She easily let him pull her long, feeling numb to everything that was happening around them. The hospital had literally been something out of a nightmare and Kaitlyn had seen some nightmarish things lately. It wasn't the same as this. This was so much worse. They couldn't even get back to their friends.
Rob? She searched out as far as she could. Anna? Lewis? There was nothing, no response, not anything. She still felt numb as she sat back in the passenger seat of Lydia's car and Gabriel got behind the wheel. He steered them away from the water and there were others. Those things that weren't really like people. Those things like the crystal mutants. They were dead behind their eyes. She saw them on the side of the road as Gabriel drove.
"Can I have your coat?" Kaitlyn asked quietly. She had brought her own but it was thin and she had been shivering, especially now that she could feel her cold wet pant legs from standing on the shore. He shrugged out of his coat automatically and handed it to her.
She wrapped the leather around herself and held it close to her for a moment, trying to take comfort in it. It smelled like Gabriel. She reached into his pocket and felt something cold and familiar against her palm. It was a knife. She pulled it out of his pocket and flipped the blade open before she dragged the pointy end of it hard against her arm.
She had tried to keep it in but a little cry of pain escaped her lips. ROB?! ANNA? LEWIS? Are you there?
Gabriel had used pain to keep in contact with her. Now she was going to do the same thing for her friends.
