Thread: BRAVE NEW WORLD BATTLE
Who: The X-Men, the Brotherhood, and NPCs for all sides
When: Early morning Saturday, March 15 and moving into March 16, 2008 -- this battle will last at least two actual days, maybe longer, which will account for any "frozen" time if the thread stalls the rest of the game----this is a battle of such importance that it would make no sense if it only lasted one day.
Where: Washington, D.C.
What: The battle for governmental power in America begins! For the detailed battle plan, please see the OOC post about it. Characters not on the list who choose to show up can show up... whatever :) but the plan is there to keep people's heads from exploding.

____________________

No one could have expected it would be like this.

There were news reports coming in that there were mutants attacking the Brotherhood in other parts of the country. Not everywhere, but key strongholds that no one knew about. They'd been expecting the march on Washington with reinforcements, but they'd never expected all of this. In Washington they were outnumbering the X-Men, sure, but elsewhere? Other bases would fall, no doubt. They just had to hold Washington. Whatever they did, they had to hold Washington.

The siege started just before dawn, with explosions in an empty park-----enough to serve as a distraction while the X-Men and their allies moved in to surround the area as best they could... but after that? After that, it looked like organization died. How could it survive? No one could predict how battles would go, and it seemed like the organized front had now dissolved into individual duels. The Brotherhood killed when they won, but the X-Men seemed to be dragging fallen foes into a forcefield held up by Sue Storm, containing them until... when? Until the battle was over?

No one knew when that would be.

So ... people were idiots. Even more than Cait had expected or given them credit for -- maybe she just brought it out in them? Hard to say. All she knew was that from the moment she'd arrived and started wreaking her particular brand of havoc, complete morons had flocked to her. Obvious mutant, obviously not very nice, obvious target, apparently, for dumb cops, super-hero-wannabes, even a sapien with a stick before the X-People had started herding out the collateral damage.

As though they stood a chance.

Her left hand had been reshaped into a blade almost immediately, and was now stained red. Mercury had lost track of the other Brotherhood members quickly enough, but look around her she had to feel pretty good. If this was all that they were up against? Piece of fucking cake.

Jack ... wasn't even running around and enjoying the slaughter. He had been, of course he had been, but he needed to light another cigarette. It was an inappropriate time to be doing it, but Jack was zapping anyone who got close enough to disturb him. Accord was brimming with energy, static electricity sparking in his hair every couple of seconds. He'd come prepared -- just as prepared as he was to run away at the first sign of his life being in serious danger.

"You'd think," he commented idly to Cait while he tried his damndest to get his lighter to light. Must've been running out of fluid. "That they'd have someone, you know ... powerful hanging around here, you know? Christ. I expected to at least be concerned for my wellbeing by now."

"Seriously." Honestly? The person Cait was most nervous about at the moment was Jack himself, the only one she'd seen with an ability or weapon that could actually hurt her. Electricity made Cait twitchy, especially after what had happened with the Friends of Humanity, but the number of idiots trying to swipe at her provided a decent distraction from that.

"Startin' to wonder how the Hell they held Magneto off for so long, if this's the best of the best of whatever-the-fuck ever. Oh, hey. Here." There was something odd about having a casual chat with an acquaintance, while lashing out at sapien police officers with a sword. Even stranger, reaching into one pocket to pull out the Zippo Cait kept on her whenever she remembered. You never knew when setting things on fire would come in handy - and she tossed it across to Accord before turning back to poundng the living daylights out of any moron who made the mistake of getting too close.

The War Machine flew in from overhead. As the battle raged he noticed that there was an absolute slaughter in an area and very few people seemed equipped to deal with it. He was one of the fortunate few that was extremely well equipped however and because of that he had no need for stealth. He had seen psychological warfare work before, regardless, and this might be as good a time as any. He landed directly in front of the chatty pair.

"Sorry I'm late. I heard you two were looking for someone powerful but I was tied up." The heavily modulated voice of this human tank rang out.

