She'd given him as much time and space as she could stand, and that afternoon, she'd had enough. He'd been stewing, alone, since the end of Dick's reign of terror, since all the leviathans had died, since all the zombie witches around were destroyed. But he still hadn't come back to the prison and enough was enough. She knew what part of the problem was, of course. That little girl who'd died. Who hadn't been that much older than Sophia. She knew how much it upset him, because it had upset her even though she'd barely known the girl. There was probably more, too. More that she was missing, why he was staying gone. But obviously if he was going to come back, she was going to have to go out there and actually bring him back.
Carol checked her gun, made sure it was full of bullets, slid it into her belt. She made sure her knife was sharp, the way she'd been taught, and slid it into her boot. The leviathans and other mutants were gone, but there were regular walkers still out there and they were still as dangerous as they'd ever been.
She didn't bother checking in with anyone at the prison before heading out the gate. She'd been keeping to herself for awhile now. It wasn't that she wanted to be alone, but it was easier than bonding with people and then losing them. Unfortunately for Daryl, that connection had been formed long ago and it was one she wasn't so willing to sever. No matter how much he was going to hate it, or how much he pushed her away. And she had no doubt he'd try.
But as she made her way into the woods, she felt eerily calm and focused. He'd come back with her. She really believed that.
