Allred's style here reminds me so much of Windsor "Little Nemo in Slumberland" McCay.

Want more please. Kthnx!

this is far and away my favorite strip in Wednesday comics. This art is just so amazing. Love the scene with the little girl in the owl glasses.

Is it me or is hawkman a little creepy when he smiles...

The art is the very best I've seen from Baker in years. Which is shocking that I'm seeing it on Hawkman.

You know what else? Keep him the hell away from the rest of the DCU and Hawkman is a perfectly good character. Sometimes I think the real way to save DC is a kind of Vertigo strategy: no more crossovers. To dispense with the idea of the DCU altogether. (That would be impossible with Marvel, as it's all been interwoven on an atomic level almost from the start)

A Gaiman/Allred collaboration? Delicious.

Am I the only one who though the Element Girl mention was morbidly funny since Gaiman had her commit suicide in the mainstream DCU?

Thats what I thought, I like that the cute kids didn't mention what happened to her. On the other hand, I've always read it as more a mercy kidding than suicide, or at least as not a negative thing.

Each page is a full story, if anything we should limit ourselves to half a page or something.

Nope. Each page is 1/12th of a story. Which is why the mods have declared we're not allowed to scan more than four of any one character.

Have you seen those things? I'd rather scan a trade than one of those suckers. If you know someone else is going to do it for you within a couple of days, and better and more professionally than you... there's an effort threshold, and WC is clearly over it.

Hey, no argument from me, I'm just as guilty of waiting for the .cbr as anyone else! Last week I felt weird about it, but ultimately vindicated when everyone else started posting from it as soon as the .cbr was up.
As long as you still get your paper copy cos oh man are you missing out if you don't!

You know, they don't need Hawkman to beat those terrorists; they could just take that girls absurdly large and thick coke bottle glasses and use it to catch the sun and light those guys on fire.

Seriously, in that first scan of her looking out the window she looks like some sort of bug creature.

Let's all take a moment to remember Baker's comments about this series:

"By the way, just for the fans, I'm making this story the bloodiest and most depressing story ever! Full of realism! HAWKMAN'S WORLD WILL BE CHANGED FOREVER! I've revealed too much. I can say no more."

"For some reason, a lot of message board posters think I'm joking about the story being depressing. I'm not sure why. The most successful book I've done recently has been NAT TURNER, which was certainly a bloody, realistic, and depressing story! By contrast, my work on PLASTIC MAN was hated by fans, and the last six issues were never reprinted. Dan Didio told fans and editors that nobody liked my art style, and I wasn't offered work from DC for years after. The great comedian Sergio Aragones is writing serious cowboy stories for another artist at DC. DARK KNIGHT was the biggest movie ever, and Warner's has announced they are going to make more superhero movies that are dark and depressing. Obviously, this is what people want. I will not do any more comedy in DC or Marvel comics. I have four children to feed. I have enough awards.

Writer Bob Morales was recently speaking to Marvel editor Axel Alonso about doing a sequel to our Captain America book, TRUTH. Axel said, "We want you to write it Bob, but the folks here at Marvel really hated Kyle's art on that book." Bob told Axel that I had changed my style, and sent him links to this post. Axel saw the art and said, "That's much better, he can do it."

So I'm back folks. I've got my mind right, boss."

Dark Knight wasn't totally depressing, though. The boat scene was all about hope and (most) people's inner goodness.

"Hawkman regrets the death of so many birds... but this is war, they are his army"

No, they are sodding well not, you malevolent, bird-murdering bastard Hawkman!

They are non-sentient animals with no vested interest in what you are forcing them to do. If anything they are, metaphorically, civilian non-combatants you have forcibly drafted into your feathery Suicide Squad!

Now if we were to find out that these are grateful birds who are doing it in return for your protecting their endangered habitat, then it's not quite so bad, but we haven't seen any indication of that.

Gaiman, you are brilliant. Just the concept of a DCU where Metamorpho is the most popular superhero makes my cool-sensing nerves twitch in a pleasurable way. I would want to read those comics - and lookie here, I am!

Is the volcano warmed arctic land something that has been around in DC for a while? Because Marvel has had the Savage Land for decades.

Well, the DCU has had Skartaris for decades, the "world inside the world" approach, but I can't think of any volcanoes being mentioned specifically.

As for the Savage Land... it's been modified a few times, it's no longer just volcanoes, I believe it's current story is that it's maintained by Celestial technology.