The various armaments from around the War Machine snapped into place, trained on Mercury and Accord. "Should I wait for you two to get ready or do you just want to run now?"

Two days ago? Julius had been in a three-way battle royale over who got to be king - or queen, never forget the queen - of the popcorn cooker. He'd never have admitted it, but life on top just wasn't as thrilling as he'd hoped. People just doing what you told them? Great, if you were giving orders. But for one of the guys in charge of keeping them in line? Boooooring.

Good thing he'd kept in touch with those guys in New York. Sage's email was the brightest piece of news Helio'd had in a week, and looking down now at the chaos unfolding below, he couldn't help but grin. LA had caved easily enough, not too much for him to do. Washington, now. Washington was another story. Fighting everywhere, and a couple of pretty big names down there. It got a bit hard to tell the unaffiliated people apart, so Helio concentrated his effort on the people wearing those dorky X-Men costumes, sending blasts of wind down to knock people off their feet at random, while he floated in the skies above.

In contrast, Sophia was rather liking this whole ruling the country set-up. Granted, it meant that there weren't as many actual fights to be had. But all that meant was that you needed to go out and weed out the sapiens who were causing trouble to pick fights with them. And that it was completely, 100% legal and she didn't have to worry about getting her ass chipped or numbered or anything else ridiculous.

Not that she often worried about it, considering she could render herself invisible to another person's senses... which made her rather sneaky when she wanted to be.

And that was exactly what she was doing now, with blades attached to each wrist: walking around unnoticed and literally stabbing her enemies in the back. It had her splattered in a bit of blood, though she didn't really care. It was almost too easy, though, and when she came to someone she recognized --- from pictures she'd seen of Brotherhood members from other bases --- she made herself visible. At least to him.

Julius didn't recognize the woman who suddenly winked into existence below him, but it didn't take much brainpower to realize who's side she was on; good guys didn't walk around as invisible killers, and the independants all seemed too confused to be any good to anyone. Blasting an area of clear space in front of him - which so happened to include knocking a lamp post through a man with a gun, so much the better - Helio floated low enough to actually exchange words.

"Nice trick," he commented, flashing a grin. "Glad you're on my side." Although, he made sure to stay out of any sort of casual range, just in case that wasn't true.

Avalanche had no problem with chaos. Three years in the Brotherhood did that to a person. It was easy to ignore most of the surrounding battles while focusing on what he did best - complete and utter destruction. The ground rippled from around his feet at intermediate moments, generally causing havoc some distance away. It was a lot like bowling - from the opposite direction. They fell down the same.

He kept his tremors close to the surface, trying to avoid ripping through pipelines and other cables buried beneath the ground. Still, it made enough damage all on it's own. One of the combatants charged at him. His unfortunate opponent did not have the ability of flight, and thus it came as quite a shock to the unfortunate man when the ground seemed to drop beneath him, leaving him to plummet into a pit some 20 feet below. Another ripple had the ground effectively swallowing him up - leaving him trapped there for however long it happened to be. Sucked to be him.

She'd never actually been in a battle this massive. It was...insane to say the least, and her limbs were sore. She'd been ducking and dodging this and that, while attempting to keep her balance on the earth waves Dom was making. It helped when you had a great equilibrium. It was just a matter of keeping your balance and finding some good footing, and not placing too much wait on your steps. Just... a lot of hopping...and jabbing. Nails helping her to inject her opponents, along with the shooting spit of green and clouds from her hand.

She'd had a lot of practice with the current FOH sweeps. It was good to know it all came in handy in the end. Other than Cait who was with her `mentor` Jack, Dom was the only person she felt she was cohesive with when working out in the field. They just seemed to have a certain type of sync that worked out. Great dance partner, if you will. She wasn't anywhere near him at the moment, but she could see him out of the corner of her eye, and that was close enough for her.

