A month earlier, Caroline couldn't talk about the book or the series of events that led to it ending up in a rich man's collection to collect dust without tearing up. She'd told Eliot that it was a precious family heirloom and she'd been responsible for keeping it safe. The way she hesitated told him there was more to the story but she'd placed the money on the table and asked him to help. Ten thousand to retrieve a forcefully taken family heirloom.
Nights earlier, he'd finished the job. One break in, three security guards, and out. Then the damn thing sat on his coffee table and made him uneasy. There was something about the old leather bound book that was off. If it had been a few months earlier, he would have dismissed the notion in annoyance. Now, given that vampires and demons roamed freely, he was happy to hand it over to her, the money tucked in the front cover. She never noticed it as she hugged him profusely and then left.
The plan was to order lunch and then head home to get a few hours of sleep. After giving his order to the kid running the register, he turned to lean against the counter to wait. It didn't take him long to spot the attractive brunette who had stepped into line behind him. A small smile followed. "Afternoon."
