MORE ATTENTION TO INTERSECTIONALITY, PLZTHNX

"If" Black Women Were White Women"

Written, apparently, in the style of 'What if Men Could Menstruate' by Gloria Steinem. To quote [info] fiction_theory: There is some discussion of sexual assault in the essay - but I feel it is worth it.

NaNoWriMo - Day 21

GOD FINALLY. This was suppose to happen on the 15th! But instead, I sit on 40k for six or seven days idek and THEN write 10,000 words in two days and I, I don't know. I just don't know.

This story is so not over but jeez. At least I officially won NaNo, anyway. Second time EVAR, yes!

computers, laws thereof

Phoenix's Universal Laws of Computing:

1) Your computer is stupid, but completely obedient. It will do exactly what you tell it to do, whether or not that's what you actually want or, indeed, what you thought you were doing.

2) Your computer is out to get you. It hates your guts and wants you dead. You cannot let down your guard even for a moment. Save early, save often, and back up everything regularly.

3) Your computer can tell if you're afraid. It will do everything in its power to keep you that way. You have to show it who's boss, and that had better be you.

I'm watching an Emily Browning image community that keeps tagging entries with heaps of tags about Twilight and how she's Bella Swan, Edward is the only one for her, etc, etc.

I...actually find it really obnoxious. I'm not sure if this is obnoxious of me, in turn? I ended up commenting today. They basically replied with 'shut up, we're going to make up whatever tags we want.'

It's funny how feeling snooty can salve your worries about your own obnoxiousness. **shifty eyed**

Gimp: Paint Studio

I had mentioned this one before, but here it is again. Paint Studio is a collection of brushes, presets and other useful bits for the Gimp. They are now being hosted on Google Code, so it's a wee bit easier to keep track of what's current.

Two decks ... still

It's been over two weeks now since our new deck was put in. Too bad we still have the OLD deck sitting in the middle of our yard:

Our (salvage) yard

Taken through the screen of my bedroom window

I'm tired of looking at it. -_-;

Vacation!

It's finally vacation and now that I've already started a list of things I need to do, I'm not even sure there'll be enough time in a week to do them all. *weak laugh* I'll do my best, though!

Our new fridge arrived yesterday while I was working (I was impressed by how quietly they managed to take out the old one and deliver the new one so that it didn't disturb my calls.) It's HUGE compared to our old one, which is funny, because when we saw it in the showroom we could have sworn it was smaller. But when we put all our food into it (which used to be stuffed to the gills) there's now plenty of leftover room. @_@

Michiru surprised me by buying me fleece sheets, and they're pink! :D Hers are light blue, to match her room. They're so soft and warm and snuggly. ^_^

Our new healthier way of eating has really made a difference with that pesky menopause-inspired weight gain that sprang upon me suddenly. I've managed to get it back down to 115 lbs and it seems fairly steady right now, yay!

While looking around websites at work yesterday I came across this story -- if you've ever been in a position where you worked customer service and didn't want to just smile and take it from nasty customers, this is a great tale. It's a few pages long, but a satisfying read.

Still uploading over at my AO3. I'm filling up the Prince of Tennis and Fruits Basket categories rapidly. XD

This week we're hoping to get to see '2012' and 'New Moon' (I hate the two Twilight stars, but there are werewolves and vampires, so ... yeah.)

Red Dragon...this explains much

Guess what surprised me in the middle of the night?

This explains why the sinus headache was so damnable (it's gone now, Thank Gods...I don't want to throw up anymore). Maybe the Dragon will behave until I get home from work.

For only getting 4 hours of sleep, I'm oddly awake.

It's creepy foggy out. 0__0

I swear, if I don't get a tan this summer, sitting in the sun for a while every day with my rabbit, I never will.

When I think objectively, I also find it strange that I consider lying on the lawn reading while my rabbit flops in his cage to be spending quality time with him. But.. you know... I scratch him a bit and we look at each other and he tooth-purrs.

Also: went to meeting with the psych unit. Diagnosed with social phobia. Was told I'd probably feel better if I got volunteer work or something. THINGS I ALREADY KNEW FOR $500.

Television Without Pity--But Racism is Dandy!

Okay, I should have known better. But I was enjoying the SGU thread on TWoP, with all of the lovely snark. And I appreciated the fact that most of the posters seemed to get why having sex in someone else's body was skeevy, and why it's problematic that the black guy in SGU is yet another Angry Black Man.

Seriously--I should have known better. )

[info]raisedbymoogles

No, really, they're tweets. :D?

- I just typoed 'Phantom of the Opera' as 'Phantom of the Opry.' Interesting AU, that.

- Am marathoning Ouran Host Club - just found out that Haruhi wants to be a lawyer. Guess what I'm crossing it over with now. Go ahead, guess.

- At work I spent half an hour blow-drying a bobcat. The bobcat was unappreciative.

Approaching burn out

...I hate the shifting weather. My sinuses are not happy and I'm feeling nauseous. I thought maybe I could combat it with tea, but my grandparents have nasty tea and I nearly threw it up after a sip.