Daisy had had it with babysitting Tony Stark. He was stupid enough to get fucked up by Magneto, and suddenly it was her job to look after him? So Iron Man was a big deal. Good for him. Didn't mean it was her responsibility, but Daisy took the job without complaining, constantly paranoid that Fury would realize he'd made a mistake in promoting her so high and knock her down at the first sign of childish weakness.

Needless to say, she was relieved when she'd found out she was bound for Washington -- with Captain America, no less. So while Avalanche was making the earth shake, forcing Daisy to pay some attention to keeping her ground, she approached from the back. Hands, covered by gauntlets to help control her powers, raised before a pulse spread from them, sweeping toward Scorpion and Avalanche and strong enough to knock them into the air.

Vertigo didn't really go out looking for Remy Lebeau. In fact, she was shocked to find him here, and wasn't entirely sure as to what on earth he was doing here. She herself was there on a favor to Sage and an incredible need to kick someone's ass----and there was evidence of her presence all over the place with fall, bloody bodies and ... numerous pools of vomit. She walked across the grass, people swaying and falling down in her wake because they couldn't keep balance. After losing her hand and after what happened with Carol Danvers, she couldn't stand getting her ass kicked... which meant she wasn't giving people a chance to fight her, making them crash into posts and trees and other people as they tried to run toward her----and then shooting them.

But Remy... Remy was there, and she just couldn't stay away, stalking toward him in black leather pants, combat boots, and a white and acid green leather vest that was her signature piece. She had to look smokin' hot on the battlefield. She liked it when the last thing a man saw was her tight, leather-clad body before she shot him in the face.

"Well, look who it is," she said when she was just a foot behind him. "Thought you didn't like to come to parties."

Remy was busy at the moment. He'd been playing around with one of the minions brought in for the battle, enjoying the game of it rather than really defeating his opponent. It wasn't often he had the chance to fight with this much enthusiasm or against an actual opponent. He was dressed for battle, wearing the black armor of the Guild, complete with the subtle maroon horizontal stripes down both sides. The rest of the ensemble was black as well, reinforced leather that gave him some protection in a fight, apart from the faded, brown leather trench covering it.

The voice had him turning but confirmation wasn't necessary. Hers was a voice he wasn't likely to forget.

"Now that depends entirely on what kinda party we're talkin' about." He answered glibly, cracking his opponent across the head with his staff. The fellow went down quickly enough, now that Remy was done playing with him. It was interesting, how mutants relied upon their powers exclusively to get by. "Y'know I never turn down a good time."

To be honest, Remy couldn't have really explained what he was doing there. He wasn't an X-Man. In an entire life based on non-action, Remy was fairly convinced that this wasn't his fight. And yet with a few words, Xavier had convinced him otherwise. The man was damn persuasive, Remy had to give him credit for that.

It wasn't the first time he'd seen Vertigo since he'd taken her hand, but still not entirely a welcomed visit either.

"Shoulda known it'd attract all t'wrong crowd." He looked her over and shook his head. He sounded amused, but there was a hint of weariness in his voice when addressing her. There was little question as to what side of this fight she'd take. "What do y'want, Vee?"

"What I want is lasers on my robotic hand," said Vertigo, frowning. She was sporting a semi-automatic in either hand, but that wasn't good enough. She wanted lasers. She had a toolbelt around her hips with other firearms and sharp, dangerous objects, but ... she wasn't gonna get lasers. "So I'll settle for this."

And she lifted her leg like a dancer and kicked him in the face.

Rogue, Iceman, etc.

Rogue had gotten separated from John not too far into the battle --- which she didn’t like. More because she was convinced that he was going to be reckless and stupid and end up dead than because she felt like she needed to be protected. Although, with bullets flying, weapons out, and chaos everywhere, not to mention the fact that, except for the X-Men in their signature uniforms, it was difficult to tell who was on whose side, maybe she should have been more concerned that she was going to get killed herself.

