In Case You Didn't Know: Colleen and Misty are Awesome
It being Martial Arts Week, and all, it seems like an excellent time to finally post a story rather dear to my heart called "Daughters of the Dragon*" first published in Marvel's DEADLY HANDS OF KUNG FU magazine back in 1976.

If you're not familiar with DEADLY HANDS OF KUNG FU, I'll let Wiki explain it, because the editor's use of scare quotes is hilarious:

This magazine was published in the early 1970s amidst the "Kung Fu" or "Chopsocky" movie craze. Bruce Lee movies were scoring huge box-office grosses, and the Kung-Fu television series was being watched by millions. Billy Jack the half-Indian, Green Beret martial arts hero was making his appearance, and people were "shaking their booty" to Carl Douglas's hit "Kung Fu Fighting". Kung-Fu was on many people's lips and the Deadly Hands of Kung Fu was there to capitalize on it. [...] Each issue had various comic stories from the above mentioned characters, both single issues stories and multi-issue arcs. Most of the issues had some kind of martial arts movie review from a recently released film. Other issues had interviews with authentic Martial arts instructors, while others had interviews with movie or television celebrities related to martial arts.

Add Women By Claremont to the mix, and sounds like fun, don't it?

Our story begins in Hong Kong, with two women walking into a seedy bar.

Why are Colleen and Misty looking for this Vachon? Why, for honor of course.

It's funny, but for the detectives par excellence they're supposed to be, Colleen and Misty spend pretty much this entire story blundering around being fairly incompetent. I mean, yes, back in the 70s comic book characters were still allowed to screw up sometimes - even Batman got regularly captured - but these two sort of take it to extremes here.

Though they never screw up a moment when fighting.

Man, this art is ridiculous.

Did I not promise naked ladies? This story got reprinted in the recent Deadly Hands Special, complete with an underwear edit. Which I object to on principle, but in practice, it doesn't bother me here, since the hottest thing on this page is actually Colleen in that comfy-sexy shirt.

Anyway, Colleen tracks Chung to his ship in the bay (which is so packed with junks, sampans and other small boats that they can basically hop their way from one shore to the other without getting wet), and, once again, get in over their head and have to flee.

She does blast the ammo. It goes up bigger than expected, and both women get knocked into the water, unconcsious, by the force of the explosion, whence they're recovered by Vachon's men.

Vachon is not very nice to them.

So, they're there for a few days, which at the dose they're being given, is more than enough time to have them begging for the next fix (which sounds pretty expensive, frankly - Vachon's throwing good money after bad here if you ask me). Doc Hartmann there decides they're far enough along to indulge his depravity, and strips Colleen, telling her she'll get her smack when he gets her sex.

Misty decides that's about enough of that, breaks her chains, and snaps Hartmann's neck.

On the way out Misty runs into Chung, Vachon's 2IC (the guy with the electric bolo from earlier).

The ish is pretty much solid fight from here on out and I gotta crop something, so as fun as Misty vs Vachon is, we're going to jump ahead a bit to where Colleen joins the party, just in time to save Misty's life.

Nice of them to give us these little lessons in the vagaries of Asian weaponry as we go along, isn't it?

Sniping is a martial art, right?

I can add nothing to that, except to say that I truly love Chris Claremont.

* The first one, that is. Not to be confused with the second one printed later in BIZARRE ADVENTURES and subtitled "Safe Streets." Or the mini that preceded v2 HfH. The title seems to pop up a lot where these two are concerned.

You know what's awesome?

B&W comics from the 1970s. Probably the pinnacle of the form.

Women kicking ass, Large Ham villians, a plot out of Kung Fu Theater 101 and shamelessly gratuitous nudity.

If they showed up on DVD, I'd buy it!

Ouch, how did the second one miss it?

*shot*

Fabulous post, Misty and Colleen are indeed awesome and I love their relationship. And it's a small, random detail, but I'm inexplicably fond of the way they refer to each other and themsleves as "Ms." whereas the cop and Vachon both use "Miss".

The really nice thing about the seventies, is that (because they lay around fucking everyone all day? because porn then wasn't full of cosmetic enhancements? because.. hippies?) they really knew what bodies looked like, and that people could be sexual without being oversexed and 24/7 submissive-seductive. So the exploitation comics are waaay less offensive than they could be because they seem like real people making real choices instead of bonepuppets.

I gotta say, I think the modern underwear edit is kind of silly. It's not really rude nudity, is it?

Wait, so comics were less censored in the 70s? Or what? Because the idea of a 616 title having, gasp, female nipples on panel these days is, like, laughable. What happened?

Misty saved your life--it seemed only natural you should become friends.

Yes, isn't that the classic story? A dashing hero saves a beautiful woman and they become good friends?

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to enter 'Misty/Colleen: bionic arm' into the Marvel Kink Meme.

Thanks for posting, this was great.

And this line, “Too bad you didn't know that for the last three days you've been shooting your precious smack into my bionic arm.” goes on my list of all-time favorites.

Anyone else hear Pam Grier's voice every time Misty speaks?

If she were three decades younger I'd want her and Quentin Tarantino to make this into a movie.

I have to get this.

Ah, the 70's. Awesome afros, silly plots, Kung-fu... This was totally awesome.

Also, the nudity. There was a lot more of it then, it seems, and a lot less of it was plasticky.

Incidentally, I heard someone say that at one point Colleen dated Scott Summers, is that true?

I hurt myself laughing a little at the circle of RIP WAK KAPOW RIP BAM SLAP sound effects. Damned if that wasn't a creative use of space.

Though wtf at them losing clothes as they run. Even if a TV adaptation of it would be hysterically delicious. :3

So much love here. The whole thing is sweet as hell, and the details are amazing. The great sound effects, and I don't just mean the ring of fight sounds, but all of them, the physical interaction between the girls, the fact that the theatre is playing Planet of the Apes, right down to the little Eisner-esque "Later" when they leave the police station. We need more comics like this. Lots of them.

To counter my comment on Domino's weapon: Now _those_ are actual guns. I havn't seen a snail drum like that in years, they're horribly out of fashion... but that's a snail drum all right. Everything there is accurate. Even the fighting styles make reasonable amounts of sense, even if they're, ah, a bit exaggerated for comics.

It's like anatomy. Why did everyone stop drawing human anatomy in the 90s? Cars, guns, people, it's all the same.

bung•start•er
Pronunciation: (bung'stär"tur), [key]
—n.
a mallet for loosening or removing the bung of a cask.

If Marvel can do a direct to video Man-Thing movie, they can do a "Daughters of the Dragon" movie.

Nia Long has played tough characters like Misty. Reiko Aylesworth might make a good Colleen, as she's one of the few half-Japanese actresses I can think of.

These come from issues 32 and 33 of Deadly Hands, with 33 being the final issue of the mag. I had the idea of doing a post about how badass Misty is for being able to blow up a boat with a pistol, but this has made the idea redundant. Instead I'll be annoying and post a link to a blog comment I did on Colleen's outfit a while back. http://timgueguen.blogspot.com/2008/02/clothes-and-heroine.html

Ok, this is pretty awesome all around. That full page spread, holy cow. But I can't help but notice that on page 5, Misty's right bra strap is detached, and then her left strap is flying all over the place in the next panel. That's not a complaint, I just like to think she has the kung-fu power to keep it on regardless.
