Who: Clint, open to anyone in the vampire infested area
What: Clint's brooding again.
Where: In Everett the vampire town.
When: Evening time!
Status: Complete/Open
Rating: TBD

It had been over two decades since he had lost everything that had mattered to him. When the vampires had decided to overrun and take over Everett Clint had done all he could to ensure that they failed. First by sniping them from a distance. High velocity moving bullets were very effective in making heads explode. When he had run out of ammunition for his Tac-50 he had gone in close quarters with his specialised arrows to help his partner. But when their position had been overrun he had forced her out. A task made easier by the mortal wound in his side. He had been ready to pull the pin on the thermite grenade and blow the room and building sky high but he'd been over taken before it could happen.

Then she had come along and changed him, forcing him to become a vampire. He had been ready to give up and die in the sun when he realized he could better help the survivors. So he played along with her plan, waiting for a chance to contact Natasha. But then the prison fell and there wasn't a trace of Natasha among the survivors. It had crushed him and it became an effort to keep his humanity on. He knew he could flip it off but he needed to feel the pain. To remind himself he wasn't a monster. Even if he was one.

Currently, the archer turned vampire sat at one of his favorite perches, one of the higher buildings, his feet over the side. He had a gun strapped to his left leg and his combat knife on his right. A bottle of Jewel of Russia Classic vodka was in his hand and half emptied already, the cap sitting nearby and fresh wax crumbs indicating it had just been opened. He lifted the bottle to his lips and took another long drink, staring off into the distance. Why he hadn't left Everett yet he didn't know. Perhaps because he didn't know where else to go or who would want him.

Clint could tell the girl was speaking truth about knowing Klaus and Rebekah but something in her body language said it was not a pleasant aquaintence. Lifting the bottle to his lips again, he took another long drink before swallowing, staring at her.

"Best way to sell a lie is to believe the lie you're telling is the truth," he finally said. That had been something Natasha had taught him. He didn't bother to hide the emotions in his eyes of pain and sorrow. It was clear from her scent this girl was a vampire and she opposed Rebekah and what's-his-face ruling Everett. Clint had no intention of alerting the others. Besides, it was his day off.

"I use to be a spy and master assassin. And your fibbing needs work kid." He went to turn so he could sit back down and finish his vodka. I could probably outdrink Tasha now... he thought. A single tear slipped past his guard as his mind drifted to his late partner and lover.

Her blood ran cold. Elena just stared him for a moment unsure of what to do or how to respond being so blatantly called out on her terrible lying skills. She really needed to work on those if she wanted to continue risking her neck for the people that were being treated like cattle at those farms. It wasn't the first time she'd freed people and she doubted it would be the last time.

She chewed on the inside of her mouth and nodded at the other vampire. "I'll keep that in mind," she said. He'd called her kid so maybe he did recognize her. Elena was still relatively young for a vampire even if she was technically forty three years old. One of the perks of being a vampire was looking eighteen years old forever.

She shifted awkwardly as she looked up at him. She could tell he had been drinking but it took a lot of alcohol to get a vampire drunk. "Are you going to take me in?" she asked him. She was prepared for a fight but she was hoping to avoid one.

It was driving Clint nuts a bit to not remember the girl but he knew he had seen her around Everett before the vampire fiasco. Or hell, maybe he was just finally losing his mind. He didn't care though. "Good. Enough innocent blood gets shed here already," he said. While he did feed on the humans in the farms, it was never enough to kill and he did his best to be gentle about it. A rare thing it seemed in the town but he would be imprisoned or killed if he didn't play along and keep up appearances.

Finishing the vodka, he let the bottle fall to the ground and watched it shatter. "It's my day off," he said in reply to her question. "I'd rather wallow in my humanity than take in someone doing the right thing."

Of all the things she was expecting to hear, it's my day off wasn't one of them. Did anyone who worked for Rebekah and Klaus truly have a day off? Elena didn't think so but she had to admit not knowing much of the complicated intricacies that Klaus and Rebekah oversaw. She just knew that she didn't want to be part of it and even if she did, Klaus and Rebekah hated her.

"Wallow in your humanity?" she asked him curiously. She could almost hear Damon's voice in her head asking her if she was stupid and urging her to run while she still had the chance. This guy obviously wasn't interested in turning her in. But the longer she stuck around, the more dangerous the situation could become. Yet she didn't want to just leave him here.

"You're not happy.....doing what you do?" she asked, trying to be diplomatic about it. It was hard to be diplomatic about murder and kidnapping though.

The archer knew not everyone would understand his reasonings of staying with Klaus and Rebekah. He wasn't sure he did half the time. In spite of that though, by his staying to help out, it meant he could try and ease the suffering of some people. Emphasis on try.