I'm exhausted. Today at work I was doing 'roaming reference' meaning I was walking everywhere, including up and down stairs. *falls over*

Also, my throat is really dry and I'm really hoping I'm not catching my boss' 'sick' or that I didn't catch something from the patrons. Considering I'm now in contact with hundreds, if not thousands of people on a daily basis it seems that all the hand sanitizer I use is a futile effort at best.

Ugh...I have to work at 8am on Saturday. Here's to hoping I don't feel like death.

On BDSM, Part I

So, [info]the_minx_17 and I have been talking for the last couple days about making a specific post. Minx put hers up already – you can find it here - and now I'm putting up mine.

Hello, my name is Irana, and I am a Top. This means that within the BDSM community/The Scene/Lifestyle, I am what many refer to as a Dominant.

This post will hopefully not only explain why I read very little BDSM, D/s, lifestyle themed fics, but also will allow those of you reading who are not a part of the community some knowledge. Because really, some of the crap out there being called kink is shit. Please, for the love of life, seriously, go fuck up someone else's kink, okay? Leave mine alone. Some of those fics have no actually basis in reality, they do not acknowledge RACK/SSC at all and it drives me batshit insane. What are those two things you ask? Let me explain. )

I have a lot more to say, so I'm going to stop here for a bit. Got questions? Ask. Really. Next topics will be limits, total power exchange and negotiation.

thankful for unemployment?

I went to the supermarket yesterday.  There were fairly long lines with the pre-Thanksgiving crowd and the cashiers were hauling whole turkeys over the scanners.

I was very grateful not to be working in a supermarket anymore.

In fact, the market was always open on Thanksgiving and I started working there in September of 2006 so this is going to be the first Thanksgiving since 2005 where I won’t have to go to work.

IT'S LIKE A FREAKING TRAIN WRECK. I can't stop opening these posts about Glee. How can people defend this show? Oh wait--ignorance, all the sundry ugly -isms, privilege...

[info - personal] haddayr:
For the record:

1. When an old folks home has a tag sale, they do NOT have a dozen state-of-the-art rigid lightweight wheelchairs in funky colors to get rid of for nothing. The hardware they had in there, even massively used, would have paid for dozens upon dozens upon quadrillions of bus rides. Old people get piece-of-shit rundown folding chairs that are nearly impossible to push on your own.
2. When your sister has Downs? You don't hold her hand as you read her stories in precious, pwecious tears at her pathetic wretched handicapableness. You've known she had Downs your whole life. You're over feeling sorry for her, assuming you ever did, since you're her LITTLE SISTER.
3. When you are in a wheelchair and you find out that your love interest has been FAKING HER STUTTER? You are not angry because she's now "normal" and you are "stuck in this chair for the rest of your life." You are angry because she's been playing at what you actually experience. You are angry because half of the world treats you already as if you're faking it, and she really WAS faking it.
4. Noble and adorable cripples do not clasp their hands and give an "aw, shucks" look when their AB comrades in wheelchairs say: "This is for YOU," and point at them cheesily.
5. Schools that are not fully wheelchair accessible are BREAKING THE LAW. You do not have to give up your bus to pay for handicapped ramps. People do not have to write their own checks. Ramps are not provided out of the goodness of people's hearts. IT. IS. THE. MOTHERFUCKING. LAW.
6. And no one is worried about getting sued if they don't hire disabled people. Disablism in hiring practices is rampant and accepted. Threatening someone with the ACLU is a way to get yourself laughed out of the place, not immediately hired in a horrible economic climate.

This show actually had someone pretend to be disabled to get a job. The sheer breathtaking offensiveness of it is a marvel.

Also? For any idiot who wants to whine 'it's just a High School Musical soap opera TV show, you're taking it too seriously' I'd like to quote [info] balgar

It's quite odd to assume that certain cultural products are beneath analysis. Operas, symphonies, novels in the "literature" section, and subtitled movies more than two hours long do not convey more information or perspective than thirty second commercials, top 40 singles, network television shows, or comic books. I'd say that mass-marketed, "low culture" works are less idiosyncratic in their perspective and are therefore more useful in terms of understanding the society of which they are a product.

So how about all the morons who thought writing about the ~poor hopeless needy~ disabled person without a life was a good idea watch this gorgeous piece of work?

Fic Repost ~ Fireworks ~ Day 4 ~ 30 Days of Neville

So, was looking about my journal and realized huh... didn't post this last years after 30 Days of Nev was over. So... posting now.

Title: Fireworks
Author: Irana [info]irana
Rating: Adult
Pairing(s): Draco/Neville
Summary: When Draco and Neville see each other again for the first time in years it's at a place Draco never expected with results he never dreamed of.

Warning(s): UST, alternating POV, hair pulling, biting, semi-public sex, oral sex
Word Count: 4825
Author's Notes: I had a lot of fun writing this. Real places and locations have been taken and twisted to suit my purposes for this fic. There is very little magic in this, because both of them are working within a Muggle/Magic program, and so they keep the use of magic to a minimum.
