[Action | Open]
[She's a little absent-minded this morning - the events of the night before are still whirling through her thoughts, causing little thrills of excitement and nervousness which seem to wipe her mind clean the moment they hit. She manages to get up on time and get ready for her shift well enough, but after putting together her lunch, she leaves the little box on the counter and wanders out the door.

Once she arrives, she takes a moment to make a cup of tea before she begins what she hopes will be a somewhat interesting shift; not that she wants anyone to fight or get hurt, but she needs something to draw her out of her thoughts. She also looks quite different from most days: she's unusually dressed up for a simple shift, and very oddly for her, her hair is loose around her shoulders and brushed to a shine. She's even got a touch of gloss on her lips, although that's as far as she dared go with makeup.

Anyone who comes into HQ will find her dipping a teabag in and out of a mug, staring off into the distance.]

[ A giggle. ] Maybe this place is doing some good, if it reformed someone like him~

I think it's more that... we figured each other out. There were lots of us back home, so we could pick the people we liked at first and avoid everyone else. But here, it's just us... so we had no choice but to look deeper.

[Thoughtfully.] I do think this place has made me better, though.

[ Jeanne smiles softly. This girl talks with more maturity than she expected. ]</small> That's good. I'm glad!

[ As to the introspection... ] You think so?

[She's an odd mix of unusually mature and utterly naive, this one.]

Well, yeah... I think it's because I didn't really - well, to be honest, I didn't have any friends back home. It was just me and my mom. So I didn't think about other people, I didn't bother considering their viewpoint. I just hated them.

But here I haven't even got my mom, so I've had to meet more people and make connections, and... you can't really think in black and white when you deal with people, can you? They teach you so many other sides to things. It opens up your mind a bit.

Does that make sense?

[ She nods. ] I think so. You'd be surprised how many people would probably have the same viewpoint, even if they didn't grow up in your situation.

[ Jeanne rises, stretching her arms above her head, pacing a circle around the desk just so she isn't idle. It helps her think. ] The military back home had a problem just like that. I wish they had the sense to come to your conclusion before things went too far...

Um... [She watches Jeanne pace, wondering what to say to that.] I think maybe it takes something pretty big to make you change how you feel about everything. Even if you get the feeling that you're wrong... change is hard, y'know?

[Nodding slightly to herself. That makes sense.]

[ She shakes her head. ] I don't think a lot of them ever thought they were wrong, that's the trouble. "Might is right," or something like that. [ Jeanne stops and shrugs. ] I'm past all that. Literally, in time... I'm just glad Acumen waited to pick me up until after the hard part was over.

[Nakama's expression darkens a little at that.] Might is right... I fought with someone like that. He thought because he was in a giant robot, that gave him the right to choose who lived and who died. He didn't care about evacuating, about minimizing damage... he really liked killing random people.

[Softer.] Until he accidentally killed his dad. Then he just froze up.

[Then she shakes her head, laughing nervously.] Sorry. That wasn't a very nice thing to share. I just... got lost in the memory.

It's... okay. [ Right out of left field, but still. ] I just didn't expect that, in a lot of ways. [ She moves close, leaning forward with her hands on her knees. ] It sounds like you had a harder time at home than I thought...

Some of the later fights were worse than the ones I had to see. Ushiro told me about some of them... I think I was lucky to be one of the earlier pilots.

[She can see that Jeanne's a little shocked, so she doesn't go into how hard it really was. She doesn't need to hear about kids being killed by the very weapon that saved their world.]

The memories are still so clear, that's the problem. I don't feel like I've been here over two weeks. Some of it feels just like yesterday.

Mm, sounds like it...

Time doesn't play by the rules here, I don't think. It's almost like traveling through fold-space, with relativity, time dilation, and all that. [ Complicated stuff she doesn't really want to get into, so she just waves it away. ]

[She just kind of stares for a minute. She's got no idea what Jeanne just said, but it all sounds really, really smart.]

Did they know about stuff like that in your world?

[ A quick nod. ] That's right! Everyone who travels on a fold-capable ship needs to be aware of the basics, since it's all very complicated. There's no other way to travel between worlds, since space travel takes so long using just standard propulsion.

Whoa. [She shakes her head, laughing to herself.] That all sounds like something from a movie to me. We don't have anything like that.

I guess it probably made some of the stuff here easier to accept, though, huh? The stuff about different timelines and all that.

Maybe? [ Jeanne puts a finger to her chin. ] It made the "different worlds" part easier, that's for sure. [ Her expression dulls a bit. ] --I still get kind of nervous hearing about other versions of Earth, though, since it's uninhabitable where I'm from..

Yeah. I didn't find out that there were other worlds where I was from - [There's a flicker of something dark across her face, but she forces it away.] - until I got here, so I wasn't really ready for that. But when I found out about how it worked back home...

... I think I can understand that nervousness. There's things from home you just don't want to think about.

[ Another nod. ] That probably goes for a lot of people...

[ Absently, her hand falls on her black earpiece, and it's then that she takes note of the watch on her wrist. ] --oh, shoot. I should get going. I promised Wolfram I'd meet up with him later, and I haven't even freshened up yet!

Thanks, Nakama. [ She gives her a reassuring pat on the shoulder. ] And I hope things go well with your and Ushiro. [ Jeanne waves over her shoulder as she turns to head out. ] See you later!