Hearing the questions posed to him, he glanced at her. "Feeling helps remind me of who I was before Rebekah forced me to turn," he said. "It's all I really have," he added quietly. He ran a hand through his short hair and glanced at her. "What sane person would be happy about keeping innocent people locked up as food and torturing them?" he countered.

She had to give him that. But that was the problem with Rebekah and Klaus, they weren't sane. Some vampires were just plain evil and crazy from beginning to end but the line that Elena came from could choose to keep their humanity turned on. It was just that most didn't want to and Elena couldn't even blame them for that. This world was a terrible place. It must be so easy not to feel anything.

Elena could never bring herself to turn off her humanity, had never even tried. She didn't go anywhere near that "switch" for fear that once she flipped it she would never be able to flip it back. Elena never wanted to lose her humanity. She never wanted to be a vampire in the first place, and this guy sounded like he had never wanted to be one either.

"I'm sorry that she did that to you. She forced me to turn too," Elena said. And it was true... in a way. Rebekah had forced her to die. She just hadn't expected Damon's blood to be in her system when she did it. Elena hadn't been expecting that either but she didn't blame Dr. Fell and she didn't blame Damon. The only person she blamed was Rebekah. But even Elena knew that humans didn't last very long in this world.

"Why do you stay here then? Why work for them if you're unhappy?"

She knew she was pushing her luck with every second she stayed on this rooftop but she couldn't just leave him alone up here like this.

Even though Clint viewed himself as a true monster now, had done horrible and terrible things, he couldn't let himself turn his humanity off. If he did that, then he would lose the pain from the loss of Natasha. The pain that reminded him of love and perhaps oddly kept him sane.

That was a good question. Why did he stay? He knew the inner workings of Rebekah's empire in Everett now. He knew the routines, codes, and other sensitive information. He could leave now and help the resistance. Yet he stayed. And he knew why.

"I'd be unhappy anywhere," he returned. "At least by my staying, I can help humanity when I'm able."

She nodded at him. "You helped humanity today," she said. She had no idea if the other vampire was aware of the people she had just sent racing for the woods. The only reason she had approached him was to distract him long enough for them to escape. She hadn't expected to make a friend. If that was even what this was.

"I'm Elena," she said, tentatively taking a few steps closer to him. "I live in one of the rebel camps not far from here. If there was ever some other way you wanted to help.... we wouldn't turn you away." She knew she was playing with fire. She had no reason to trust this other vampire but there was something about him that seemed so genuine to her.

Clint shrugged some. "Hooray for me," he said quietly. Hearing her name, Clint looked at her. He knew the name. Had heard Rebekah and some others mention it a few times. When she offered about helping the rebels he looked down and shook his head. "The people I get close to usually end up dead Elena." Sorrow filled his eyes as his hand drifted to the dog tag under his shirt. He had never found the other one he had given Natasha in the rubble of the prison where she was still probably rotting.

Forcing his thoughts away from his late partner, he looked back at the other vampire. "Clint," he said.

"I know what that's like," she said sympathetically. In Elena's lifetime she had lost a lot of people, including her parents both biological and adoptive. She had lost Damon and Alaric and her aunt Jenna. She had lost more people than she cared to talk about and she knew how that could eat a person up inside, how it could leave a hole that could never be filled. No wonder Clint was wallowing.

It was even worse as a vampire, they were destined to outlive everyone they cared about. That was what made that switch, the one you could flip to feel nothing so very tempting.

"It's nice to meet you, Clint. If you ever need anything... "

She had already put out the invitation for him to join their camp so the ball was in his court now. She knew the prudent thing to do would be to leave. She just hated leaving him in such a state.

Clint turned and looked at Elena. "I have no doubt you do," he said. He ran a hand through his hair and studied her. He wondered how many people she had lost. "What I need you can't give. No offense Elena," he said. Rising to his feet, the archer brushed some dirt off of his clothes.

"You should depart now before you're discovered. I've heard Rebekah mention you by name and you are not well liked here." He lifted his eyes and met hers. "I've no desire to see Rebekah torture more who do not deserve it if I can help it." His eyes shifted towards the forest then back to her. "Whatever business you had today here, I hope it was fruitful. And that the next time we meet, I'm on another day off."

She nodded at him, understanding his meaning. Just because he was on a day off today didn't mean he would always be so kind. He was employed by Rebekah after all who Elena was sure, would love to slowly torture her to death just for fun. And she didn't think Clint would stop her. Who would?

"Thank you," she said. Because she knew he was putting himself in danger just turning a blind eye to her today even if it was his day off. She hoped she hadn't said too much about the rebel camp she lived in. She wasn't sure what to make of Clint.

She looked down and then jumped. The fall would have killed a human but Elena landed neatly on her feet before taking off at full speed towards the woods where the humans she had rescued had dispersed.
