Hi all! I'm JJ and new to the game. I'm bringing in this guy, Jonathon Black as an OC from the TV show The Magicians. He attended Brakebills about the same time as the main cast. Though he doesn't know any of them, he has heard of some of them and taken a couple "basic" magic classes with them.

He's from Maine, illusion magic is his discipline aka what he's really good at. He's 27, plays the guitar and piano and sings. He moved to New York to pursue music when he graduated high school before ending up at Brakebills University for Magical Pedagogy. More info about him can be found in his app in the journal. He's looking for friends, connections and all the things. I'm down for plotting, logs and more. I'm so looking forward to writing with you all!

I just want to say that October was a wonderful month for us! We had a lot of activity, we got a lot of new players, and I enjoyed it immensely. I want to give my love to each and every one of you for making it such a wonderful month of RP.

I'd love to hear your ideas of where you'd like to have the plot go this month! I have a general direction in mind, but I'd love to hear what you guys would like to do with it too. This is not my game, but our game, and I want everyone to continue having fun with it.

Hello, everybody!

My name is Carrah, and I'm new around these parts! I'm bringing you one Éponine Thénardier from Les Mis. She's a street-smart gamine, coming in from moments before her death. For an ease of play, I'm going to have her come in with some English, though she still struggles with the language. She's just barely 18, a bit wary of her surroundings, but she's feisty and adaptable and most of all, a survivor. She may be a bit shy at first, but once she gets more comfortable, she'll be fine. But I know she'd love friends or somebody to help show her around town, help her with English/technology, anything!

As for me, I'm 26 years old, a manager at a law firm specializing in foreclosures, street cast at the local renaissance faire, and baritone in a local barbershop chorus. I almost always have my phone on me, so you can find me on aim and gmail-- I may be slow, but I'll get back to you as soon as I can! Hey, I'm really sluggish at posting tonight, guys. XD I took my dad to the hospital in the middle of the night (he's fine, it's just a kidney stone), and my sleeping is all messed up now and I'm totally groggy.

I seem to have caught a cold from the sudden cold snap and as a few of you who know me, illnesses hit me hard and are a bitch to my swiss cheese immune system. I PROMISE that no matter what you will get the tags I owe tomorrow.

Dear Madison Valley People:

I now bring you one Oliver Queen aka Green Arrow from Smallville. Unlike my other character here (Anna), he's probably going to be pretty friendly with everyone. He's not reserved the way she is. In addition to being a vigilante superhero (although he's completely human, unlike all of his super-powered hero friends at home), Oliver is a billionaire. His parents founded a company called Queen Industries before he was born, which he inherited when they died when he was nine. He obviously couldn't run said company until he was much older.

When he graduated from Excelsior (a private boys school), he set sail on a trip that was to be his last big hurrah before taking over at QI. Unfortunately for Oliver, his shipmates were killed by pirates and he was left for dead sans boat. He washed up on a deserted island where he was stranded for two years. During that time he made the decision that if he ever got to return home, he'd make changes and make his parents proud. For survival purposes, he fell back on a skill set that he learned from his father: archery. He made himself a bow and arrows so he wouldn't starve.

After his eventual rescue, Oliver made good on his vow: he became Green Arrow and took to the streets of Star City nightly, rescuing people who were in trouble from criminals and helping put said criminals behind bars. Of course, no one knows he's billionaire Oliver Queen, either, except for a precious few: Lois Lane, Chloe Sullivan, Clark Kent, Bart Allen, Arthur Curry, Dinah Lance and Victor Stone. The latter four are super-powered people he helped in various ways and convinced them to form a team to help "save the world" from people like Lex Luthor. They are occasionally aided by techno wiz, Chloe Sullivan, who does the "sidekick sidejob" for Oliver when he needs her help.

I've pulled him from post his ONE appearance in Smallville's seventh season, "Siren," for those familiar with the show. So he's just met Dinah, and been shot down by Lois, who just learned of his secret life as a hero.

He's open for plots and interactions! Oh and if your pups are familiar with comics or Smallville, feel free to canon puncture him. It'll blow his mind.

Hey guys, this is a rule change I've been considering for a long while, and have finally decided to implement.

From this point on, when you want to hold and/or apply for new characters, there's a minimum activity requirement. Namely, all of your current characters have to have reached 25 points of activity before you're allowed to place a hold or apply for another character. I'm not doing this to punish anyone, but just because it's important to play the characters we have before applying for more. This does not apply to any characters currently apped or currently on hold.

