A/N: Written for delayedpoet, set in AU: Endurance sometime after Mandy and Nathan eloped. Let me know if you want it posted in the comm.
Ferrol and Nathan sat in the easy silence of brothers in the comfort of Nathan’s study in his and Mandy’s house. A fire crackled in the fireplace, casting a warm glow across the room. Both men casually held glasses of firewhiskey, sipping slowly from their respective leather chairs.
“I have to say, Nathan,” Ferrol said quietly, retrospectively, “this place is very nice. I never would have thought to find you somewhere like this someday, even a couple of years ago.”
It was honesty given as only a close friend could give it, straight forward but kind. Though Nathan had a quick temper much of the time, from Ferrol he could take it without getting upset.
“I didn’t think I would end up here either,” the younger brother admitted with a casual shrug. “Mandy changed a lot of things for me.”
Ferrol nodded and sipped at his drink. He’d watched his brother change from someone who was ultimately selfish, indulging in all the basest of his hungers and relished in hurting others, to a man perhaps a little obsessed with one woman but catering to her every want and need, protecting her (perhaps too forcefully) from anyone who wanted to harm her. He wouldn’t have thought it possible.
“I’m glad I was part of your wedding,” Ferrol said, planning a lead in to something he had noticed.
Nathan nodded. “No one else I would have for my best man,” he told his older brother honestly. The two had always been close, except for that small span of time near the end and directly after the war.
“I was wondering…” Ferrol’s tone was casual as he swirled the liquid in his glass around. “When I talked to you after the wedding, it seemed like Mandy knew more than I thought she might about things.” Nathan frowned, shifting uncomfortably now, but Ferrol went on, looking at him from over his glass. “What all does she know, Nathan?” he asked, genuinely curious. Not only did he not want to overstep his bounds at some point, but he really wanted to know just how honest Nathan had managed to be.
Nathan’s green eyes met Ferrol’s deep brown, and for once they were clear and honest, Ferrol noted. “Everything, Ferrol. She knows everything.”
The answer was extremely surprising, but for some reason it pleased Ferrol very much, even if he might still worry about Mandy on occasion. “Really? Interesting,” he murmured and let the comfortable silence fall again.
Neither of them noticed that the door of the study was partly open, or the shadowed figure of a woman—the very one they were talking about—just outside of it.
