Gabriel kept his distance, letting Kaitlyn handle what she wanted. He didn't want this. This was the last thing he wanted. He wanted to make sure he and Kaitlyn were alright. Not everyone they passed on the side of the road and he felt as though Kaitlyn was going to regret this. His eyes trailed from the father, to the mother that was quiet and then to the children, one with tears in his eyes and the older girl, stoic as she stood next to her mother.
He turned his head when he heard Kaitlyn, her thoughts and then the gasp that slipped through her lips. Kaitlyn... he warned, his mouth shut, but his eyes on her, giving her a glimpse to go with his warning. He closed the distance between himself and the redhead, pulling her back toward him, not forcefully, but enough to make an impact.
The thing in the shop. It's teeth, he thought and bent down, looking through the window of the station wagon and was up instantly. He killed the last one. We have to go. He pulled Kaitlyn back toward the car, but she fought him. He let go of her and kept her in place against the car.
"What if they turn into what that thing is?" He whispered and she glared daggers at him. Must be the children. He bit his lower lip in frustration and moved away from her, remembering the gun that was in the car.
But instead, his expression softened slightly.
"Get them in the -"
"JOSEPH!" Turning around, Gabriel saw the little kid on the other side of the station wagon and the father was trying to stop him, trying to talk him from getting any closer to the opened door where their grandfather was. He slugged his way out, his teeth baring, his arms swiping at the small kid. The mother was crying and Gabriel cursed under his breath as he grabbed the little kid Joseph. Kaitlyn, get the gun. He dodged the thing while warning others to stay back.