She didn’t much like the way this battle was going, didn’t even want to be here, fighting like this. But it wasn’t like she had a choice in the matter and she’d already been forced to use her powers, which meant that she had enough strength to pick up a car and, she was pretty sure, some measure of flight… that she wasn’t in any hurry to test out, just in case it the power faded while she was using it. But it seemed like a good idea to use those things until she absolutely had to default back to her absorption power. At least in an effort to keep herself from chancing anymore insanity.

With all the people fighting, Rogue didn’t actually see anyone she knew until Bobby. And that wasn’t good. She could deal with fighting nameless, faceless people. But Bobby? Especially after what had happened? That she didn’t want to do.

He knew it was necessary. Even if some of what had happened made sense, the others parts didn't. It had given mutants a sense of freedom, but had caused even more problems in the end. Seeing it come to an end was something he was looking forward to. Sure he had been nervous and worried whether or not they would all make it back, but that, unfortunately, was part of the super hero business. You always took those risks.

Bobby had made his way through a few individuals, though had managed to not cause a great deal of damage and managed to keep himself from getting injured. His ice form always helped with that a great deal and he found himself leaning on it more than he probably should.

The ice form melting away, he came to a sudden halt as he turned only to come face to face with Rogue. This wasn't good. Not at all. He didn't want to fight Rogue and, if he could, he'd get out of it as quickly as possible. But, until that time...

"Rogue..."

Shit. Her hands were uncovered, from using her powers, gloves stuffed into the pockets of her long, black trench, but her bare hands flexed automatically, as though the instinct was to fight. Although, the truth was that her first instinct was to flee. Because what was she supposed to do? Try to beat the crap out of Bobby?

Maybe if she'd still be crazy. Or if they hadn't just gotten through two weeks of kidnapping and torture together. Maybe, in either of those situations, she would have been able to stomach it. But not now. And when she opened her mouth to speak her voice came out hoarse. 'Are you planning to drag me off to lock me up, Bobby?"

She might as well know what Bobby was planning on doing.

Threnody, Spider-Man, etc.
[info]deathbecomesher
2008-03-15 11:33 pm UTC (link)
Threnody loved this. With all the dead and dying people on the battlefield, she had enough energy to feel like an overfed tick, just bubbling over from the strength and last gasps of dozens of people. Thank God she was able to block out the voices of the dead, or else she would have been overwhelmed to the point of being practically comatose, and, therefore, completely useless. One of these days, she was going to have to figure out how that particular gift of control had been given to her.

But, for now, she was happy to stalk through the battle, flanked by a trio of zombies who did most of her dirty work, ripping apart military men and taking bullets for her with their super strength and endurance. And, just to prove that she didn’t need her zombies to do all the work for her, she’d taken out a few sapiens on her own with blasts of concussive energy.

This was more like it. This was part of the reason why she’d gone searching for the Brotherhood: to be able to actually do something to help destroy the people oppressing mutants. And, after months of basically sitting on her hands, it was nice to actually be out doing that. As bloody and gruesome as it was. But it wasn’t like Melody wasn’t used to bloody and gruesome.

Okay, so the zombies? Gross. Really gross, actually. Maybe Peter just had an issue with dead people wandering around and ripping people apart. It just wasn't kosher, but at least they were dead already, so he couldn't feel too bad about webbing two of them and smashing their heads together. Without their protection, he hoped that Threnody would be relatively defenseless.

Except for those nasty concussive blasts, but he could deal with those, really.

Grimacing under his mask, Spider-Man commented, "They weren't kidding when they said never to fight zombies on a full stomach."

Postman, Anaconda, etc

To say that Postman didn't want to be in this situation would have been an understatement. A believer in peace whenever possible, he would have preferred to be doing almost anything other than waging war on a combination of Brotherhood members and ... other people who seemed to for whatever reason be out to get him. There was no way to avoid using his power, making the situation even more uncomfortable; the only blessing was that he'd thus far been able to get away with half measures, even convincing one lizard-man to walk voluntarily into Susan Storm's forcefield in search of answers.

