Who: Kaitlyn and Gabriel
What: Flashback to the start of infection
Where: Canada to start
When: Start of infection // end of Dark Visions
Warnings: zombies
Kaitlyn was tired. It had been a long drive from California up to Canada where they could retreat to the Fellowship's new island. Kait had only agreed to go along if the stupid old rule about nobody being allowed inside who had killed a person was removed. Gabriel had killed by accident and in self defense and ostracizing him for it had never done anything except for make him shut himself off from the group. She knew he still had a hard time, dealing with the five of them in his mind but in the afterglow of defeating Mr. Zetes she hadn't felt him throw up any of those tall icy walls of his. There would be no point in hiding himself from Kaitlyn, she had already seen it all but the others hadn't.
It had been Gabriel's idea that they take a break from everything that was going on. There was nothing but constant work as Joyce set up her research and Tamsin tried her best to help keep Renny and Bri in line and help them rehabilitate from their exposure to the crystal as well. Rob was busy trying to heal and Anna was communing with nature. Kait wasn't really sure what Lewis was up to other than mooning over Lydia who had put herself to work. She didn't have any psychic power but she could cook and that was a marketable skill in a world that had previously been filled to the brim with bred and peanut butter.
Kaitlyn had needed the break too. Everything still felt so surreal. Just a few short days ago she had been a part of Project Black Lightning, a psychic strike team that included Gabriel, Bri, Renny and a couple of other psycho psychics. Save for Kaitlyn, they had all been exposed too much to the crystal that had driven them crazy and turned them into psychic vampires. Luckily busting the crystal had cured that too although she still looked forward to it when she and Gabriel freely exchanged energy. When his lips met her neck where her spine connected to it and opened that transfer point. It was exhilarating.
They had borrowed Lydia's car and were driving down a country road. Lydia didn't have a cd player in her car so Kaitlyn shuffled around on stations. Oddly, there seemed to be nothing on. Nothing but static and then a news report finally came on.
Attention. Residents are instructed to stay inside of their houses. Do not approach them. Whatever you do. Do not approach the dead.
She turned smoky blue eyes on Gabriel as he looked at her and then back at the road.
"That has to be a joke, right?"
Of course it was a joke. Don't approach the dead? That made no sense. Who would approach the dead? With a shiver she flashed back to Parte King and Sasha laying on the floor by the crystal.
"Tomorrow I want to go to one of the art shops in town," she said. "Pick up some more art supplies." Since they had already gotten hold of their scholarship money from Mr. Zetes she and Gabriel had decided to splurge on this mini getaway and Kait planned to use at least some of that money for art supplies.
