Prison Blues (Narrative)

Effie bit her lip as she stared up at the police station, taking a deep breath, trying to steady herself before she walked in, clearing her throat as she approached the desk sergeant. “My name is Effie Banner, I am wanted for escaping jail,” she said pleasantly, as if she were confessing to jaywalking. Her hands slowly raised, keeping away from her body. “I am also the one responsible for the Violetta murders.”

She yelped as an overzealous police officer tackled her, her head bouncing on the floor. “Jesus Christ! Calm down!”

“Get off her,” the sergeant said, pulling Effie to her feet, accepting her hands as she held them behind her back, carefully cuffing her before searching her quickly for a weapon. “Head downstairs and find the detectives in charge of her cases, rookie.” The older officer then lead her down towards processing, turning her over to a female officer on duty. “When you’re changed, follow the yellow line and I’ll met you there.”

Effie nodded, turning so she could be uncuffed once the door had shut behind them, rubbing her wrist even though the cuffs hadn’t really hurt.

“What size are you?” The female officer asked.

“Two,” Effie said, pulling her hair ties out and setting them on the counter. The female officer nodded, making a note of it before searching Effie’s hair and pockets for weapons or contraband, leading the girl into a small shower room. “Strip down and set your clothing on the counter.”

Effie nodded, closing her eyes as she stripped nude, passing her clothing to the officer to process. The officer examined Effie’s underwear before sliding them back, keeping the girl’s bra due to the underwire in it. “Here ya go, if you want, grab a shower. I have no idea when you’ll see a judge and you might not get a chance.”

Effie glanced at the showers before shaking her head, accepting the uniform from the officer, pulling on the t-shirt before wiggling into the overalls, buttoning them carefully. She slid on the sandals. “Thank you, though, for the offer.”

The officer nodded, moving back around from her little cubicle where she had been filling out paperwork, sliding it over to Effie. “Sign here please.”

Effie signed stating she accepted the listing of her belongings before following the officer out of the room and down the hall. She traced the yellow line on the ground to processing, greeting the sergent again.

Fingerprints and pictures were taken, the process moving smoothly as Effie co-operated. The ease made the sergent relax slightly, even joking with the girl as he printed off her records. “Alright, it’s late tonight, but you should see a judge tomorrow. He’ll decide bail or Blackgate.”

“You really think they might send me there?” Effie asked, her eyes filling with fear. She knew that place...she knew the horrors of it. She would do anything to not go there.

“No idea, kid. You confessed to some serious crimes. Maybe you’ll get lucky...hard to believe someone like you would do something that horrible, but I’ve seen a lot of things in this job.

She nodded, taking a breath, trying to steady her emotions. “Well, we’ll see what happens, right?” She said, giving him a weak smile.

“That we will. Let’s get you settled in,” He turned, grabbing her pillow and blanket, offering them to her. “You’re in luck tonight, you get your own cell.” He lead her down to an empty cell, opening it for her and nodding as she entered. “Good night.”

“Good night, sir.”
