Him too. He'll be great as mayor." She just wasn't sure how great she'd be as the mayor's girlfriend. No one had even thought of taking pictures of her; well, one person had started to walk over, seeing as Dinah had been captured in the papers recently too. He was apparently coming over to get a snap of the pretty blond to show off the guests who'd come to the party.

Dinah looked over at Fred. She wasn't quite sure what to say about a relationship where they didn't know each other quite well enough to fight.

"I'm pretty sure that Jack's interested in you and not Zatanna," she reassured Fred. "And Zee wouldn't try to steal someone else's boyfriend."

Fred gave Dinah a strange look; the statement, Fred knew, was supposed to make her feel better, but honestly it made her wonder.

"I wasn't even thinking that. I was actually thinking that a relationship with someone who was used to the spotlight and who flourished in it would be better than someone who liked to work in the background. Course, some politicians keep their other halves in the background for that reason or others." That was when Fred noticed not one wave but two.

"We've been spotted." Fred waved back, not realizing at first Jack was actually waving her over. Then with a soft laugh, she lightly took Dinah's arm and started guiding the blond over. "I'd really like you to meet Jack." Fred thought Dinah should probably meet the man when she was sober; it'd be good for both of them.

"That would be fantastic," Jack said to Zee in response to the offer to make him a charm to combat photographers. He wouldn't use it all the time, but everyone wanted their privacy sometimes.

He beamed at Fred as she started to lead her blond friend over.

"If you two like each other enough, I'm sure you'll find a way to make it work," Dinah tried to reassure Fred.

She smiled and started to follow Fred over to Jack and Zee.

"I promise not to sing this time," she said with a slightly nervous laugh.

Once Fred was within reach, Jack put his arm around her and gave her a kiss on the cheek.

She nodded at Jack with a smile. "Won't take long. I'll have something sent to City Hall."

Then the other two women joined them and she turned her smile on them. "Hey Dinah. Fred. Great spread huh?" She gave Dinah a brief pointed look that said we gotta talk, girl.

Fred's eyes widened a little when Jack pulled her closer. She wasn't expecting that one, yet she didn't pull away. She just leaned against him a little, smiling a little sheepishly at the two other women.

"Jack, this is Dinah. Dinah, this is Jack." She motioned between the two of them. "You already know Zee." It was a little silly to introduce the two, seeing as they knew each other in such an interesting way.

"You look wonderful, Zee. So does Dinah." She laughed. "And you do, too." She rocked a little to place a kiss on Jack's jaw. It wasn't awkward exactly, but she wasn't sure who was watching, or taking pictures. She really did not want to end up on a newspaper.

Dinah smiled and nodded slightly at Zee. First chance they got, she'd be happy to leave the lovebirds to it and get the scoop on whatever it was Zee wanted to tell her

"And you look beautiful," Jack said to Fred.

He smiled at Dinah and held out his hand.

"Dinah, nice to officially meet you. I've heard a lot about you from Fred."

Dinah returned the smile and shook Jack's hand.

"Likewise. Congratulations. It seems as though the City's in good hands now."

"I certainly hope so," Jack replied. He glanced over at Fred as the band struck up a slower number. "Would you two ladies mind terribly if I stole Fred away for a dance?"

"Please! Go. Dance. Be merry." Zee chuckled with a smile and a wink for Fred and stepped closer to Dinah. "I need a refill then lets find a place to the side."

Fred blushed a little at Zee's wink before she let Jack whisk her away to the dance floor. The last person she'd danced with had...she didn't think she'd danced with Lorne. He'd turned into something of a child, so that hadn't gone over well. She hadn't danced with someone in a while actually.

Jack smiled and nodded as Zee and Dinah took their leave. Then he pulled Fred into his arms and started to sway in time to the music.

"Thank you for being here tonight," he said, his lips just inches from her ear and his tone quiet enough that even the keenest of eavesdroppers couldn't overhear. "Thank you for being there throughout the whole campaign. I know it can't have been easy."

Fred rested her head on his shoulder for the moment. She did like being close to him, especially this close. Her hands were her hands should be. They did fit rather well together, physically, as far as she could tell anyway.

"I'm proud of you, Jack." She whispered back, hoping he heard her. She peeked over at a few of the people around them before closing her eyes and just going with it.

Jack placed a kiss on the top of her head.

"Thank you. I'm glad."

It was nice to just hold her like this and sway to music. It might have been nicer if he didn't have the feeling that they were in some sort of fishbowl.

"Things are going to be busy from now on, but maybe I could make you dinner at my place soon?"

A night in, with maybe a candlelit dinner would be just the thing. Much better than risking getting stalked by the paparazzi. The whole thing was really a bit unnerving. Wonderland didn't really have gossip papers. In fact, his mother hadn't even allowed newspapers to print anything more than what she approved and it wasn't as though the reporters had had much time to enjoy their newfound freedom before he'd ended up here.

"Are you sure?" Fred shifted a little so that she could look at him. She needed to see his face to know that he meant it. "Are you sure you want to be the kind of mayor who has a girlfriend, not a wife?" Her lips thinned a little.

"They're going to think bad things, I'm sure. You've got to be a good guy, right?" She didn't want him to feel bad, and she really did not want him to ruin his term. Or she didn't want to be the reason it was somehow ruined. She didn't want to be his scandal.

Jack's brow furrowed in confusion.

"Are you proposing to me?" he half-joked.

She didn't sound like she was proposing, but he still wasn't quite sure where she was going with this.

"I'm not really sure why my marital status would make a difference in what sort of mayor I'll be."

Sure, back home there had been an emphasis on arranged marriages for future Kings. But that was more of a focus on continuing the royal line. Here... well, mayors were chosen, not born.

"Just most politicians are married or engaged. They don't have girlfriends who may or may not be crazy. They also don't have girlfriends who run a private investigation agency for someone who's not even around and who investigate things like ghosts, demons, and the like. Some of the politicians from my world might know demons, but they'd never admit to it. Some might even be demons, but even here it's not normal for knowing or being a demon." Yes, Fred had just whispered all that without stopping for a breath.

"And I really don't like being...I donno. I don't think anyone thinks I'm really your girlfriend. I'm not asking you to announce it, just...gotta wonder if I'm the best choice for you." She sighed. "Course, I wonder if I'm the best choice for anyone, but you need someone who's just right."

"You're not crazy," Jack said emphatically. "You're brilliant, and as a result you think outside the box more than some. But you're not crazy."

He reached up to run his thumb down the side of her face.

"And you're the one I want to be with, so you are the best choice for me. Last I checked, people do get to choose who they want to date here, correct?" There was a half-smile, though it was a little forced. He couldn't help but worry that she was trying to break up with him, and not just seeking reassurance.

Fred's head tilted slightly into the touch, and she blushed. Jack smiled softly and sadly as she looked up at him. Her hand lifted to claim his, and she stepped away, still holding his hand. She led him off the dance floor because she didn't want people watching them for whatever discussion they were really about to have.

She didn't answer him straight out. She couldn't. She had to think about it first. Her fingers tightened on his as she continued to lead him away, hoping that no one would notice that the mayor was going to disappear for a moment with some woman who may or may not be his girlfriend.

Jack allowed Fred to lead him off the dance floor. He leaned in to speak to his campaign manager as they headed toward a door.

"I'll be back soon," he promised.

The campaign manager didn't look happy, but gave him a terse nod. Jack kept walking with Fred until they were out in a little garden behind the building.

Once they were outside, he waited for Fred to speak, trying to ignore the sinking feeling in his gut as he did so.