Also, after this month there will be no 'probation' for characters who don't make activity. This month, you're fine - but starting in November, you'll have to make activity or your characters will be cut at the end of the month.

If you're finding it difficult to make activity, please contact me. I am very understanding if you're having a hard time, or if stuff is going on in your life, but I don't know what's going on unless you let me know. You may have a really good excuse for not posting, but if you don't drop me an e-mail then I can't tell the difference between a good excuse and a simple loss of interest. Communication is key!

EDIT: Also, to make things easier for everyone, starting November 1, open logs are going to be worth 40 points. This means all you have to do to make activity is to reply and/or post to ONE open log and ONE open network. That's it! Two posts in a month, and you're good with activity.

Okay, guys! Not exactly sure how to go about this, so I'd like to hear your opinions.

There's going to be a council meeting this week. Would you guys like to play that out in a thread, or would you rather just have an OOC post and decide on what happened? Either way is fine for me, and a thread would be cool (if it's manageable?) but whichever you guys want is fine. :)

So, just let me know your feelings on how that should be done in the comments. :)

Hey guys, just a few things.

First, a reminder that the activity check will be on November 1. I will be doing it, you won't have to do anything (unless you want to double check my figures). I'm just trying it this way this month to see how it works, so we don't have a long drawn out week of activity checks. The requirements are as follows:

• You must have one thread. This can be an open thread, a closed thread, or a narrative thread. It can be one you posted, or one that you have replied to. There is no minimum number of tags, although of course it would be better if it were more than one a piece. Please don't take advantage of this, try to do something with your threads. But it's not going to make a difference on activity. If the thread is unanswered, it still counts for the person who posted it, same as a narrative would.
  
• You must have at least one interaction with someone outside of your character's fandom. It is a panfandom game, after all. ;)
  
• The total number of points you have must add up to at least 50. Remember:
  
  • 5 pts = Closed network/comm
    
  • 10 pts = Open network/comm
    
  • 25 pts = Narrative or closed thread
    
  • 35 pts = Open thread

As stated in the rules, if you don't meet the activity requirements, you will be put on a sort of "probation" which you can get out of by doing 1.5x (75points) the activity the next month. If you don't make that, your character will be removed from the game.

If you have any questions on activity requirements, please contact me. If for some reason you can't make the activity requirements, please contact me. I am reasonable and understanding, but if you don't tell me, I don't know anything's going on. So far, I only have one person (Adelai, for a family emergency), who has been exempted from the month's activity check. Everyone else will be expected to make 50 points with the above requirements.

Another thing - In the rules it states that holds for over ten characters will have to be approved by the mod. I've decided, to make it clear to everyone, to elaborate on how exactly that will be done. In order to have a hold approved for any characters over 10, you must have met monthly activity for all of your current characters. This will not apply to those who already have over 10 characters, but it will apply to any new ones. This is just to make sure that characters get played, because that's what we're all here for, isn't it? :)

Went back to work today so hope to get my fun back!

Hi, everyone! I'm Lena, I'm brand shiny new and I come bearing Rose Hathaway from Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy series (as well as the sister/sequel series, but Rose hasn't experience that, yet). Rose is best friends with Lissa Dragomir, she a dhampir, which means she's half-human, half-vampire and she's pretty much a badass.

Well, usually. She's coming from a point where she's kind of recently been shot and she'll still be recovering from that for a bit. She'll also think she's dead, so that should be amusing. Unfortunately, I don't think anyone is from the proper point to explain things to her, sooo, yeah.

Rose is pretty friendly, albeit snarky and insanely protective of Lissa, so come at me with your people. I'd love some friends/sparring buddies for her, but anything else is welcome, too.

And, you know, if anyone wanted to pick up Dmitri, I think she'd be pretty thrilled to see him. I would also love to see Adrian, Sydney and MASON. Because her reaction to seeing Mason would be hilarious. For me, I mean.

If you have no idea what I'm talking about, you NEED to read the books ASAP. Because they are amazing. I have ePubs. Just saying.

I'm not ignoring tags, I'm just trying to get people into posts and then will tag as I do that. :D

The good news is that I will hopefully get to go back to work very soon and that will help me combat the bad depression spiral that I've been dealing with for the last sixteen days. This would also be why I haven't done anything but network posts lately because that was all I have had the brain for.

The bad news is that we have to wait for word to come down from my contracting company so I may not be able to go to work until Monday.

So.

After getting some very contradictory answers about things, it's been determined my dad's liver is basically not working and we're being told anywhere from a few weeks-three months if he doesn't gt a transplant. There's more hope of that happening now that my mother's convinced the doctors he's not an alcoholic but...