He didn't think it would keep being that easy, though. Not when violence was rising, and the less cerebral fighters were getting caught up in bloodlust and battle fury. As far as combat went he was just a man, and one man, however good shape he was in, had rapidly declining odds in a battle of lazer beams and earthquakes.

She'd been called to the site specifically by Sage. She wasn't against fighting completely. In fact, she'd basically constructed herself to be an awesome fighting machine, or at least to hold her own in a good fight.

She'd been wiping the floor with a few people, massive arms wrapping around the bodies, constricting. She crushed them. She could feel their bones snap and crack beneath the pressure she placed as those elongated limbs squeezed tighter and tighter until they either died or passed out. She was attacking just about anyone she didn't see as familiar. It was easy when they were all so...uniform. Seriously. The X-suits? It was like putting a bullseye on your back, chest, face. It didn't matter.

And who didn't no the Avengers or the Fantastic Four or any of the other big name heroes who decided to show up. She didn't know the man she was approaching, as the bodies dropped out of her grasp. All she did was swing a hand towards him, arm starting to curve like a noodle preparing to ensnare him.

David had been keeping an eye on this one, the large woman whose arms apparently acted somehow like pythons, or ... something. He'd avoided her, kept out of her sight and her reach because quite frankly, she scared him. Physical mutations were miles away from his abilities, and the crushed body of a man she'd just dropped didn't seem so very different from David, in the end.

But, it wasn't like he had any options. Dropping quickly to the ground, the Postman rolled out of her reach. In as much as he knew her reach, which seemed to be unusually great. Spinning where he stood, he aimed a kick at her wrist. This would be interesting.

Susan's job seemed easy, compared to everyone else's. Stand near the Washington Monument, make a forcefield, keep it up. Simple, and without people bashing against her forcefield, it was easy, but sticking to the objective meant watching everyone else fight.

It would be a lie to say that she wasn't concerned about Johnny. He was strong, but truth be told ... he was kind of stupid and would probably manage to find the worse possible enemy to fight. But she stayed, for now, using one wall of the monument as part of her forcefield, opening holes in it whenever someone approached with a villain to toss in.

Mystique, Wolverine, etc.

Mystique had never honestly expected Charles to hold back on Scott's account. Of course not. The moral blow had been the intention, but what with Havok coming in and ruining it (he'd gotten lucky, he really had), that angle was lost.

It didn't matter much. They could still win. Nothing had ever been dependent on Cyclops' demise, and it was all as well.

Shifting into a bloody, apparently injured Rogue, Mystique positioned herself in an alley near Wolverine -- far from Rogue's actual confrontation with Iceman. Out of sight, out of mind and all that.

"Logan." With the smells of battle around them, he'd have to get close to tell the difference. With everyone's blood and sweat mixing together, the smell was foul, even without super senses.

Logan didn't stay in one place all that long to keep from killing the people that he fought. He was trying to follow Xavier's directives not to kill, and he'd thrown several mutants into Susan's force field with bloody, gaping wounds. There were a couple of people who hadn't been able to escape a fatal blow from his claws----once a killer, always a killer. Logan couldn't avoid what Weapon X had done to him.

However, Weapon X couldn't take away Logan's compassion, couldn't take away all of his humanity, no matter how many animal instincts he had. And at the sound of that voice, he turned sharply. Rogue. He could have turned and walked away, leaving Rogue with her mistakes, but he couldn't. He just couldn't. Logan stalked toward her at a heavy jog. She looked terrible. The least he could do was let her touch him, let her take his powers for a moment and heal.

"Don't tell me you got yourself mixed up in all this, kiddo."

"John's here," she said. Where John was, Rogue tended to be, if only to keep an eye on him. Mystique stumbled toward him, taking the affected limp of a person with a broken ankle and leaning on the edge of the wall to keep herself steady. "This is all so stupid." In the light, she looked even worse; Mystique had obviously put some effort into this, getting blood all over. Real blood, though it probably wasn't hers at all. Still, when illusions were the essence of her power? Damn right she took pride in a good imitation.