Yeah.

I'd been hoping for Belle to come back today, but I don't think my heart'll be there yet. We're going to see him Sunday, we'll see how things are around then.

Mylia wanted me to let everyone know she's not feeling well, so she'll tag when she can -- probably tomorrow.

Also, I wanted to apologize for not being around much. Health stuff sucks. I'll be around starting tomorrow, though!

So updateish on things. Dad is now conscious, off the ventilator, coherent (altho refusing to believe why he can't remember two days), able to eat jello and get out of bed to a nearby chair. So, I don't think I'll be gone as long as planned, tho work mess at least means I'll stil probably be out until middle of next week at least.

Hi, everyone!

We're going to do everything a little bit differently this month, so far as activity goes. Actually, I'm going to be doing everyone's activity this month, instead of having a check. I think it'll be better and easier for everyone involved. Players will simply be asked to check into a roll-call.

The requirements are the same as ever:

50 point minimum.
1 Thread
1 Open Network
1 Interaction with someone outside your fandom.

If you want to keep track yourself, feel free, but it's not required.

But the one thing I need you guys to do for me is TAGS. I'm going through (as many of you have noticed), and adding tags to things where I see them, but remember - you won't get credit for things that aren't tagged. So PLEASE try to make sure you put your player tag on everything that you post.

I've also noticed there's been a bit of confusion about what constitutes an open or closed network.

An open network is anything that is open to everyone in game, or a significant group of people. This would include networks open to "all magic users" or "all people under the age of 20," for instance. Anything that applies to a group of people NOT LIMITED BY FANDOM counts as an open thread.

A closed thread is anything that is locked to one person, or several people by name, or a thread locked to a certain fandom (ie, "Dresden people").

If a thread is open, but also has a closed filter (for instance, this post) - it will be treated as a closed thread (worth 5 points) to those who respond solely to the filter.

This will be the last month that I will be sending out e-mails the day before the end of the activity check.

The activity check lasts for a week (from the 1st to the 7th) and there will be reminders in game, so I don't think it's too much to expect for that to be enough.

I'm sorry if I'm more like Annie than anyone else right now, but I'm one of the people who has been furloughed from work while this mess is going on. I'm trying to work through the anxiety and depression this has caused and hope to be playing better within the week.

I'm moving this conversation to the main forum so that everyone here can participate in it, and so it doesn't clog the activity check thread.

There has been some talk that the point minimum requirement should be take away from the activity check. As the mod, I am strongly opposed to this, and I'll state my reasons why.

• Activity is crucial in a role-playing game, especially one of this size. All characters and players are important, and the burden of carrying along dead-weights is greater when spread among fewer players and characters.


• Having a point minimum, in my experience, both motivates activity and gives us a way to get rid of those who don't make it. I've seen games where people carry along people who haven't posted in months. The characters these people have are thereby barred from other people who might actually play them. This isn't acceptable to me.


• The fact is, it's not difficult to make activity. There are three requirements - an open network (10 points), a thread (25 points or 35 points), and interaction with someone not in your fandom. There are good reasons for all of these requirements. Assuming the open network includes someone from another fandom, that is a minimum of 35 points right there.

The argument was also made that it is difficult to get activity with all the closed threads. So I went back and looked at September, worried that perhaps there weren't very many open networks that people could reply to. In September (which has been a bad month of activity for everyone), there were 99 open networks, and seventeen open threads, many of which have still not been answered.

There are, of course, reasons that characters can or won't reply to many of the open threads. That's completely understandable. But it takes five to make the activity point minimum, and that's without a thread at all.

I'm also very open to people telling me why they can't make activity checks - as long as you communicate with me, I'm not going to boot you out for not having enough activity. I want people to participate - that's the whole purpose of the activity requirement. And people who go days or weeks without checking in are going to miss out on plots and in the nuts and bolts that keep the game and its overall plot moving forward. I don't want that, which is why I have the requirements I do.

I am, of course, open to hearing what people have to say about the activity requirement. Having been in games which didn't have one, and having suffered because of it, I'm loathe to do away with it (and had actually been considering raising it to 100), but I'm willing to listen and take the views of the players into account.

This has been a really bad month for a lot of people activity-wise (including me), so this month I'm going to waive the activity requirement.

I would like it if you would still fill out the activity check form, so that you can collect what points you earned this month, but there is no minimum requirement. The only way you can be booted from the game this month is if you fail to respond to this at all.
